Read an article today that quoted that there is no US and/or NATO plan to become involved other than politically, that Ukraine is not worth a fight in Russia's back yard. Wish I could find it now, can't even remember the position of the person making the comment - basically claimed the NATO is "monitoring" and that's as far as it will go. They want Ukraine to side with the West but are claiming they won't fight for it if Russia does move troops in... and stated it would not be fair to lead the people of Ukraine to believe otherwise.

The first casualty of war...is truth, eh? This war started cold in December, if not sooner. That's when McCain made his little stand and figuratively spat in Putin's eye, as being just as good a date as any to use.

Frankly (and I hate to say this) I flat do not believe or trust what US Officials say anymore. Not even the top principles in open public press conferences. They've told provable lies too many times now and played 'secret deals' to poor end results, too often to forget.

I believe Putin only marginally further because he simply doesn't seem to care what people think (NOT a good thing in that job position) and just does what he says. If he doesn't want people to know, he does it without saying it...but he's not one to have a need for camera time every 24hr news cycle (like some leaders we know) and just make stuff up because it sounds good and it can be denied later.

I think all is good if all stays quiet....but I also wouldn't count on that. McCain loves covert dirty tricks and funny business by the history of where his hands have been. If response comes, it'll come with smiles and handshakes above the table with an effort to boot Putin where it hurts, under the table. It's just a bad, ignorant bunch we have in power right now. Horrible timing for this show-down.

WHO the HELL does Obama and his Black House think they are to tell Russia how they can or cannot rule their own people in their own country?

That's like if we had a civil war ( say north and south for instance Obama for the North), Russia would step in and say Nope Obama, you cannot step in and war with those folks in the South !

You think Obama would stand for this.. I think not.. thats once again how STUPID Obama is. We have no right to interfere at all even if millions of Russians on both sides are killed. No right at all !

Um, Ukraine is a sovereign nation and not a state of Russia. Putin has no right to dictate their politics as we do. R

You raise an interesting point. With huge oil development in Norway, Massive natural gas surpluses in the U.S., Putin's leverage over western Europe looks to be limited, time-wise.

This may force Putin's hand and hence the "warning" from Washington...cough. cough.

Lets see Poland and the other ex-empire members stand with the Ukes. Show your solidarity and concerns of Russian expansionism and back the Ukraine up with troop and material support.

If they don't, why the heck should the U.S.??
This is the creeping threat of war. Poland certainly would stand up to Russia to protect the Ukes. Those guys can't get out of the way of their own balls. The polish people have shown their gumption again and again.
First Poland then Czechoslovakia, then then because they are close by a United Germany. Before you know it the UK is in the mix because ...well where do you think we got it from.... more than unrest in the middle east where many seem to think the big 3 will start I think it will once again be a European theater. If (and you know they will) Turkey gets involved it may drag the middle east and the Arab nations into the mess.

And that would be the truth as these things go but we know from history the US policy of charging in like the beloved Calvary in the last scene, saving the day and restoring peace. Plus there's the reconstruction money to look forward to too.

No your wrong. It's like if Mexico had a civil war and usa wanted to go in and break it up. And Putin said no Mr Obama get your grubby fingers off of mexico. You are mighty ignorant if you think Ukraine is part of Russia. And I won't even touch your racist comment because you already got flamed.

Thank you for dropping some knowledge on that guy!

I don't understand how Russia invading the Ukraine isn't seen as an act of war. It would be like the US moving troops into Canada and taking over some of their airports.

I'm afraid it won't much matter here for who it belonged to, although that piece of land has changed many hands, many times to be fair. So has Russia for that matter.. Germans, French, Mongols, Vikings, and many more have called modern day parts of Russia their humble abode, as much as Russia has called Ukraine theirs.

It's my belief that Russia hasn't had the ability to project absolute power to absolute outcomes until fairly recently following 1989/90, and then stayed very low-key with their new found confidence. It's well earned as people like Zaphod have pointed out in reviewing some of their new Missiles and defense systems.

This IS the first line and the "other side". When the US Military goes begging for money, this is precisely who all that is about for the whiz bang super systems which cost so much, we can't even risk losing them in the combat they were made for.

Russia can end this with Ukraine as surely as the US could end a problem in Puerto Rico or any other Caribbean nation for comparison of distances and logistics chains short enough to Fed-ex supplies to and out perform the Pentagon for delivery.

It appears Russia is through playing possum though, however this turns out. The world now gets interesting again.

Let's hope Obama appreciates this is a marathon and not a sprint for TV cameras. It'll likely be a long one, too.

Mcain the great pretender!! America gains nothing getting involved... Russia is going to do what they want, and the paper tigers in the whitehouse and mcain should of kept their mouths shut! Russia is not going to let it's navel base to be in jeopardy.. WE shouldn't loose one life over this... Russia should back the hell out, let the people in the ukraine settle it... Like Russia said about syria let them fight it out... Why not let the ukranians do the same??? Well thats not in their interest

If your looking for Obama to start anything you will be waiting awhile, he is an empty suit, now the generals, that might be another thing.

You can bet Putin will push this to the max because he knows Obama will just run his mouth like always with his lines and BS.

Bottom line...if Putin wants the Ukraine he will get the Ukraine.......of course that is unless the elite's are ready for cleansing then we will be at war... a real war.

Just within the last half hour or so, the Associated Press (AP) reported this:

AP - Obama warns Russia of 'costs' in Ukraine

I was going to quote the article, but there are stern AP copyright notices about that, so I'll just link to it.

Sounded like a threat to me, though he apparently didn't say what will be done and I doubt there really is anything he could do (or should do) under the circumstances. And I won't comment on the irony of such a warning either.

But to me it's way too reminiscent of events leading up to WWII, the cold war, etc.
