I'm going to sound like a total nutter, and it's probably more appropriate for the Alternative Methods thread, but I had a gnawing need to check the EQ lists 15 minutes ago or so (I was busy with the kids, so I couldn't) Man, my blood ran cold seeing this listed. This is scary shallow, scary.

Looks like there are some swells rolling in now, but I am unfamiliar with this area.

I would be driving my boat way out as fast as I could go......

It's fascinating how these large quakes can be recorded thousands of kilometers away - 11,660 km to be precise!

This is the seismic station closest to my house - GS.OK029. That big earthquake has already registered on this seismograph. It was just installed not more than a couple of months ago, so maybe it has great sensitivity.

You might also notice these short-duration spikes - we usually feel those. They frequently don't show up as an earthquake anywhere, though they sure feel like earthquakes to me!

Equador is now where near The Solomons .......... whats the deal?

Amazing what a magnitude difference of 0.6 makes for the Tsunami warning,
at 8.3 we were alerted on the radio on the 9am News

@ 7.6 na, don't worry.
looks like just the Solomons, Vanuatu and PNG will get something
ptwc.weather.gov...

poor Solomonians, first those floods, now a couple of M7 earthquakes to deal with
I use PMG (Port Moresby, PNG) station for this part of the Pacific, it is quite sensitive
this is the graph just now set at the same settings as these earlier ones which are showing 4s and 5's

I just got around to googling that location, it's apparently in the Galapagos. Still a huge distance away, I assumed this was some small port nearby the Solomons. Bob, unless you have good reason to include it, this is very misleading for people.

I'm relieved it's been downgraded, but a 7.6 is still a pretty big quake. And considering the region, it could be all there is, or a foreshock like the Santa Cruz sequence was. Hopefully there's nothing more, the islanders over there have dealt with enough recently.

942.2 km between the 7.6 now and the 7.1 on 11/04, there is the potential of a M8 along that distance for sure

5.0 aftershock earthquake.usgs.gov...

geofon are reporting a 6.1mb 10 minutes after their 7.5 geofon.gfz-potsdam.de...

not sure who to believe, up till now USGS were being USEFULL for a change and had better coverage (more aftershocks of the 7.1 than the rest) but are now lagging behind

Maybe this is a dumb question...but why are so many of recent quakes immediately downgraded from the original assessment. Is this normal or a new trend?

I didn't realize how slowly we got the News, it was 3/4hr before announced on our local radio.
Plenty of time if it had been a 8.3 or bigger, but still that is pretty poor response time, something like that should be breaking news worth interrupting the music for.
Maybe I should get that damned smart phone after all and an eq app.
If that had been at the Kermadecs .............

I think the networks are depending too much on automatic readings from their instrument for the first postings, the settings must be too high or something.

This is how EMSC got their 7.8Mw
