Slightly off topic, but I don't think the amount of stone required would have come from anywhere but a quarry, with the Ancient worlds propensity towards slave labour and the already existing mining community within Britain even before the Romans arrived - Britain was famous for it's tin, for example, well before the Romans arrived - contrary to popular belief, the "barbarians" across Europe that the Roman's conquered were not savages but well versed in the arts of masonry and metal working with rather advanced cultures, in some regards exceeding that of the Romans, which is often what attracted the Roman's in the first place.

That said, most dwellings would have been made of wood for the most part and only the grandest buildings would have been made of significant amounts of stone.

I take it you meant Dic Sion Dafydd but I have not abandoned my language you cheeky monkey. I was never blessed with it in the first place being brought up by Angles in the land of the Angles and Saxons. So yes it will be in English, sorry.

Chemtrails/Contrails: Yes that actually was the reason it took the picture.

I was raised in the UK with my grandfather -- Leeds to be specific.
I'm now residing in the U.S and planning on moving back once I receive my masters degree.
From what I see there seems to be a lot of us here

Hello Jane, there's a topic I'd like to see discussed if a sub-forum comes into being, and it's a specific example of a general phenomenon.

In the North-West of England, local councils have often found it sensible to fix streetlights to electricity poles. It saves erecting extra poles which is a good deal all round. Now that we have sold off our electricity infrastructure, these electricity poles are owned by, and therefore are the responsibility of, an Australian conglomerate, and an American Bank.
Someone has recently pointed out to our American cousins, that should one of the local council's streetlights get blown off said pole, and trash the greenhouse at number three, LITIGATION could possibly ensue.

(Imagine a prairie with a wagon train rapidly forming a circle to the accompaniment of fast banjo music).

I believe our local councils will face little choice here, and personally find the idea of less light rather attractive, (preferring to see the stars) the thing I find objectionable is that selling off our infrastructure is obviously not always in our best interests long-term.

mistersmith.

PS. We need another section for talking about the weather. Obviously.

Id also like to discuss really stupid expensive ideas, that are widely rejected, only to see them implemented and having to suffer the fallout (which was all pointed out before the fact).

Namely traffic in towns.

One town close to me had a large expensive traffic system overhaul to reduce pollution in the town center. Great we all said, that can be a good thing and may help attract shoppers to the area.

What actually happend? The town spent £800,000 on the new system, which did indeed reduce the traffic in the center - the issue? All the cars are now waiting backed up, often up to a mile out of the center. Getting from one side to the other now takes twice as long, its reduced the number of visitors and shoppers - and you know what my main problem is? This traffic is not waiting, engines running OUT SIDE OUR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS. So we have an empty town center, free of smog and traffic - but instead have parked it right next to our kids. What a complete and utter disaster.

All foreseen by anyone with half a brain cell and two minutes to write a letter telling the local council this. Such crap like this happens all over the country all the time, as if council taxes arnt high enough we constantly waste and re-waste money on schemes that leave us poor and worse off.

Sorry that turned into a bit of a rant. Its hard not to care

@ mister smith and Biigs.....WOW! So you two, if I start the general 'British Library'....will you two start your respective threads and post a link in the 'Library' please? I'm sure Puterman will start a geology/geography one and maybe McCleod would like to be our weatherman. Cody could start one on say British pubs and art may be?

I'm guessing the best forum would be General chit chat for the Library and then the submitted links on that thread would be in the relevant sections.

Yes, fine.
We could try a miscellaneous section, and see if any subjects repeating there needed their own space.
Lots of serious pictures.
Absolutely none of this sort of thing -

Unless you like cats, that is.

Yer canine has a point ...
But in reality he's just jealous.
If he bites the postman, the owner gets his collar felt.
My cat could trash the entire neighbourhood - and the Law is helpless.
Dogs are property, cats are free spirits - under the law.
That's the source of their cool.

mistersmith.

PS. And without a cat, I wouldn't even know what swan tastes like...

Sorry Jane but i just dont think a British topic board is really worth it, while we have our issues we cant expect our own board unless something changes/happens in our lands that takes a global focus.

You had a nice idea but there is plenty of good opportunity to express and support British ideals in the boards already without wanting to have an exclusive area to do so.

Feel free to create UK and British (which i recently heard is not the same, hence separating) threads and i and countless others will support in the name of our Great Nation.

We are world patriots, we do not need a special place to participate in my opinion.

No, it did not bomb.
Something like that is there for the long haul, background rather than headlines.
You could, for example, make a point of noticing threads with a British interest and adding a link in the Library thread yourself.
in the long term, there would be enough public awareness that other people would do it.
