Storm's over my house at the moment. One fence panel blown out, tree branches everywhere, the oak tree across from us is being whipped to pieces and I can see that at least one tree is missing from the horizon of the forest at the bottom of the hill. So yes, it's nasty here in Essex.

This morning i was saying to my partner that this over hyping of the weather will do more harm than good. So i get everything you have just said.

When i was saying "It's better to be safe than sorry". I wasn't talking about how much i agree with how the media handles these situations, i was talking about people in general handling themselves well.

I'm not in the UK, but we are having quite a storm here as well.

A tree fell on a driving car, both occupants are injured..:

I'm in Amsterdam by the way..

So, a non-event then? Over-hyped and sensationalised like a terrorist threat...but of course, it could have been bad, best to stay hyped up and fearful because of what if?

I have a feeling that anyone who says it was over hyped or a non event, has had it lightly. Only takes a look at the news to see what some people have suffered with.

It's always a non-event when you're not where the mess is.

Definitely not a non-event here in Essex. There are trees blown down around my parent's house. And halfway through writing this message I looked out of the bloody window and noticed that the house opposite has had a tree fallen on it. So hell no, not a non-event. Anything but.

Update for the Netherlands/Amsterdam:

we are having up to 130km/h winds, and a code red has been issued.
People are advice to stay indoors.
Train traffic has come to a stop, and air traffic almost completely too.

A lot of trees are pulled out of the ground.

Edit; the local news station just rectified an earlier broadcast, where it was said that someone died because of a tree that fell on this driving car. Apparantly the man in question is ok, he is in the hospital though.
Luckily, no lives were lost thusfar.
My apologies for trusting the earlier broadcast.
edit on 28-10-2013 by AnonymousWitness because: Person did not die, he is 'oke', but in the hospital.

Well.. Monday is here and nothing as of yet where i live... I'm in Yorkshire.

There's a breeze.... but that's just like our summer.

Best wishes to those affected by this, never fun having your home or belongings damaged.

Have to say though, was frankly rubbish up here in North Yorkshire (my bit, anyway). Windy as hell yesterday - about 12 hours before the storm hit. Then last night / this morning there is not really enough wind to even get a kite aloft - seriously. Bit confused by that as well as its windy to the north and windy to the south but just.......pretty still here.

That said, lots of rain so probably more flooding ahead. Although living in York means that flooding is an ever present!

ETA:

We did have a tornado down the road (about 8 miles away).........but that was on Friday.

I've just seen a BBC reporter in Brighton (English sud coast) report that "two trees have LITERALLY fallen over".

WTF are these trees ? Trees that LITERALLY read books, magazines ? Surely that's more newsworthy than this non event.
"We're going live to Brighton where a tree is LITERALLY reading a book" ... I'd pay good money to subscribe to that channel !

Maybe my gallic ears misheard. Maybe the reporter said litorally. Maybe the trees have gone for a swim in the shallow waters off the beach ? Hell I'd pay serious money to see that kinda thang, LOTR trees that walk n swim n read books.

I couldn't care less about this event. Utter hyped by the mainstream media and reported here parrot fashion on ATS by those who ought to know better. Like I said earlier, had this happened in the north of UK, in continental Europe then coverage would have been zero. Had it happened in USA, hell the BBC would've charted an Airbus A380 to fly their whole newsroom to the US east coast ... and this forum would have been deluged by threads & USA type people running about yelling "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD".

BBC. I'm really starting to hate that smug, self serving & middle class organization.

Anyway, to the Pretty Pollys who repeat what the BBC say instead of thinking for themselves ... "Polly want a cracker. SQUAWK SQUAWK" ... quite literally

Apparently there are around 6 deaths per year in the UK from falling trees.
www.aberdeencity.gov.uk...

You might ask how this storm is newsworthy given regular winds of 80 mph annually somewhere in the UK?

"It said the expected wind strengths would be similar to storms in March 2008, January 2007 and October 2000." www.theguardian.com...

Other leading news stories today could be:

"The Biggest Criminal Trial In UK History" arguably the start of a damming indictment of the UK media (who are reporting the storm)
www.bbc.co.uk...

Another revelation that so called elected Governments are undertaking illegal electronic theft from citizens:
www.bbc.co.uk...

The last thing I want to be doing is thinking about hacking, collusion and corruption in social power elites...this storm gives me a welcome break to think about how lucky I am that my roof hasn't blown off.

I think you may have the meaning of literally a little off.. "3. actually; without exaggeration or inaccuracy"

I think you mean - Literary. "3. versed in or acquainted with literature; well-read"

We ( the USA ) have been getting some photos out of the UK this morning. Downed wires and power outages mostly. Stories of property damage and of loss of life are heartbreaking. . Good luck guys. Keep warm.

PS I have layered on socks and a hat to go to bed when we lost power in an ice storm. Brrrrrrrrrr .

Yes please, that would be awesome, and much more in keeping what the media kept on promising us.
