And the Russian military collapsed, along with their production capability. If you really look into their military status you will see that they are still years away from being the threat they were during the Cold War. Just because they didn't have a recession like other countries doesn't mean that they are still the military powerhouse they once were.

What I am trying to tell you Zappy, and what you seem to have certain problems understanding, is that the russkies , like us, have sufficent fire power to annihilate all life on earth many times over. Or did you think a military high level confrontation at sea would stay there and not spread to the the rest of the worlds bases, when we and the russkies lock horns and fight to the death?

Wake up Zappy!!!

Anyone of us or them taking things a smudge too far and we all go.

Y'all should listen to John carter... This is how it would end if US/Russia got
proper serious about fighting.

Chest beating is what condemns us as a race.. and holds us back as a species.

A fight over Syria is not going to go nuclear. If you live your life afraid of that it's not going to be much of s life.

Russian sub deployments though don't last nearly as long as American deployments. They've never been able to stay out longer than a couple of months between maintenance and crew i issues. Given the state of the current Russian military, which even Russian commanders say is poor, even if they did see this coming months ago they would have to rotate subs through the region fairly often. The carrier group has constant ASW patrols going on around them, and would have to miss every single one of these rotations as they happen. That means that either the US ASW program is utterly pathetic, or Russian equipment has suddenly jumped decades ahead of where it has been.

Never under estimate The Russians. Remember this:-

This is the third time the Moskva has gone through the Med since tensions have gone up. What you can't have normal deployments anymore?

Boys....AVENGE ME.......AVENGE MEEEEEEEE!!!!!! Wolverines!!!!!!!

This will not be good for anyone, especially the young men and women who did not sign up to fight alongside terrorists. That is who we are backing. The same scumbags who attacked us. Do you think the Soviets would back the Taliban or AQ after Afghanistan? Hell no. We all know what they do to Muslims or anyone else who opposes them.

They DO NOT play chicken.

I have abetter grasp on that than a lot of people do. But what does that have to do with the Russians sneaking subs into the Gulf after our carriers? IF this were to become a fight between the US and Russia it's not going to go nuclear.

Yeah right....and you have the inside word on that? You really think you know what goes on in Obamas or Putins heads or the Joint Chiefs of Staff, when all hell breaks loose in the MED? Or the heads of the russian Joint chiefs like Col.Gen. Leonid Ivashov, who recently said they are ready to use military power to defend Syria or Iran.

I am not afraid!
I lived beside a nuclear submarine base for 30 years. I am used to living with the thought
of destruction in a flash.
I don't worry or care any more.

Just pointing out that I agree with John carter... No-one can say what would happen
after the first shots.

Accidents and anger rule the minds of men, as does pride and vengeance.
No one knows how it ends .....

The sub in the Gulf is highly questionable. There is not a good source for it and a lot of if and maybe. But I don't underestimate them in the least. I grew up when they were much more of a threat than they are now. I am looking at their military realistically. They'll put up a hell of a fight, but they are rebuilding which means they don't have the capabilities they did.

All this bravado only makes me think of the British defeat at Ishandlwana...

The British and colonial troops were armed with the state-of-the-art Martini-Henry breech-loading rifle and two 7 pounder artillery pieces as well as a rocket battery. Despite a vast disadvantage in weapons technology, the numerically superior Zulus ultimately overwhelmed the poorly led and badly deployed British, killing over 1,300 troops, including all those out on the forward firing line.

Battle of Isandlwana

Men with sticks wiping out the most advanced army in the world with state of the art weaponry.

First rule of war, Never underestimate your enemy!!

You need to ask this question! What if Russia .. as you say are not a match for the US...
but what if they don't want to lose! That's the unknown part!

Also what if by sheer good leadership and military strategy the Russians are winning.....
Will America accept defeat?

The answer to the latter is no they won't, and the former is, i doubt it.

Pride and vengeance... think about it

We've been in worse positions than this and it hasn't. If it hasn't by now then the odds are against it over something like Syria.

You know what, screw it. Who needs to study the military forces or anything. A post in another thread is right, all you have to so is run around screaming we're all going to die. You guys are right we're about to see WWIII, and it's going to go nuclear. We're all gonna die.

That might be so, but then, 16 trillion cubic metres of gas outside Syria and Libanon might disagree with you. And so might some giant oil and gas companies with major saudi owners and lets not forget some wall street cronies and congressional whores hoping for future pay outs an etc., etc... (wide grin)

the vid might be a couple of years old, but the resources are there for the taking by the strongest.

You would think that someone would have thought of drilling small missile/atomic torpedo silos in the sea there that could be used to destroy any ship they wanted to. They could say they were testing for oil under the sea and plant these things without anyone knowing. No ships needed to destroy an aircraft carrier or warship, just booby traps. I can think of that, so I am sure that someone within the military of a superpower could think of that.

This is quickly becoming another Cuban Missle Crisis. I believe that Russia is very serious about Syria. They have let things go in the past, but Syria is different. With their own people manning air defense stations, it only seems plausible that they would take a threat to attack such systems by the US, seriously.
The Syrians are the ones behind their airdefence, just to let you know.

My hope, is that we do not attack. I believe this is quickly getting out of hand...

Yeah and it ain't Khrushchev from Russia. Putin won't blink. I don't think he's bluffing.

Secondly this is different. Cuba is just off the American coast. Syria half a world away.
