Looks like Israel and the US decided to "test" an anti-missile system during heighten tensions

It's obvious they are probing Syrian defenses, to see which radars are turned on, what action if any was taken. Just a little provocative though, you think?

The scary part is that Russian radars detected the missiles first, so the Russians are there and on alert.

Isn't launching a missile that could be mistaken as a ballistic missile without prior warning kind of dangerous? Subs can launch nuclear capable ballistic missiles and from the initial report it sounds like the Russians believed it to be a ballistic missile at first. It's fortunate everyone kept their cool.

Please somebody correct me if I'm wrong....but aren't you under international law, maritime or otherwise, supposed to report/announce that you are carrying out a 'practice' firing of missiles before you launch?

Plausible situations:

1.The US is going to declare war and is doing some final adjustments/preparations
2.The US wanted to scare someone/make someone thing something was going on (Russia) in order to have them fire back, causing a Russian provoked war

Sir Russia and as we know it...is not backing down. This is not about Syria and its so called FSA, this is the real deal and those involved have already moved away from major cities.

Life has been good.

Someone please answer me this: WHY why would Israel test an anti missile system, that is supposed to track and kill targets traveling at great speeds, at an anchored target?"

I contend that this was solely Israel (explaining why they claim joint op with us and the US claims no knowledge) attempting to provoke a reaction from Syria that would justify retaliation AND let Obama move in faster.

Yes yes! Two Tumbs up! its a depp question!

"Blue-" and "Black Anchor" missiles are target missiles designed to simulate inter-theatre ballistic missiles. They have been used as targets several times before.

It wasn't an anchored target, though it might have been fired from an anchored ship. The "Anchor" is the name of a class of target missile.

if you're in such a rush for a killing to start, why don't you die first?
with people like you chances to get it right next time are close to 0.

I was under the impression that it was ARROW and the ANCOR system wasn't spelled anchor as they spelled it when presenting.

Regardless.. it shows up on radar as missiles and the technical stuff doesn't change the fact that it was an obvious provocation.

Calm down there house cat!!!! It was just a test...nothing to get panties in a wad. NK tests nukes all the time and they dont give any warning and what happened today was not even CLOSE to that.

...you are missing the point. This test raised a false alarm and appeared as missiles heading towarda Syria on radar. I wouldn't exactly consider NK a role model and they are sanctioned for those tests. This was an attempt to provoke a response out of Syria to get the US into the war faster.

They've been testing them all summer and for the last five years. I don't know if this particular launch was provocative. Obviously one is free to interpret it as such.

My main point was to squash the wild idea that they were launching missiles at anchored targets and for devious reasons were claiming it was an missile defense drill.

Anchor/Ankor/Ancor is all transliterated from Hebrew's אַנְקוֹר , so I'm not sure one is more correct than the other (think Chanukah/Hanukkah). It just means "sparrow" which is all I've ever seen Rafael reference them in english.

something is not right with this for here is fox news printing the truth?? www.foxnews.com... Israel admitting it was them that did the launch US saying it was a test after denying it.

Now I have got to ask.... for this is ATS..... is this a cover story for the Grays??? Or some other weapon we will launch on Syria, and we jumped the gun by having it seen on Russia Radar.

Or something even more sinister like the left hand not knowing what the right is doing?

Here we go what?
What do or did you think this was?

If it was the first shot in a war, there would be more then two missiles. There would be hundreds of them.
They wouldn't be ballistic, they would be cruise missiles.
Fired from American ships and/or aircraft from the US & allies.

Simply a test of Israeli Sparrow (Not to be confused with the AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missile) target missiles from an F-15 Eagle. The Sparrow missile simulate the characteristics of ballistic missiles such as the SCUD family and others.

The "ballistic missiles" that Russian early warning radars detected over the Mediterranean sea on the morning of 3 September have been confirmed as two Sparrow target missiles launched from an Israeli air force Boeing F-15 during a joint Israeli/US test, performed as part of the development of the Arrow 3 ballistic missile interceptor.

Israeli sources claim the Arrow 3 will have characteristics that will precede any other interceptor operational today. The system will use a new missile developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, which will intercept incoming ballistic missiles using a kinetic kill method, instead of the proximity warhead detonation technique fielded with Israel's current Arrow 2 batteries.

Rafael is developing the Silver Sparrow target to simulate the trajectories of long-range ballistic missiles to support future testing of the Arrow 3, having won a competition against IAI. Its third-generation target weighs 3.2t, and is 8m (26ft) long.

The new design follows the 1.4t Black Sparrow, developed in the 1990s to simulate the Scud-B ballistic missile in support of Israel's Arrow 1 programme, and the 1.8t Blue Sparrow (above), which imitates the more advanced Scud-D.

Rafael has signed a co-operation agreement with Raytheon to market its Sparrow series of target missiles to the US Missile Defense Agency for future ballistic missile defence tests, and also for possible use by other allied countries.

www.flightglobal.com...

In recent years, all the live tests of the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Arrow ballistic missile interceptor involved the use of a target simulating an incoming ballistic missile. This target was developed by Rafael – in fact, this family of Sparrow target missiles enables a variety of flight envelopes to be simulated. As I reported on flightglobal.com, the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) is evaluating the use of the Rafael Sparrow line of air-launched targets for future intercept tests of ballistic missiles. The Israeli company has signed a co-operation agreement with Raytheon for the marketing of its Sparrow missiles to the MDA and other countries.

The Israeli IAF magazine reports that Sparrow family is being upgraded to answer growing operational needs.
The most advanced in this line of targets is the Silver Sparrow – developed as part of the Arrow-3 interceptor programme. This interceptor was developed to defend Israel against long-range ballistic missiles. The Silver Sparrow is the third generation of Rafael’s target missiles. The first was the Black Sparrow, followed by the Blue Sparrow and now the Silver Sparrow.
