It started in prehistory, and is still the greatest divider against us all, and the single most powerful thing slowing and stopping our progress as a species.
We were once told we are different, we are not all the same, some of us are better than others, based of many criteria, race, religion, socio/economic status, height, weight, good looking, or not attractive etc.....
Without all these reasons to divide ourselves out of the whole of humanity, and into smaller subgroups, we would not have the majority of the problems we do at present.
Just the way I see it honestly.

Isn't the question really "what is the biggest lie told by humanity"?
But maybe I'm just playing semantics, I'm not really sure. There could be a great deal of difference between those questions.
I think you are asking what do we think is the biggest lie believed by humanity, which is a third question altogether...ahhhhh, my Brain is about to explode!
Honest answer...the belief in an afterlife.

The greatest lie ever told to me as a child was, Santa Claus is real.
The greatest lie ever told to me as a young adolescent was, money doesn't grow on trees, you have to earn it. Yet our gov't and banks just print it or takes it by force.
The greatest lie ever told to me as a college student was, you need a degree to make an honest living and it will provide you with job stability.
The greatest lie ever told to me as an adult citizen of the U.S.A. was and still is, that taxes are necessary for a functioning society.
All that said, the greatest lie ever told to humanity, in my opinion, is not so much a direct lie, rather, a complex web of sins of omission, "white lies" that need to be told to keep order. The biggest of all, "that all men are created equal". I mean seriously, someone born with a genetic disorder, mental condition, or just born into the wrong environment, is on equal footing and has the same opportunities as everyone else? No, they got the shaft. In order for all men to be equal, the haves must give the have nots what they need: food, shelter, clothing, money, education, jobs, medicine, surgery, organs,... and hope, love, direction, discipline, laws. We must raise humanity up, and we should, but the idea that all men were created equal is a farce. You get what you get and you have to do the best with it you can, and help people when you can, how you can. I am sick of Utopian idealists who are putting the cart before the horse. We as humanity must change things, and we can, through science and morals. But it is not enough to say it, identify the problems and solutions, we all must do it, and do it like an involuntary muscle contraction, without direct thought, it just gets done.

Or, the denial of an afterlife.
One of us is lying.

Nature is not only the spring rain that you want us all to hold hands and dance in, it is also the lion that sinks it's teeth in to the throat of a young gazelle. You need to get honest with yourself. That's just the way I see it.

On our planet carnivores might exist, but given the size of the universe and our own chances we are here it is not unlikely carnivoric life might just be considered something as evolution gone wrong and other advanced civilizations consist of herbivores.
Some animal at some time started eating other animals, this allowed us to experience this world like you described because of the extra energy and because it took less time compared to growing and harvesting food (which the prey does matter of fact) but maybe it was not meant to be that way in the first place, just a choice by some animal for some reason which affects us all to this day.
Not so much a lie unless there is the belief this is all how it is supposed to be and therefor truth, which we all assume I guess so not to feel bad or lose taste for meat most can't help themselves with, myself included. But if there was an alien invasion tomorrow which kindly explains us how we are all defective because we developed by eating meat and need to be exterminated I wouldn't be surprised or might not even resist.
