Not to be a wet blanket or anything....but "liberal" has nothing to do with "liberty". You are thinking about the term "libertarian", which I am a staunch advocate of.

"Liberal" means more like "heavily applied". A liberal government is one that is "heavily applied". As in, they insert themselves into everything in the most insanely bureaucratic ways.

Hate to be that guy, but he's actually right. But you are too! Everybody wins!

Textbook liberalism, especially J.S. Mill era liberalism (which I'm a staunch advocate of) mainly concerns itself with liberty and equality.

American liberalism is quite similar, however it's also rather related to social democracy. As such, the modern liberal tenet of positive freedom is put into overdrive, meaning state programs and unnecessary bureaucracy for everything.

On the topic of liber- monikers, I'd like to call myself a libertine.

Do you believe you own your child?

Is your kid property - or a member of the community?

If you abuse your child - is that your right? Should the community have no say in how children are treated?

What about education?

If you choose to home school your child, and bring your child up in a religion without any access to or influence from outside influences or opinions - is that not also indoctrination? How does this benefit the child - either now or later as an adult?

edit to add: I see that a few others have asked/said the same or better - I really should read more than the first post before replying

But, as long as I'm here - and if you're still interested - why do you feel threatened by what she's saying?

Yes - she did actually use the word collective - ooooh scary :-)

Do you know what it means?

She said it' not JUST the parents responsibility - the community also has an interest in children - as it does with all other members of the community.

From the dawn of our existence we have lived in groups - we live together, work together, play together, nurse and care for each other - feed each other, fight with each other (believe it or not - for the common good most of the time)

Your paranoia would make more sense if she was saying that kids should be isolated and taught only one point of view

That isn't what she said

:-)

Who's responsibility is it, to see to the education of a child?

I'd love to see the statistics on home schooled, private schooled versus public schools

I bet that home schooled, private schooled, are smarter, and more successful than its public counter part.

Did anyone read the recent news about the largest cheating scandal in this countries history?

Wasn't about the kids that was about money because those kids "belong to the collective"..

Ps there is indoctrination in public schools, the one size fits all to education doesn't work.

The parent - in an ideal situation - would want their child to be educated. That includes learning about the world by being in the world. That includes learning to live with people. That means - community

We don't do our kids any favors by editing out the realities of the world

That means letting them be in the world beezzer

What are you afraid they'll learn? Something different from what you want them to learn? Hmmm....what would we call that then?

:-)

Teach your kids how to think - not what to think.

They'll be fine no matter where they are or who they're with so long as they can think for themselves

More money thrown at the problem is not the solution to better education. If that were the case, America would already have the model system of education that everyone would follow. Take a small look at how we stack up in price vs performance.

It's the liberal parents who ALLOW their children's minds to be subverted and subjected to the socialist re-education system some people laughingly call the public school system.

It's the drug addled and missing parents who ALLOW their children's minds to be subverted and subjected to the socialist re-education system some people laughingly call the public school system.

It's the parents who've lost control of their own lives who've surrendered their children to the systemata.

It's sad. A good chunk of this generation may be irrevocably brainwashed....save for those few who have the foresight to get a football or basketball scholarship to a college. And use that scholarship wisely.

That, or the inherently brightest of the children drop out of the systemata to get out into the real world to make something of themselves, using school dropouts like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg as their role models.

Other than that, what can we conservatives do about the dumbing down of America in our socialist public education system? Well, we can form better neighborhood crime watches and such. There's many routes we can take to protect what is our from what they want to steal from us.

That's correct. The parent(s).

Teach them about the world, teach them about the community. Teach them the laws, science, history, culture, languages, the arts.

But never abdicate that responsibility to the community. Never let the "village" take over that responsibility.

Kids....here's the hard reality of life in America.

If you don't get off the drugs.....if you don't get yourself into a trade school or somehow learn a trade.....you go on the welfare roles.

The list of names on the welfare database are there forever. For every future employer to see. The longer you are on welfare, the less your chances are of landing a decent job.

The U.S. unemployment rate dropped in March despite weak hiring — but that's because people without jobs who stop looking for them are no longer counted as unemployed. More and more Americans are retiring early, going back to school or survive on government programs.

WASHINGTON — After a full year of fruitless job hunting, Natasha Baebler just gave up.

She'd already abandoned hope of getting work in her field, counseling the disabled. But she couldn't land anything else, either — not even a job interview at a telephone call center.

The reality is that the rich get richer....while the socialists get poorer.

World's Largest Yacht Launched Thursday....
t.now.msn.com...

What? You can't even afford gasoline for the clunker car of yours that needs a new battery you can't afford?

While socialists sit around looking for someone to blame for their clunker car.......the world moves on past you at an ever increasing rate of speed.

It's a sad message....but it's the truth.

Always waiting on statistics from the liberal media?

Last I heard, the liberal media doesn't pay the audience to read statistics.

There are statistics...and then there are those damn socialist statistics. The ones that keep socialists waiting....and waiting...and waiting............

It's like the socialist hitchhiker standing on the side of the NASCAR track wondering why no cars are stopping to pick them up.

How do you go about teaching them about the world then?

Is your view the only view they're allowed?

You don't really like the village beezzer - you don't trust it

Are you an isolationist then?

If robotics gets any more advanced we will all be out of a job.

All of these people complaining about welfare need to wake up and smell the technology. We will all be unemployed or relegated to menial customer service jobs while the majority of work is done by artificial intelligences. This isn't something to be scared of.

Early retirement for us all. The end of world hunger. The end of infant mortality. The end of death from old age.

So much to look forward to, because the times they are a changin'

This is the liberal mindset. Your kids are not your kids. No, they belong to the state. Much like Hitler used to think. You, as an American citizen, are not even entitled to the children that you produce. No, the state OWNS your kids now.

So who here doesn't see the historical reference to Nazi Germany through the eyes of the brainwashed nanny state liberal? Because honestly, it's becoming more and more clear every damn day.

I wonder, why was that both parents had to work again? Oh right, so the state could raise your kids.

Real change, yes he did.

(visit the link for the full news article)

c'mon...really??.....now it's Nazi Germany to invest in education as a community, a locality, a state, or a country?....so the hell with taxing people for education and schools, everybody is on their own?...if a parent can only find a job at mcdonalds, starbucks, sears, etc. how are they to pay for private education???.....you are at war against the poor. how much do you think people get paid for a part-time minimum-wage job, with no benefits?

Nope. But I don't teach my child how to hate (racism) I don't teach them how to divide and categorize (progressivism)

You don't really like the village beezzer - you don't trust it

Nope. I don't trust the "village" because the village doesn't care about the individual. Only the collective.

Are you an isolationist then?

You ask that of someone that has immersed his family into different cultures and different countries?

This has nothing to do with what a liberal has in mind! Nazi Germany was not liberal, they were fascist meaning corporate dictates instead of the people.

The American right are corporatism...fascist.

Oh yeah corporate products feel free to vilify the right all you want fact is there is only one group of people making people buy corporate products law.

That would be the "liberal" aka progressives.
