Yes, people do... as they should when presented with an unsubstantiated claim of the bizarre. The fact that he earns "a few thousand bucks" writing books on the topic is just one more reason for increased scrutiny.

The concept that an advanced race of beings here on earth could exist is very possible.
Look, ANYTHING is possible. Or almost anything. The Chinese Premier may be a secret delegate from Zeta Reticuli, and the Titanic could have been sunk by a giant dinosaur who lived underwater. The LHC at CERN could be 100% fake, with computer simulated events displayed to the public as if they were real, while the money allegedly spent on the project is stashed away in mafia accounts. Mikhail Gorbachev might have been an avatar of some Hindu deity, and the Moon could be a soul catcher. And have an atmosphere.
Frivolous speculation with no facts to lean against is just not a productive way to use one's mind.

Look what I found about Charles Hall.
There are Tall Whites going to the shows at Cesars Palace - could somebody over there just take some pictures?
And look, you can buy his book, too!
I love those scams! Someday, I will write such a story, too.. "My days in MK Ultra and how I learned to love our reptilian Overlords!" - I will place it in the stories-forum but it will be super-completely credible, because of all those facts I will scatter over it. Facts I learned from other scammers that is, of course.
Conspiracies, you amaze me every day anew.

I swear, it almost seems like some people are getting paid to refute with the "he just did it for money" explanation. Why are there so many who are not willing to open up to these possibilities? When I came to ATS (a proficient conspiracy site), I expected some resistance towards this issue but not at the level I'm seeing.

WHY ON EARTH would you put down such an INTELLIGENT comment?

Never even dawned on me that CERN and the LHC could be a complete fake.
I just thought it was a scam used to get money for something we really didn't need to live here on earth.
The Mafia isn't behind CERN, physicists are capable of scamming people, they aren't dumb.

I don't understand why you people think everyone with a book out must be a scammer. If you had something that interesting to report, wouldn't you want to write a book about it too? And of course it would be for sale; you wouldn't just give it away for free. I don't get you guys.

I wonder if nearby is nearby as we know it to be or so distant that it cannot be seen by our furthermost satellites?
is a very low-mass red dwarf star about six light-years away from Earth in the constellation of Ophiuchus, the Snake-holder. Barnard's Star is the fourth-closest known individual star to the Sun, after the three components of the Alpha Centauri system.

It doesnt necessarily mean he's lying, but it gives us every reason to believe he has good reason to lie.
As a retired scientist, maybe he needs the money? Just think: all he has to do is use his imagination, contact a publisher, and promote his book, and bang, he has a steady influx of moolah.
This is entirely human, and entirely commonplace. People scam other people like this all the time. Just because he's a scientist shouldn't put him above suspicion.
Here in Las Vegas, an average of 5-7 adult persons are reported missing each day, and more than 200 a month.
