When I said they were the other boogeyman, I meant in the eyes of the American leadership, not in the eyes of the American people. To me, they are Israel's problem, not America's.

They are a direct threat to Israel, and to a lesser degree a threat to the USA, in the end, we are the "Great Satan" Israel is the little Satan.

The dangers with Iran, and especially from any U.S. military aggression on Iran are not in the form of an Iranian military retaliation, as that threat can be mitigated in minutes, and eliminated in hours or less. The real threat from Iran is their terrorist proxies, sleeper cells and clandestine religious groups that have a plan for the destruction of the "great Satan" should the USA be foolish enough to get involved directly in any military strikes on Iran...

Some things are best left alone... IMO

Don't expect anything soon.
This is a waiting game now...

Both sides are in the same boat...they've gone as far as they can go without firing a shot, and neither has a good reason to shoot first... So, all that can really happen is more sabre rattling...

It seems North Korea has been getting ready for war now for how long, 15-20 years. I meam its not like they have much else to do I guess.

The point being I guess it just takes longer for a person or in this case a nation to decide when is a good time to commit suicide.........and I'm sure China has a lot to do with there dicision.

Kind of sad really,.............truly a leason in human nature at its worst.

WHOA KILLER, I really like you and your post but you are so far off base on this one. We were great friends with the Iran until the the A$$aholla of Rock and rolla decided to revolt and overthrow the one stable country in the middle east, not to mention our ONLY friend in the region! I have good friend who had to escape from there.after the Shah fell. Lets not go there...He was a "westerner" and the Islamic right hated him. As far as us screwing them...when? After our embassy was overun. Then what's the first thing the new and improved regiem does with their new FREE country/military...attack IRAQ!.....PLEAASE

We were great friends with the Iran

We were great friends with the Shah...not the Iranian people...that's why it was easy for him to be deposed.

I know we had good reason to get the hell out of Iran...but from the Iranians' point of view, we supported the Shah, who was starving them, because he was opposed to Iraq. Then, when the Ayatollah took over, we switched horses, and got in bed with Iraq...

Under the Shah, Iran was stable, but to their people, it was a repressive regime. I'm in my early 40's, so I remember it pretty well too, and I ended up living in the Middle East just a few short years later. No doubt it was a scary exit for many Americans.

But, I get why they don't like us. Islamic extremists, we support Israel, and previously supported an unpopular Iranian leader.

How long have these threats been coming since like mid-late 2012? N.Korea is picking a fight which they will not win. They need to back off and make peace instead but I doubt that is going to happen. This sums up about all my feelings about this.

after U.S. bombers flew sorties threatening the North.

Perhaps the US did this so that NK would have shot down those bombers, then the US will make up some fake lie that will be released to the media basically saying that NK intentionally fired at the US out of no where for no reason, therefore we now declare war.

This happened many times. Like the USS Maine, and I think Vietnam.

That's one of the most creative efforts I've seen since North Korea started this whole latest series of escalating tensions quite some time ago for making it the U.S.'s fault.

The bombers weren't bright and even I said so ...but to even joke like this, let alone say it's a counter move may VERY well get those bombers coming back and as far more than an exercise this time. It may even get a few bats flying over and crapping real bad days out behind them as they go.

This one isn't the US's fault without a lot more to go on than just how a well publicized and very well known exercise was handled over South Korea and International waters/air. If he got bent, well.. He needs to grow up as a world leader. Not threaten to kill people every time he gets ticked. (We already see that from others who should know better..lol)

I just wonder how far NK would get doing military excercises in the air and ocean, off the California coast.

In this instance, as in instances in previous times, once again, USA is sticking their nose into places it is not welcome.

I'd imagine that if North Korea had been long established and welcome allies to a nation just off our coast? I'm betting we'd deal with it. Will we threaten to nuke Moscow if they have exercises around the northern coasts of Cuba? We never have in modern history and it took nuclear weapons to raise a stink the one time the US did push it hard.

...so your question does have some comparable examples and they show a radically different reaction than Kim and the DPRK.

When South Korea asks us to leave ..and we refuse? Then we're sticking our nose where it isn't welcomed and asked for. Until then, the Republic of Korea is one of the US's closest and most meaningful allies in that half of the world as I've followed it.

Why would they? In the past, this rhetoric has gotten them exactly what they want? Lil' Kim is simply skipping chapters in the playbook and doing more escalated threats within a shorter time period.

Regardless of what you may think, and i find most of you think North Korea would be stupid to attack, there is a larger issue here.

This is and has always been the only state separating China and the US from having their militaries at each others doorstep. For the US its a guaranteed foothold for a large military force in Asia and for China its a nice space cushion to know the US doesnt have a gun pointed directly at its head.

This whole ordeal isnt about North Korea. If ANY shots are fired by anyone itll create a massive conflict. There are too many scenarios to speculate on however an armed conflict of any kind is exactly what we dont need right now.

I think you're entirely correct in looking at the geo-strategic and political aspects of this. The location does make it a major world issue, regardless of anything else. The direct fighting between the standing armies of China and the United States and United Nations forces in the last Korean War is proof to your words.

At the same time, I'd just note that to the leaders and people of North and South Korea? It's very much about them and not the larger picture, IMO. What happens in Washington, Honolulu or Beijing matters little if Seoul and Pyongyang are taking massive volleys of artillery and short range missiles from their neighbor.

The big picture is critical but comes in addition to ...not in replacement of, the local and immediate conflict between the two actual nations who'll be fighting and dying over this if it starts.

Two reasons, one Kim is just a kid to them and im sure that if he doesnt keep his military busy then they will just string him up and take power for themselves. Also, the country has been starved out for years by other countries. At some point they are going to run out of resources to keep the country going. Since they have used this big "enemy at the doorstep" facade for so many generations, Kim could simply not just go ahead and say "ok the we give up" just to have their country back to normal. Imagine all the pissed off people finding out it was all a lie??

They have to do this, its the only option if Kim wants to walk away with his life. I think he got pulled into this leadership thing against his will and wants an out that doesnt involve his men, or his citizens stringing him up and publicly executing him. Provided he doesnt commit any war crimes, and survives through the conflict, he can at least have a chance at rebuilding his country provided he plays ball with the US after defeat and he wont have all these pesky military guys trying to slit his throat for the captains chair. Might even have a chance to fix the place up a bit. Remember, he can always say he was forced into it, which is a very possible scenario.

(LEAD) U.S. dismisses N. Korea's threats as 'pattern' to raise tensions
(ATTN: UPDATES throughout with responses by Pentagon, State Dept., and details)
By Lee Chi-dong
WASHINGTON, March 26 (Yonhap) -- The White House made clear Tuesday that it would not overreact to North Korea's military threats, saying the rogue nation is "following a pattern" to escalate tensions.

"We do look at this as part of a pattern, and we respond in the way that we always have," press secretary Jay Carney said at a press briefing.
Un's next move?? or is it SK's move? got to love 3 player chess now if China would say or do some thing oh they have they built a fence along the China DPRK border that should say to Un
"can not come here if it goes wrong for you, barking pup, that got smacked by paper tiger that now runs and whimpers"

I have a feeling that war with North Korea is a done deal. The U.S. has been waiting for a reason to strike North Korea for some time now. This young cowboy leader has taken the bait and unfortunately his saber rattling is going to cause a lot of innocent North Korean and South Korean lives. His life and that of his blind army will end up meeting their fate. I don't want to sound like I'm promoting the U.S. to attack North Korea, but the way our foreign policy has been since 9/11, I wouldn't doubt that our government is drooling to put a final end to North Korea's antagonizing threats.

I also think behind the scenes, China is getting tired of supporting their unpredictable neighbor.

One can only assume this is just another poorly disguised false-flag operation.

Like I said on another related thread, I think I've read threat, after threat for the past 30 days....from "We've cancelled the Armistice Agreement", to "We'll nuke the white house", to "We're preparing our troops to eliminate the US and their puppet aggressors......same s**t, different day!

Either: Everything we're hearing out of North Korean media is in-fact another pseudo of Rupert Murdock's media empire and it's all propaganda for the western world....

Or: Kim Jong Un is pretty dam serious!

False flag or not, I don't see how anything other then a war on any scale taking place now after all the trash-taking he's been throwing about....how can a leader of any country issue them kind of threats and get away with it???

* The Shah was not at all starving them (Iran was pretty wealthy then, more than now) but there was a secret police and political repression. Today, you have a secret police, political repression and religious repression.

* The USA supported the Shah because he was opposed to the USSR. The USSR supported Saddam Hussein.

Then, when the Ayatollah took over, we switched horses, and got in bed with Iraq...

Taking hostages, and instigating terrorist actions against USA and allies (lots in the 80's), has a tendency to do have some blowback. Don't other nations' leaders also have moral responsibility and choices in their decisions?
