Okey, dokey, pokey....here we go the double bladed sword.

According to this report, America is becoming energy independent. We won't need foreign oil. Natural gas and oil drilling is booming in some parts of America, thanks in large part to fracking and sideways drilling and all kinds of nifty new technological advancements.

Horizontal drilling, it's called.

“One thing I can say with absolute certainty…is that our long-term forecasts are going to be wrong,” Adam Sieminski, EIA administrator, said in a recent speech. “It looks like the direction we’re going ... on oil is there’s going to be more of it.”

Wow. This guy is no friend to foreign oil. Obviously.

"In 2003, there were 1,900 horizontal wells operating in the U.S. IHS estimates there were closer to 45,500 in 2012."

Hmmmmm....this is a report you have to read in its entirety, for yourselves.

Now, for the sake of argument, it's all true.

"If those trends continue, Yergin said, the U.S. will largely be able to wean itself off non-North American oil sources within a decade"

Does all this new found domestic oil vilify or vindicate the Obama legacy?

I mean, it almost seems that with some people, Obama can do NO wrong. Ergo, there's vindication there for the Obama legacy. While at the same time there's the global warming crowd who will scream and holler that Obama didn't do enough to stop domestic oil production (and coal production and whatever is there for yet another discussion).

Just for the sake of the Al Gore argument, tomorrow everyone in America is paying less at the pump per gallon...but paying more for gas masks?

One way or the other, the Obamas will one day leave Washington for their 45 million dollar mansion in Hawaii. Complete with a lifetime of security protection from the Secret Service. They will be surrounded by heavily armed Agents watching the Obama children grow up in the total lap of luxury.

What will the Obama followers have to say about their leader if domestic oil and gas flows like there is no tomorrow.

Read for yourselves....formulate an opinion.

For the record of my opinion, if all this domestic oil and gas forecasting is true, many presidents will have come and gone by the time global warming destroys the planet. If an asteroid doesn't destroy it first. Or an atomic war coupled with virulent plagues and famine.

I personally don't think a lot of people will be thinking of Obama's legacy by then. But, hey, you never know. I just wonder what people think at this very moment.

Politically, and racially, there will always be people who think that President Obama is 'wrong', even when he is right.

As for making the planet / country better off by getting further away from fossil fuels and less pollution; it can't hurt.

Let us for the sake of argument say, in the next 5-10 years we manage to switch the country up to 40% solar/wind/alternative energy, drop nuclear & coal down to 0% , and hold fossil fuels at or to 60% use. At the current rate of production of fossil fuels we'd have an over abundance of oil/gas and the price would have to drop. (Or if you are more cynical like me, be artificially inflated to cost more....)

If at the same time technology improves the efficiency of gas powered vehicles, and reduces pollution as well; while the alternative power industry grows, it'd pay off in several ways.

1- Less pollution.
2- No dependence on external supplies of fossil fuel.
3- Less need for war to secure access to it.

According to the report.....fossil fuel is here to stay..

“The long-term answer is the most critical one,” he said. “We as a nation, we just won’t recognize that hydrocarbons are here to stay as an energy source and it’s a very high-quality energy source, and we can do all we want with wind, solar and algae. I hope all that stuff works. … The fact of the matter is we are going to be using hydrocarbons for some time to come.”

Even though crude is not fossil fuel. Crude was developed by hydrocarbon molecules rising into the air, settling onto the ground and sinking into the soil...etc...etc...

If he really cared, why not focus on magnets that have proven to work. It outlives humans by 150 years and place in the correct angles can create perpetual rotation for good.

All of these money to search for clean energy is a waste of money because it already exist.

Are there enough magnets to go around to do the job?

Oil is here to stay, Lets take just plastic water bottles for example. If you fill the bottle one third full of oil (33%), that's the amount of oil needed to make one plastic bottle. this is based on not material to make the bottle but how much oil is used to manufacture, ship and store the bottle. Throw in plastic bags, plastic cell phones, plastic in cars, plastic in pretty much everything and you get. Oil is here to stay.

What has Obama done to increase oil drilling in America? Anything? Or does he happen to be the sitting Prez while the so called "evil" corporations are developing and perfecting new technologies to get the oil. So far the net result is gas is higher in cost than ever before.

so when obama gets the blame for the gas prices, that just as crazy right ?

As far as I understand it, Obama is the president! Who is Rush again???? Yea right.......

To address the OP. Energy Independence in the US is a dream and nothing more. Do you actually think that our minions of the banking elite will ever pass on anything beneficial to it's citizens? Not very likely, when their actions have proven to be quite the opposite.

My vision of energy independence in the US includes the deaths of the majority of the people who live here. Until that happens...............don't get your hopes up!

It really depends on what his administration is perceived to have done to help or hinder the effort. (And charges of racism here are a cheap shot. Isn't it time you got over yourselves?) Obama's administration has put many obstacles in the way of energy independence. He opposed the Keystone pipeline. He closed down offshore drilling. He won't allow exploration of federal lands. The EPA, in particular has made life incredibly difficult for energy producers.

He has also vilified the oil companies, claiming they don't pay their fair share of taxes when, in truth, the government makes more money off a gallon of gas than the oil companies do. His administration is certainly not the only one that has put barriers on energy growth. Nearly every administration has done it while still proclaiming the goal is energy independence.

In the present case I do not believe Obama, the person, is particularly to blame here. he's a puppet who is being played by people like Valerie Jarrett and other ideologues in the government who would like to see America fail.

The deaths of the majority of people here? I assume you don't include yourself or your family and close friends? Ah, well....spoken like a Viking, I suppose

I wonder if the likes of Valerie Jarrett can stop the entrepreneurial spirit of true blooded Americans. I suppose we'll have to read the history books to find out. Heh?

I live in coal country, and Obama PROMISED to take down the coal industry. He's doing a bang up job on it too, as coal fired power plants are going off line and new (read job creating) ones are not being built.

THE Ohio State University just developed a clean coal system that is fascinating as away to NO burn but steam/clean coal for energy. Couple that with the amazing resources of the Utica and Marcellus shale formations, and the "Rust Belt" (OH, western PA, WV) become Saudi Arabia. Hydraulic fracturing has been done SAFELY for years (no matter what world renowned energy expert Yoko Ono says) in geology LIKE PA, WV, OH. Now that it's becoming profitable the Feds (EPA) are swooping in. This is a states rights issue if EVER there was one.

Obama's EPA is effectively putting federal land drilling OFF LIMITS; has stymied the noted Keystone Pipeline (deferring to the Greenies oh and supporters like Warren Buffet whose trains instead transport the tar sands products south from Canada). Lets see what they "do" to the shale states....leave us alone (allow state environmental agencies to determine state regs) or have will the EPA descend with "one size fits all" micro regulations?

As to the economic impact of shale in the Northeast--go from northern PA to upstate southern upstate NY. The poverty of "green" (the electoral by product of liberal Manhattanites) mandates is stunning. PA is booming and miles away in NY nothing.

Who really runs corporate America? A socialist president giving the socialist voters lip service for what they want to hear? Or the corporations who make the socialist so angry when they are shopping in Walmart?

So, does Obama become vindicated by the majority of Americans if America becomes energy independent....or vilified by the majority of Americans?

What does the majority really think?

Ironically, global warming would create the necessary environmental needs to create more hydrocarbons...hence, more fossil fuel.

I'm not buying the report. It's NBC .. which is the shill machine for the Obama administration. If there were other sources claiming the same thing ... more independent sources or at least multiple sources ... then I'd consider it.

I don't see us becoming energy independent at all. Not at all ...

Yoko has a "gentle woman's" farm somewhere in upstate NY. She, along with her son Sean and fellow non-Ph.d Susan Sarandon have been "touring" (riding around in a luxe stretch rock star tricked out bus--but whose measuring carbon foot prints) telling the "little" people how AWFUL fracking in PA, OH, WV is (no need to worry about her "home state" of NY --he pals in Albany got HER land protected).

As I posted above, the out right poverty in southern upstate NY is stunning; Cuomo has stopped ANY drilling or fracturing for another two years for more enviro "studies" (even though ones already done show no cause for delay). Over the border in PA...jobs and growth.

If the oil companies took their profits and built roads and bridges with them I could agree with you but those are their profits plus they enjoy billions in subsidies, foreign companies don’t pay taxes and they are still drilling on federal lands. Aside from that there are more wells today than before he took office. I am more interested in gaining energy independence through renewable wind and solar energy. It has been stated that either of those methods can supply our country 20 times over.
