If so I don't really follow your logic and to be honest there is a wealth of evidence that suggests both assumptions are very much incorrect.

I'm jewish but I would never insult the tradition of Christians/Catholics. Our religions are very similiar and I respect it. Who cares if there's black/white or even pink smoke. It gave CNN some good footage and people here in Quebec were holding their breaths hoping a Quebecer would be the pope for the first time.
