It'll take a long time for atheists to catch up with all the killing and hatred of religion over the last few thousand years, don't worry yet.
I don't even think non-believers will cause as much suffering in the world as people of various faiths have, but hey, thats just my opinion, as your contribution was.

What? People hooking up together to celebrate life without unsubstantiated scriptures ruling the agenda?
Call it what you like, it matters not. I'm looking forward to meeting loads more people who genuinely do not believe in gods in my area. They are coming out of the woodwork now organised meeting places are popping up under the Sunday Assembly brand

it will fizzle out, you are meeting out of a "negative"- ie, we don't believe in God- it won't last

"LET'S ALL MEET UP BECAUSE WE DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD"

I think a lot of you just want attention, I'm right about that

The fella behind it interviewed on Jeremy Vine's show sounded like a right bellend

Then you are free to avoid such a horror upon society...it is not a press gang

That is a tired Christian deflection . . . Those countries aren't proponents of Atheism (nor are their leaders). Those countries outlaw religion, in all forms, because it takes power from the state . . . if you are able to practice your chosen religion you are not giving your undivided loyalty to the state and it breeds dissent . . .

Try again.

The atheists that crack me up the most are the ones that act dogmatic about it.

A typical conversation.

Atheist middle line: ( I am an atheist but I wouldn’t mind getting together with others like me)

Dogmatic atheist: ( If you do that you aren’t being a proper atheist. You are doing it wrong)

Atheist middle line: (
)

The article did say the ones who seem to be the most opposed are atheists.( You’re doing it wrong)

I've been to the killing fields so I understand your poor argument.
Government brutality and brainwashing under any banner is obviously wrong. Relating such events to a social meeting place for people who do not believe in gods is lame at best in my opinion.

with modern communications and military technology i doubt it will take even 150 years to catch up, non-belief can still be a religion.

While I did say I don't understand the movement, as an Atheist, based on my personal views . . . I certainly don't care if they do it. However, it is clear it opens them to all sorts of criticism.

If you want to consider the Sunday Assembly as some terrible organisation which will hurt the world then of course that is your perspective, and your right to share it here.
I think such thoughts as ridiculous, but I'm sure time will tell...our numbers are growing!

I wasn’t actually pointing to you.

I noticed that you seem to be open to the idea. I don’t see you railing against it. Maybe a little puzzled over such a seemingly enigma.

At first I was as well but as I said I would like a place to gather with like-minded people free of dogma and that is what I see this place as. More like community organization in a sense. It isn’t a bad idea IMO it is just free of worship which has been something that I have avoided in the past. The dogmatic principles have steered me away from other organizations even though I have been interested in some of the activities.

I just see this as another organization with the exclusion of religious practices and nothing more. If it grows to be as powerful as the Catholicism then I fully support it. As long as the purpose is positive in nature.

The article stated that there is interest to start one in Houston maybe it will spread like wildfire. I hope.

like I said, a true atheist celebrates nothing. to embellish on this. an atheist only celebrates what is important to him/her in there life not anybody elses, and certainly not an idea. anybody that would attend one of these things is a poser, and just trying to fit in.

Oh, so you decide what a 'true' atheist is now yeah?
An atheist is one who does not believe in gods, do you not get that?
Do you not get that for some people who espouse such views it is nice to hook up with likeminded folk?
Your opinion is welcome in a public forum of course...I think it is a poor argument though, however much I defend your right to share such an opinion.

k well enjoy your organized religion/ social club, which will soon start asking for money, so they can start having sway over local politics and eventually state, ect and so on. Just like every other organized religion has and will. to me atheists are just a glorified form of a hipster. If i could create a meme right now
it would show a dude with on-rim glasses and a beanie with skinny jeans and the caption would read "gods, there way to main stream"

a true atheist such as myself does not celebrate ideas, only life and death. and I dont know about you, but I believe we live in a world were being of like mind is a rare occurrence so we should not try and shelter ourselfs from different ideas, but embrace them.

What kind of person are you? And you have the nerve to challenge the OP on their behavior or beliefs?

If heaven is populated with your kind, I'll enjoy my time in hell with the OP.

The organisers of the London meet (Pippa & Sanderson) are setting up online groups wherever they have had requests from the most folks to give others the chance to get involved, here's a link to Houston: www.facebook.com...

...lots more as well, Silicone Valley, New Mexico, watch this space I guess.

Sounds to me that your viewpoint is one that rejects any organised social gathering because the definition of non-belief does not fit with your own.
That's ok, you don't have to get involved, it is an invitation you can ignore.

Then here the link to the Wikipedia page maybe you could rewrite it because that is what it says in the first sentence.

en.wikipedia.org...

YMCA has always stood for that. It is the same organization.

Google is your friend.
