My exact words were "what you might think it is".
So it stands and what I think you might think it is probably in line with the popular christian idea of what those things are.edit on 2-3-2013 by daskakik because: (no reason given)

The reason I'm posting this trip down insanity lane is because I'm noticing an ALARMING amount of posts that people are posting about "so and so is demon possessed", etc... - and I'm here to set the record straight.
I notice that most of these threads focus on sexy black girl singers. There's often a psycho-sexual aspect to these fixations, as was seen in the Satanic-ritual-abuse panic of the 1980s.
While we shouldn't discount the possibility that the upsurge of such threads on ATS is the work of a PR flack hired by the record industry—they all seem to emanate from a single poster—it's also worth noting that this kind of tripe plays best in a certain demographic: poor, white, right-wing fundamentalist Christians. Essentially, it's projection—these people are accusing others of what they secretly (though perhaps unconsciously) yearn to do themselves.

I did say it.
Just like I said rebellious kids would seek something that goes against the religion of their parents.
I don't understand why that is clear to you.

I agree but the original question was "how does it generate sales".

the popular christian idea of what those things are
I'm old enough to have lived through the 50's...yep the 50's. Back then we had Rock n' Roll...the spawn of Satan.
The United States is considerably more religious than most Western countries, and the conservative branch of Christianity really started to entrench itself in American culture by the 1980s. Satanic Panic allegations most often came from (and still come from today) conservative and fundamental Protestant Christians. From Intrepid's Link
No artist is demon possessed. It's "an act".
It's what's called an "Alter-Ego" - a personna that you create that is sort of like "acting". Almost every artist does this to some degree. Otherwise we'd see OfficeMax managers instead of freaks on stage - and we DO want to be entertained now don't we? And indeed - an alter-ego is something you give yourself into, play the character full tilt - and really go for it. Saying Beyonce is possessed is like saying Paul Reubens is possessed by Pee Wee Herman.
