A local ministry official said the meteor shower may have been connected with an asteroid the size of an Olympic swimming pool that was due to pass Earth at a distance of 27,520 km (17,100 miles) but this could not be confirmed.

www.reuters.com...

Take it for what it's worth.
IMO...I'm thinking that the coincidence is way to high for this not to be related.

Neither story happens every day, let alone every decade.. Got to be linked..

I have been watching the live feed from ISS for a few hours now but had to go out for 30 mins there. When I put it back on, the picture from the camera was all, breaking up and stayed that way for a while then they put their 'test card' of the earth on when the stop transmission as they do a lot. Never seen the picture break up like that before. Have seen a lot of red and white streaks for hours on and off past few hours.....

Yeah, when some of the astronauts were woken-up this morning they found their internet connection had been down for an hour, plus several electrical problems had occurred. Camera also seems unexpectedly not working correctly.

RT News has a number of updates with pictures of damages inside buildings etc.

RT Live Updates

I found this update interesting:

8:10 GMT: Oleg Malkov, an aerospace scientist at Moscow State University, told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper that the meteorite went undetected by space scanners, likely because it was coming from the direction of the Sun. "We can only register stones coming from the direction of the night sky," he explained. Malkov confirmed that the meteor shower in the Urals was not connected to the 2012DA14 asteroid that will approach Earth in a few hours.

I just can't buy into this... it's way too coincidental for me.

Maybe this asteroid has knocked around some rock debris, or perhaps it's being proceeded by a meteor/debris shower ?

There are no other events associated with a near pass tomorrow... oh yeah? You mean like this one? Coincidental? Isn't it a bit early to be asserting that? From what perspective? Oh, the same one that reported that they "shot it down".

It is entirely within the realm of possibility that an asteroid could have companions heretofore unspotted. These rocks have been cruising the void forever. If some event in its remote past fragmented it for whatever reason, it may be like a group or cluster of objects cruising loosely together. I don't know that either. Just awful damn "coincidental".

I understand yeah, but i can't keep up, it's overwhelming... It was a Meteor not a meteor shower, and 20,000 rescuers have been activated. here is a link.

Big Meteor

Activated or Alerted? Because that link says they have been alerted. That is, their rescuers have been put on notice to be prepared. Seems a reasonable percussion. They have a lot of rescue workers. I'm thinking they are probably volunteers.

Just seen some "news alert" on tv here in Romania.

It says 6 cities (!) affected and more than 500 injured (most minor concussions and/or results of broken glass).

I'm at a safe ~2,000km distance
but who knows where the rain will fall next.

I'm thinking Chernobyl. The roof (over the roof) is already affected by heavy snow, now all it needs is a small meteor push to start releasing radiation again. So it's a good thing the meteor shower happened in Chelyabinsk. There was, however, some nuclear complex pretty close.

Anyone know what kind of debris 2012DA14 can possibly have? To claim this Chelyabinsk thing was linked to 2012DA14 seems like a stretch to me.

I beg to differ she is just scared and her and all of the staff at her work are getting drunk courtesy of the boss.If it is incorrect then it is. I was just sharing what she sent me and she is there so and I am here in vancouve b.c.I find it hard to believe that is incorrect but she is a lawyer not a scientist or journalist. That is what is circulating around her office right now it is full of peoples families that were evacuated out of other parts of the city. And to whoever the A hole is who is questioning my credibility listen pal I am just sharing what I know and was excited to share with fellow ATS members because any time anything happens in the world ats seems to have the best response time and in my opinion you are very rude and crusty obviously someone did not get laid for valentines day and with an attitude like that I would speculate you have not been laid in years!!!

Eyewitness reports from following regions: Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Sverdlovsk, but also in the Republic Bashkiria and the north of Kazachstan.

Debris and signs of impact are spread out over 200km. Three airplanes are currently mapping the impact locations.

Over 400 people injured in six cities, three people fighting for their lives.

Internet and mobile networks down in some regions, and in Chelyabinsk there's no more central heating. They have -6°C at the moment.

Vice-premier Dmitry Rogozin on his twitter account:
“I will bring to Medvedev a straight picture of what has happened in the Urals and prospective proposals of how the country can find out about the dangers approaching Earth and deal with them."
Different Russian politicians don't seem to agree about what exactly happened at the moment.

Source in Dutch, I'm sorry, but they have a good live-update.

Really. Look at the earthquake details > date/time.

or for me

Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 08:13:53 AM (EST) - Eastern Standard (New York, Toronto).

I wouldn't lie to you. Probably.

I find it strange that this happened roughly 100 years ago..

I remember reading the 2012DA14 will have some effects on the satellites.

Could this be such an effect?
