My example used before was ATS.

Again, a world of difference between a private site and laws. For example, not all sites ban hate speech, it is up to them to choose.

Exactly..and I'll bet that guy will be quite relieved to be arrested right now because at least he's in protective custody, and I dare say he won't have to put up with living in Liverpool much longer either because if he thought it was bad before I can only imagine what it will be like when the video goes viral.

The example still applies quite well.

ATS does not allow hate speech. We tackle it. This site runs well and is mature. Other forum sites do not challenge hate speech. It is rampant there and It's also a nasty place to be.

Real life. Hate speech being challenged quells it somewhat, especially publicly anyway. If we do not quell it, it becomes rampant thus a nasty place to be.

From what he was saying he is an immigrant but unable to claim social security benefits. I think he may be on a plane back to his country of origin very shortly.

Now why does that make me feel a little safer?

Marvellous!!! We shall use the "freedom of speech" shmaltz to allow every cretin and Frankie Boyle to be offensive to a great many people as they wish without any form of recourse whatsoever.
Im kinda hoping that the moron that posted his rant has his arms and legs chopped off and his mouth taped up, preferably, permenantly.
Im all for free speech, the right to have an opinion and the right to strike BUT im getting sick of this constant procession of imbeciles who believe it is perfectly ok to be vile because we live in a democracy.
Well it aint!!! Enough is enough.
Tell you what, does a free and democratic society need pond life like him to live amongst us? Exactly what kind of positive contribution does rubbish like that make to the World? Bugger all.
You want to defend him and his ilk? You are as moronic as they are.

I find your words offensive and think you should be banned from the internet.

When you calm down in an hour or so, think about how my post made you feel. How do you think your post would make the poor man in the video feel if he read it?

What nasty place to be? A twitter feed? An online youtube video?

The example does not apply, because we are indeed not talking about real life.

Also, there is hardly any difference a hate speech legislation makes. Hate is best tackled by challenging it with arguments, not laws.

A moot point..you are allowed to say what you think right now, Rising Against is a mod who clearly disagrees with you..yet your thread and posts remain...

Id he started deleting things because he disagreed with something a poster was saying he wouldn't remain a mod for long would he.

Yet, bearing this in mind, the fact that someone is offending those who wrongly died, some of which were yet to reach the age of 15, the offender is being defended right here on ATS. That actually makes me quite sad to be a member.

Well done for this moron being arrested. He can spew his hate in prison.

This is only arrested, usually then its processed and put out. You're going on about prison. You're sad because people here think someone shouldn't be arrested for expressing views, even ugly ones, that is what freedom of speech means, and the minute you lose it, you're in a FASCIST state. Most here know that.

Who determines what's offensive. People offend each other daily, and soon there'll be a law against saying anything but pre-approved speech, delivered via the microchip????

Unless someone RAPES, MURDERS, AND ENSLAVES (there go the controllers), they shouldn't be seeing prison. Prison should only be for serious and dangerous crimes against citizens.

I think you're being very dramatic and over the top to call that hate speech.

He's having an over the top rant against the people of a city, a city he's clearly having a hard time in.

In fact, I think you start to belittle the real victims of hate when you start to call something like that 'hate' speech.

It's interesting that people are not only accepting this story at face value, they're actually agreeing with the chap being arrested and locked up. There is no racism, homophobia, bigotry, religious hatred, xenophobia or anything that falls under the umbrella of hate.

If this story had been put up just 5 years ago people would have been out in numbers claiming there is no way that's all he's done and there must be more to the story.

It's not hate. The person in question appears to be having a bad time in life because of some people from Liverpool. He is angry and upset, he lashed out in a haze of hormones.

I do not believe that somebody should be arrested for having a bad day. And then making a video of it. And then uploading it.

What he said was not hate speech.

I agree with your stance that hate speech is not covered by free speech, but an off the cuff comment about Hillsborough by someone who appears to have just had his life crushed by a gang of scousers, intended to be offensive accompanied by a load of other insults is not hate speech.

That's just your perception, the guy seems quite mad to me and possibly has a persecution complex, maybe no one has done him any harm, he just thinks they have because his life is crap.

And it is hate speech as far as I'm concerned, all the F'ing this and that and telling them that is their warning (and of course a mention of a shooting rampage) he sounds unhinged and if he moved from his computer screen out onto the street and did the same, there would be real trouble.

What a load of rubbish, that's just spouting about ideals for the sake of it. So you would be okay if a random stranger made a youtube video about your family saying that anyone who had already died, deserved to and the rest of them should be shot, just because they think they should be?

I'll bet I could cause enormous offence (and probably get banned) in one post here and all of the defendants of free speech at any cost would agree that I should be banned if it were themselves or their families I was referring to.

You do not have "freedom of speech" here at ATS. Try starting a post about legalizing weed. Freedom of speech is restricted you know.

Is this post a wind up?

You think the guy should be locked away for saying something horrible, and then post something extremely horrible yourself?

Do you think you should be locked up for wanting this guys arms and legs cut off?

I'll defend your right to say that, but given your stance are you able to defend yourself or should you be handing yourself in to the nearest police constable?

It's a bit borderline, in a sense, because putting out an abusive/bullying video, with yelling, swearing and paranoia (blaming a city for a loss of a job opportunity and the employer being told he was nuts, when he seems a bit borderline....). This isn't to me, a freedom of speech issue, its more someone crying out for help.

But it depends on why he's being arrested, they could say anything on the surface, but to me, having someone obviously unbalanced and screaming a gun threat, (even though he prefaced, you're lucky I won't..), means there is some evidence that he's unstable and paranoid, and that he could be a danger to himself and others. So....., this thread is not really about freedom of speech.

That was from watching the video. Without the video it becomes a freedom of speech issue, but with it, you can see it was mental health issue, not saying he criminally insane, but saying he obviously expressed paranoia and could be considered a danger to self and others.

Yes, I did read about that in the T&C's when I signed up, but I agreed anyway and as such have never started a thread on weed, nor do I intend to, so I don't think my freedom of speech is restricted in that respect.

However, I do like to know that the mods on the site will step in and remove anything personally offensive to people

i agree, this is horrible and this man was justly treated.

They are just carrying on the hate of the establishment so many ignorantly carry around here.

Freedom is an illusion and always has been. No one is free.

If he did the same out on the street people would laugh at him, there would be less trouble than him being arrested.

To be honest, I've shied away from saying anything about his mental health because it's easy for someone to snap and look deranged, just like that guy even without having any pre-existing mental issues. I don't think it's fair to label someone as unhinged without any evidence.

As you said, it's about perception. I don't think it's hate speech, you do. That's a fundamental belief that there's no point arguing. We'll just end up going round in circles.

If I'm coming from the point of view that he's not spewing hate speech, and you think he is, there's no point going any further.
