I think there is a major point that is missing from your thought (and the thought of others).
In WWII in spite of the depression we still had a ready base of manufacturing and resources available. Not manpower (which is still available now) but
in facilities.
Facilites that manufactured clothes, parts, machines of all types, steel mils, refineries, shipyards, resource gathering (mines, oil, timber, ect),
and power generation. Along with looser enviromental laws.
So when you went to a war footing in WWII everyone from sewing machine makers to shoe factories could be reset to make something for the war
effort.
Today our manufacturing capability is reduced to a level that is pathetic by pre WWII statistics.
You cannot retool what does not exist.
Our resource processing capacity (example steel manuacturing) is low to some sectors non existant.
Our energy producing (much less delivery( is already almost to the breaking point every summer much less being able to handle a massive manufacturing
push.
Our resource producing capacity (wood, coal, oil, minerals) is also low. Also added to it are the enviromental constraints.
Our enviromental laws are so stringent and their supporters are so rabid you be hard pressed to convince them to change in time of war much less the
buracracy letting loose the reigns.
I wont go into the human side except to say how do you get people to sacrifice when they scream bloody murder when they cant get on FB for a day?
The truth is we have lost our main strength that enabled us to absorb the losses initially incurred in WWII (due to incompidence, arrogance, and short
sightedness) and not only learn but out man/equip/produce the japaneese/nazi's.
Trust me our enemies know (and in the case of china we depend on) our weaknesses better than we do.
