It looks as if we are heading for a conflict between Russia & NATO faster than I said it would, but now Russia are standing up to NATO really strong, see the link below.
I really do feel that NATO needs to be shown it's wrongs, and now it will be I am certain of that.

I think the cold war never really ended. This is an example: VT: Pentagon Held Secret Meeting With Nuclear Industry 2003

here is another story today about it from RT.

‘US, Russia plunging into new Cold War’

Tit-for-tat moves between Russia and the US are plunging the two nations into a new Cold War, says Russia expert Stephen Cohen. Washington’s longtime policy towards Moscow is to blame for the growing tensions.

I'll be practicing what I learned at school and see what tables I can fit under. This isn't good. I'm eager but at the same time nervous as to what other moves will be taken in the coming weeks. :/

Thanks for the post OP. S&F

Nato does need a good shake up. As does the un security council. Having said that this news does not surprise me now putin is in full swing again with his dodgy plastic face. Don't think having him back will help ease tensions.

Yeah... and some people seem to hold the view that the Russian Federation is just a big version of Iraq or Afghanistan for stomping if we choose to stomp them. Where did some of this thinking come from? Good Lord... In 1990, George H.W. Bush amassed an army of 500,000 men to end a problem with Iraq simply occupying the tiny nation of Kuwait. Not to invade Iraq mind you... HALF A MILLION was just to clear Kuwait. THAT was called approaching enemies with respect...and it's way it was a victory without question. The last we've had....and may ever have at this rate.

Now? The world must think we've gone mad to hear anyone even talk about U.S. vs. Russia as if this has suddenly changed 180 degrees in 20 years and the nation that helped us invent the MAD concept is now one we can "defeat".

Since Dec 21 flopped like that clip of the guy diving onto a frozen pool recently...we need to ask then, WHY did Russia spend an enormous amount of money so it's Moscow population can all be underground in bomb shelters? I mean, I don't think the U.S. has even built ONE civil defense shelter since the 80's,,,IF any were even being built then. Russia has built 5,000 of them in their Capital city alone. Hmmm?

I think Putin has been a step or two ahead of our little game of checkers ...while he plays 3-D Chess.

If people think our intelligence services believed for one minute that the original Cold War ever ended they are mistaken. The men in charge of such things are not fools.

Contrary to others, I believe the Cold War ended but started again when we "liberated" libya.

Of coarse they still spied on each over during the "warm days" but hell everyone's spying on everyone.

It never really ended despite attempts to reset it here and there. The difference is the Cold War with the Soviets was between two fairly even rivals and their allies all over the planet. Russia is a shell of of what it was in the Soviet days and mostly just trying to not to lose any more influece in its former Soviet states that are being gobbled up by NATO and China. Russia does not want accept its postition as regional power that is only significant because of it large amount of nukes. I still expect that if China manages to survive all the challenges that is has to face and comes through down the road as true world power you will Russia join NATO to survive.

I see no cold war between US and Russian federation in near future. This recent exchange of hostile laws did not damage financial ties one bit. Even military ties are not harmed. Do you know that there is US/Nato semi-base in Russian territory? I'd guess that first sign of cold war will rather be removal of hostile military presence, not banning adoptions.

This is just political games and posing.

Putin is hard-line KGB. That'll never happen.

Think of his pride, especially with Little Guy Syndrome. Look at all the macho photo op stuff he does.

"Economic Wealth"? Where in the West is that exactly? I want to move there!

And, if there were a war, the West is not in a good shape as far manufacturing goes as so much of it has been outsourced to the Far East, along with the resources to kake those goods. Also gone are the skills to even manufacture domestically, not to mention all the scrapped factories and machinery.

Simply waving a wad of cash in the air and proclaiming yourself dominant is meaningless, unless you have the resources, manufacturing and skillset to rapidly mobilise to fight the war. If all those bright shiny war toys start to get damaged, destroyed or break down, you need to be able to replace them quickly, unless of course arrogance dictates that it would be a walk in the park and over in a week with little or no losses?

Both countries did pretty well economically during the cold war. Things have gone to crap now so maybe they are hoping a 2nd cold war can fix things. Seems legit since a large scale hot war wouldn't fix squat right now or anytime soon.

If it gets any colder it will be an Ice age war, not just a cold war.

Don't bother slamming the Russians for inventiveness, bravery or intelligence. They are all of these and more.
As I have previously stated the cold war never ended it was enjoined by china and Iran when Russia took a break to regroup.China has been having an inflationary growth I wonder how long they can sustain it with ghost cities being built everywhere?Maybe that is why they are demanding more fishing rights in the Pacific?
Iran will self implode in time.
We know Putin and he knows us.He must be laughing real hard as we struggle for our very identity in the US under a socialist leader.
The wolves smell the blood of our wounds and are drawn in by it.

The west have no chance of winning a war with Russia because China signed a pact 2 years back to help defeat America together. Also remember the nations that can protect it's people are winners in war, the west decided not to protect as we had no money to do it. Russia has wealth, they don't buy Gas from us, we buy from Russia, that is with money not pea nuts.
America like France & UK now don't make enough steal between them in 5 years as Russia makes in 4 months, if Russia decides to close the sea routes the UK dies as we build nothing.
Sorry but I put my money on America not winning a war, the UK even shut down and disbanded the Royal Obs Corps as well as our Aircraft makers and ship builders, Russia did not do that.
Another reason we wont win is that the Russian people see they are worth fighting for to hold there country, in the UK & NATO we got nothing worth dieing for, ops sorry apart from dept.

Conflict between powerful nations, in my opinion is always a bad thing and ought to be avoided.

But...let's be honest, through regular visits to sites like ATS and others, we're all a little more 'in the know' regarding many events and happenings that have gone on, especially deviant political practices around the world than most people are, and we can afford to be a little more philosophical about an impending new 'East - West cold war'.

The 'original' cold war was actually boon to humanity...sounds odd, but it helped us all in many ways, and apart from a background dredd of mutual assured destruction with only a 4 minute warning of being blown to bits, it didn't seem to negatively affect most of us living through it.

It encouraged technological progress.

It fostered healthy patriotism, whichever side of the iron curtain you happened to be living on, it was the same for the majority of people.

It created untold amounts of jobs, increased productivity, inspired the space age, advanced telecommunications...the list is long.

Put it another way, most of us know that the old cold war was very beneficial to TPTB, and not just the Western PTB either.

Like all 'good things' it had a natural shelf life and had to come to an end. The cold war, and associated increased industry and economic output, job creation and all the rest of it ended, and so too did a lot of the blank cheques given out like sweets to covert military and black ops, and intelligence agencies.

A replacement was required to fill the gap, and that replacement was (and currently is) 'Terrorism'.

Happy days were back again for all the blank cheque people and for a while, it looked like the party could go on for even longer than the cold war did...but they didn't reckon with the people.

This time around, we had not just emerged from a devastating world war, where if a ranking soldier ordered you to do something, or foregt you'd seen something..you did without question. Such was the mentality of the period during and just after WWII, it's how things were.

Well, it's not how things are now, not by a long chalk. We are better informed now than we have ever been, thanks to the advent of computing and the advancement of the Internet. We are not in the dark, as we once were, and because of this, millions of people question everything from simple political statements, to major events like 9/11 and 7/7 and so on.

In the 1950's we would simply have read the newspapers, listened or watched the evening news and would have believed everything we were being told, without question...we don't any longer.

This is why we are going to be set up for a new cold war...Terrorism, hasn't had the required or desired affect on us, it hasn't transformed into the replacement for the old, productive cold war it was envisioned to become...partly because it was rushed and botched, partly because people just don't buy into it.

A new cold war, now that's a different animal entirely...it has worked in the past very effectively, and i suppose the consensus among TPTB is that there should be no reason why it wouldn't work equally well, or better again.

But honestly ATS, hand on heart, which coercive lie would you prefer to live under...the Terrorism lie, or the new cold war lie?
