Perhaps a disgruntled family member or person living at the house. It happens, although I am not stating that its what happened in this case.

If is in the best interest if the gas LDC (company) that it is not a leak unless it can be proved it is the fault of a home owner. They could be on the hook for millions.

I do not have a actual news report link to back this up, but....

On one of the news sites I read today a person left a comment that people heard something similar to the engine whine of an aircraft right before the explosion happened.

Here is the comment (voted 'down' in the comments section 35 times):

@storm17770: Some near the scene before the explosion said they heard what sounded like an airplane's jets just seconds before. Maybe an errant missile.
wthr.com

However, since it has been report that NTSB was on scene someone took that claim seriously in the beginning.

Now it gets more interesting...

SO URCE: Fox TV 59

Officials from the Indianapolis Division of Homeland Security, Code Enforcement and Citizens Energy refused to speculate about the cause of the explosion. They also couldn’t confirm reports that the home in question had a high amount of gas consumption or a faulty furnace.

“As it stand right now, it’s a continuing investigation,” said Gary Coons, chief of the Homeland Security Division. “We are working with federal departments and local departments in this investigation.”

Coons said the National Transportation Safety Board is involved in the investigation.

National Transportation Safety Board? Theirwebsite says:

The National Transportation Safety Board is an independent Federal agency charged by Congress with investigating every civil aviation accident the United States and significant accidents in other modes of transportation - railroad, highway, marine and pipeline. The NTSB determines the probable cause of the accidents and issues safety recommendations aimed at preventing future accidents. In addition, the NTSB carries out special studies concerning transportation safety and coordinates the resources of the Federal Government and other organizations to provide assistance to victims and their family members impacted by major transportation disasters.

A quick glance at their current investigations indicates all of the ones listed are aviation crashes and train crashes and derailments. I'm pretty sure the mention of pipelines above refers to major pipelines, not gas lines in a housing subdivision.

Yep millions in law suits and fines. At least that is what happened with the Knox County, TN explosion a few years ago. Knoxville Utilities Board faced a 250K fine after that explosion. And they paid to have 1,000s of fittings replaced.

Take a look at this link from the Indianapolis Newspaper, some interesting things in there and there was an earthquake on Saturday in Indiana per this report..

Wouldn't a plane leave plane parts at the scene.

Wouldn't an air burst of a meteor close to the house leave fragments at other houses.

This is someting else

That's not really true.....

Egg smell IS Hydrogen sulfide, a sulfer smell, they are one in the same.

Even NW Natural, a gas company here, says specifically that it's a SULFUR and an egg smell, as you can see here:

Learn what to do if you detect a rotten egg or sulfur odor.

Mercaptan gives off a foul smell, reminiscent of rotten eggs or sulfur.

Yes, and that would be one high tech weapon

What about a drone firing a plasma burst?

Yes, that kind of thing may fit. Wiki has a description here.

Over the past few years a few articles on US military research on a plasma weapon have surfaced. But there is no confirmation I know of proving the existence of such a weapon.

But lets take a look at where that particular rabbit hole is likely to takes us.

IF the event was a result of the use of a weapon, it would be something high tech, like a plasma weapon. That then implies necessarily I think, the association of a military black project. But then you have to deal with it being used on civilians, and IN the US.

Okay, I prefer to see that as not possible.

But since we are in the rabbit hole lets take that idea further. The use of such a high tech weapon (and secret weapon) in a demonstration on civilians in the US would imply one of two things;
1. All is not well between government and military,
2. Or, there is some extremely powerful group/ section of the ruling class that have, through a military arm, this kind of weapon, and they want to demonstrate their power.

We know number 1 happens to be true - take for example the General Patreaus resignation coincidentally in the past few days, just one week before he was to testify on the CIAs response to the September 11 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya. I really don't think though that 1 is the answer.

So let's look at possibility 2. That would seem to be more likely. But to what ends you may well ask? - if you chose to jump down that particular rabbit hole to begin with. Who is the target audience (not us)? Why was this done?

Now this whole post is conjecture because I still prefer to see this as being a gas explosion. However, with regards to the possibility of point 2 being correct, evidence of it being that kind of weapon might be supported in the marked photos -->posted by diesel_actual

Thats what I'm talking about. If a van was full of 55gal barrels of gas, and the fumes exploded it would have blown out from that point. The gas barrels would have sprayed all over the two homes next to that point starting the fire to spread. Other barrels of gas could have been blown through the homes as well spreading the fire even faster.

I think this was a van explosion that the owner of which might have been stealing gas from the bulk fuel storage tanks that are used at gas stations.

After Thought:
"Before I'm asked about a missing crater from the explosion, on an un-aired episode of "Mythbusters" (it was shown on a recent mailbag episode) the Myth was called "Vanishing Van" when the van blew up there was no crater left behind from the van."

WTHR-TV
Tonight we talked to retired bomb technician John Mull about some of the theories being floated as to the cause of the south side explosion. This is what he said. "If you had something like a drone or a plane you would have evidence left behind. They are metal and that type of evidence is going to be there. I have not heard of anything like that being found. If it is meth, you would have different burn signatures from the meth than this, than the gas. You would not get this type of explosion from an instantaneous leak. Whatever is leaking here has been contained and building up for some time undoubtedly to have that type of affect."

So local news is actually taking our theories seriously. This is a good sign in my mind.

Four Homes Destroyed by the Meteor Hit

Today the institution of national aviation and space (LAPAN-Indonesia) conduct investigations in residence destroyed by the meteor. Meteors are falling hit four home residents in Duren Sawit, Jakarta - Indonesia. Investigations were conducted to determine whether it is true that destroyed the house was a meteor.

Currently the team's space Indonesia still continues to do research and testing by using existing materials surrounding the incident in the houses destroyed. Preliminary results of research investigations have been conducted indicate that the possibility that destroyed four homes it is true that due to a meteor that has become dust."

Has anyone though of the possibility that it was a missile?
A Sonic boom was reported.

Death from above...that's what I can see anyway.
Perhaps we're under attack?
Perhaps it is a meteor strike.
Let's see when the Military Brass and NASA show up and an announcement is made.

This keeps keeps getting creepier and creepier.

Why would there be a sonic boom at the location of the fire if it was a missle?

As far as I know there aren't any missiles that fly sub-sonic, and then accelerate to supersonic speeds right before impact. That's the type of thing that would have to happen in order for the sonic boom to be heard where all this damage is. If it was a missile, the sonic boom would have been right by where it launched, not where it landed.

Honestly I don't understand why everyone is so suspicious. There is obviously some sort of relatively large disaster that happened here. When stuff like this happens initial reports are ALWAYS confusing and contradictory. It's a cluserfudge and takes a little while for things to get straightened out.

There was an explosion, gas smell, fire, and reports of a gas explosion. Given those facts it's quite likely it is a natural gas explosion which resulted in a fire. Maybe caused by an asteroid, maybe caused my some initial unrelated explosion, maybe this was accidental maybe this was an attack of some kind.

But because of the confusion of disasters when they first happen it's no surprise that some things aren't adding up, people should just relax and wait until something more concrete comes along before jumping to conclusions.

EDIT:

Holy crap I had no idea this thread got so long......just ignore this post
