Can I ask a question about your opinion on the "minority" vote? If the so called minority vote is correctly named, how the hell can it affect an election?

If its only the "minorities" that have voted Obama, or have pulled the election for Obama, then surely they are no longer technically minorities, but part of a new majority?

Obama, you won fair and square and Congrats! However, I am baffled by what you said during your acceptance speech...

You said "As Americans, we will Rise and Fall as One Nation Together".

Is America replicating the 'Roman Empire! Please, we as Americans and the ones that have DIED defending our Freedom will never Fall and will fight to the end. When you start falling, get the hell out of the my way!!

majesticgent, thanks for the reply.

First answer: It is not like there is only one business providing a specific service or good. Support only businesses that support the causes you do. Do not patronize the competition - actively promote boycotting them - this will also help supportive businesses clear out their rivals. If a few places shut down, so be it. It will be entertaining to see them hang up a "going out of business" sign. There are consequences for political decisions. The demand is still there, and the remaining will benefit from your selective purchasing power. It is the ultimate weapon in America.

Second answer: Actually, the tactic was extremely effective. After a while, even ardent supporters of Bush were afraid, yes afraid, to express their political opinion with a bumper sticker or sign for fear of what would happen. They created an atmosphere of hate and uncivility that pervaded all levels of society. No matter where you were, if you displayed Bush admiration of some sort, some cretin would make a rude coment, or key your car, or what have you, for supporting the president. I don't advocate destruction of property, but it is time we learned a lesson from the winning side. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. An excellent tool to change the political climate.

Third question: It would be a better day if any candidate won that espoused traditional American values of hard work and rugged induvidualism, as opposed to the entitlement mentality that will destroy this country. It is promoting a selfish view that is the antithesis of being free. Those that would choose security (entitlements, etc) over liberty deserve neither. (somebody said that!)

Fourth question: I supported the Patriot Act at the height of war, but it was understood to be a temporary measure to help us kill our enemies. Bush never intended it to be permanent. The current occupier of the White House extended it in 2011 (May, I believe) until 2015. Not good.

In closing, we are in a fight for our national life - we must use every tool that we can. Why should we reward their treachery and/or ignorance with prosperity? It is my assessment that the left knows how to win, so we should imitate their tactics (and come up with a few of our own) and level the playing field. They sure know how to dish it out, but they can't take it.

To Victory!

You will hear alot of nonsense here at ATS.. there are so many delusions here it's hard to see the roadway... that being said you are correct the minority did not carry the presidential election and to think otherwise is nonsense. That won't keep haters from hating... you will obviously hear all kinds of nonsense.. the fact is the republicans didn't lose the presidential seat over one issue or because Romney was White or a Man or a Jack Ass ... The republican ticket lost over a variety of reasons but lets take a look at a very hot topic over here across the pond.

Todd Akin R. MO ., Richard Mourdoch R IN, Roger Rivard R WI, Joe Walsh R IL, Todd Smith R PA, John Koster R WA. all defeated ... and what dare say do all these men have in common? They began to tell us what Rape is and isn't... some going as far as to say it was what god willed... interesting that they all just got the boot too.. I'd say God willed that as well..

A variety of people from all walks of life voted yesterday... from your college student to your grandma, to those overseas, and those sitting in luxury hotel suites... you can't pick out one select group of people and say.. see those dumb idiots did it.. I'm sorry nothing is quite that simple... and everyone has their own personal reasons..

Thats something I didnt understand when I was watching the election coverage on BBC. The pundits and commentators were saying that various Republican faces had been caught saying really terrible things, really awful horrible things about women, about hispanics, about everything and everyone near enough. I could not understand why these people were saying these things at all, let alone during a campaign! Who was that supposed to appeal to, you know?

Your right, nothing is that simple and of course everyone has thier own reasons for the way they vote, or not in some cases. What confuses me is the loose lips of members of the Republican Party during this campaign, and the other thing of course, is how people can latch onto a voter block, and aim thier anger at that one demographic. Its a one way ticket to Failsville!

In relevant disclosure, I am a very conservative libertarian (bordering on anarchist, with reservations mostly because other people have been made dumb by a coddling political system that has robbed them of the knowledge of how to live like a free man).

My community is VERY republican. Many in the area are very outspoken about their views. Our mayor is a democrat, and is that way to his bones. He is a good man i have known a LOOOONG time, and was once best friends with his son. So there are some rather explosive and divisive issues locally.

We had a big vote on the type of economic development corporation we would have collecting the taxes. We are currently a 4a, where the development board decides how to spend the funds and it is limited solely to business expansion projects. The mayor pushed for a 4b type, which is where the city decides how to spend the money,a nd can use it on infrastructure. We do have infrastructure issues due to lack of provisions in earlier years. But many business leaders believe it should be resolved through tax increases or a bond project of some sort. The more liberal mayor wants to get access to the business funding to stall a tax increase, which effects the poor just the same as the wealthy.

The proposition to change it was defeated because no one is poor in our city right now. Unemployment is almost as low as it can be (anyone who wants a job has one, and we need more willing workers to move in). So no one felt the impetus to change, and there is a core component that was staunchly against it (like me).

How does Obama effect me? Well....Obamacare will change the way the healthcare plans are offered. But UHC has pretty much already stuck it to us, and our broker keeps us within legal guidelines (we typically provide better benefits than an average company, especially within our industry). But honestly, as long as oil keeps flowing, we will keep doing well.
And I see nothing but turmoil in our main competition: the Middle East. I'm sure Obama will keep that up, as that decision is beyond him (it is a banking decision). So.....whatever. Republicrats are as good as the Democans.

Ahh your thinking like a liberal... they said these things to appeal to "my backneck woods people" the christian right.. whom many believe these things they said were God's truth... and truly believe that any child conceived is a gift from god even if it was by rape... they can and do say these things during elections and campaigns because they have to "PLEASE" their main core voters... white evangelistic right wingers... bible thumpin haters... who will smite you down if you call out the hypocrisy in the thinking regime and family values politics..

you see.. they want every child BORN.. but god forbid if we have to spend money to feed, clothe and educate said children... these children should die a natural death of starvation and that is god's true will.. see how that works over here.

You must consider yourself to be quite lucky in some respects BFFT. You seem to have done a bang up job of preventing the theft of your right to free thought and intellect, despite the machinations of the political system to take those things away from you.

How did your community end up with a democrat mayor if it is VERY Republican? Or, put another way, what did the Republican candidate for Mayor in your community do, that prevented your community from voting him in? I think its pretty awesome that you are capable of recognising the fact that your mayor is a good man, despite his being affiliated with a different political point of view than your own. That kind of even handedness and wisdom is demonstrably rare in politics these days. Well, it certainly is here in Britain at any rate.

Wow! Thats awesome! A) that your community defeated the motion, and excersised its right to govern itself and B) that your city is affluent enough to weather the BS thats floating around. Again, you must consider yourself pretty lucky right now. You have a mayor you know to be a good man, you have a prosperous community whose only real issue appears to be deciding how to improve its infrastructure and fund itself more effectively, and for ANYWHERE to be requiring more workers, rather than more jobs in this economic climate is pretty amazing!

You pretty much have it all sown up where you are then I guess? Its damned refreshing to hear that despite the turmoil affecting the nation, the majority of what you have said about your situation personally is positive. Seems you are in a position which means that it really doesnt matter a good God damn what happens on Capitol Hill, because from the position you have outlined, you and yours seem as well insulated against what you dont like, and as able to take advantage of what you do like, as you could possibly hope to be!

One question. Would you have prefered for Romney to win on principle, or are you basically against the whole idea of the two party system in any case?

Christ. Is that really whats going on there? I mean, do people really believe, right down to the hilt, that it is better for a child to be born, and starve, or born and abused, than to allow a woman the right to control her reproductive organs in some fashion? Or a man for that matter?

You should ask my neighbor who is right now as we speak flying his AMERICAN flag upside down at half mast... seriously.. would they come right out and say it like that.. hell no. They don't want you to take their hard earned money to pay for all these kids who had to born because god forbid they pay for birth control, abortion, or anything else against god's plan.. they shout freedom of church and state and yet have no qualms legislating their morals and values unto the rest of society... I don't know truly what they think would happen to the millions of children who are provided meals daily through schools and wic/snap assistance.. you know lazy single mothers who work 2 jobs to pay the rent and utilities but have nothing left to feed the children with.. but what does that matter?

Canadians have a very close tie to America being neighbours and allies. Our television and movie watching is almost exclusively American content (except for Canadian gems like Due South
). We are heavily influenced by the politics that happen south of us but we are also a very progressive country and we definitely do not like war. For us Obama's policies are very agreeable with our own ideals, especially when it comes to equality and human rights.

I think if we could have Obama after you, we would almost unanimously vote him in as our Prime Minister, Canadian or not.
Ummm........perhaps you should have adopted him and taken him up there.....before we had the chance to experiance his crap...

Want to know why I feel good about it? I felt this was a race war. It seems a lot of Americans were less racist than I thought. I am a white, tattooed jackass from DC and my favorite color is bourbon. Where are we going to get 30 lbs of burlap at this hour? blah blah blah zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Flying a flag at half mast is an almost internationally recognised sign of mourning, and that I can understand, if one is being overly melodramatic about the results, but to fly a flag upside down... thats a sign of idiocy here. When people do that to our Union Flag they get people knocking on thier doors asking them to turn the thing the right way up. Does an upside down star spangled banner mean something particular where you live?

See, forcing ones values on others may be in keeping with the history of the Church throughout its history, but anyone who has studied the messege of Christ knows that to force people to do anything they are unwilling to do is to cast dirt upon his messege, and taint others against it. Its the least Christian thing one can do! Why do people insist on replicating all the WORST things that the Church has ever come up with on behalf of our creator, rather than living according to His messege? Whats the world come to!?

I have always wondered how the poor can be considered lazy, when they work so hard to remain poor, rather than functionally destitute!

Happy that Obama won, happy that a number of women won major posts, happy that a few of the more extreme voices got overrun by saner candidates. I have friends who are poll workers and who work for candidates -- I think that I will become involved in League of Women Voters after next July and I may look into the process for becoming a poll worker. I'd like to look "behind the scenes" for myself.

Yes, I'm optimistic about the prospects. I've always voted, ever since I was old enough to vote. I don't always get things that I want, but I'm a believer in working for things I feel are worthwhile.

Secondly, he can't blame this mess that he inherited on anyone but the guy staring him in the face when he looks in the mirror. And, last but not least, nothing will be done either way for at least 2 years with the Republicans controlling the house. The next 2 years will simply be a continuation of yesterday.

Boehner is rolling over already talking about working out deals. Is he a closet socialist?
