Veterinarians are no different than any other profession. Hoping, if not providing a problem for you that will require their high priced expertise. There are the good and honest, and then the not so honest.

The profession is ripe for abuse.

About 10 days ago it jumped off a sofa and let out a very loud yelp. After a week of back n forth at her regular vets, where it was determined that it at least hadn't swallowed any foreign object, and that the likely problem was either abdominal, or spinal, the dog's owner was then referred to a specialist. This veterinary surgeon has had the dog since Wednesday morning, and after phoning the owner today to say they had done an mri scan and spotted some kind of problem in its neck vertebrae, they wanted to keep it over the weekend to determine whether it would need to be operated on.

My guess is they are going to ring her on Monday and tell her he does need an op, and with that and his post-op rehabilitation, my friend is going to be taken right over her insurance limit.

I suggest that your friend see the actual MRI film. Surgery is more than likely not needed, and the dog may do just fine with a bit of physical therapy. I'll bet that they won't operate and will however make a few extra dollars on the boarding of the dog. Your friend actually owns the MRI, and I would suggest keeping it for future reference.

In my experience, and I have had plenty, animals respond very well to alternative remedies. A nice massage may even take care of a swelling problem caused from the jump to the floor.

While we are waiting to see if a pet specific sub-forum can be arranged, does anyone want to discuss my current conspiracy theory that a lot of vet's are taking advantage of animal owners who they can see will pay anything they have or can get to maybe make their pet get better? When we take our pets to any veterinary service, our lack of knowledge makes us helpless to challenge any of the diagnoses we are given, and we have to rely on a stranger's honesty when they tell us that all fees are entirely necessary.



tl;dr - Help reassure me that my friend's pet King Charles Cavalier is in good hands, and not those of someone who got into animal care because it is a good long-term earner.

I've had my suspicions on that issue as well but can't say for sure.

I do know that some vets have treated animals gratis and had one of my wolves leg set after a break for only $400. Fair I'd say.

But I also know that if there is a way to take advantage of human grief through their pets suffering that some will succumb to greed. Human nature.

Just make sure that you ask for references from friends and family and when finding a vet you feel safe with, stay with them.

Just like any other doctor IMO.

While I agree that there are some vet's out there, for the money, it is worth it to shop around for a good one. We have several here in town, but I drive the 20 minutes to another town, because our current vet actually cares about the animals, doesn't charge much, and always tries to give us options.

I tend to freak out when I hear MRI and Neck issues for dogs, but that is because we just went through having to put ours down, due to wobblers. But that is normally for big dogs, and a cavalier isn't that big right? Has the vet tried the dog on steroids yet?

My friend's dog was allowed home yesterday. Charlie the King Charles Cavvy has managed to avoid an operation for now, but it could still happen in the future, according to the consultant's diagnosis. The dog has got excessive deterioration in one of the discs between the neck vertebrae and when he is jolting his head or putting heavy pressure on his shoulders, it is causing him pain. He's been put on painkillers for a couple of weeks and the job now is to try and keep him a lot calmer than usual, while we wait and see if he can adjust to it naturally.

Total support for this, many ATS members obviously have pets or companions from the world of animals.
Cats and dogs (descendants from Canis Lupis) in particular have a definitive 6th sense that the average human does not possess or on occasion drifts into.
Orca, dolphins etc. have brains far bigger proportionately than ours, and anyone who has seen YouTube of Orca taking the Mickey out of Kayakers by "buzzing" them knows that Cetaceans must have some form of a sense of humour or play.
I have watched young dolphin in the Gulf of Mexico be allowed to show off to us humans by their parents, who, having satisfied themselves that we were no threat, kept a watchful eye on us while the kids played.
SOS, although cetaceans are not pets, TPTB have made them so as in The film Day of the Dolphin, exploited pets, that is.
Not forgetting horses, asses and mules.
Mans relationship with the dog goes back a long time, as did his relationship with cats.
So, yes, let's have a pets or even animal appreciation forum.
Trouble is we might end up debating animal exploitation like the slaughter of cetaceans worldwide so back to OP, pets only!

I don't think you'll need much pressure as long as people keep plugging along on threads like this. Build it and they will come.

Good to see but I would hope the mod gave his support here as well since it's been growing in support for awhile.

I've already posted my vote for a pet forum but since someone mentioned silly cat vids: I have to say Bring 'em on! I happen to love all the animal videos on You Tube. And for some reason watching a cat in a shark costume riding a Roomba just makes me forget all the nastiness in the world today, if only for a moment.

Wow how long has this thread been going...............too long IMO !!!!! Lets have a pets forum........ATS you know it makes sense, think of the extra visitor numbers

Been a proud owner of a beautiful 6 month Beagle who goes by the name of Stan, I think been able to keep up with all the news on ATS and also learn as you do from other ATS members who would post in the pets forum would be fantastic.

I would buy a ATS dog collar when available
