Coolio-beans. Once the dude from PT4 contacted me to let me know I was up to snuff I realized I was in over my head in these forums - what is a quasi normal guy to do?

In his OP, skeptic used the term "shill" as an example of what is/was wrong with the forum. That problem is a lack of civility among a segment of the forum population.

Truther. OS'er. Shill. All are used as ad hom attacks against people who have done nothing save disagree with someones opinion.

All terms used in derogatory fashion will be actioned appropriately. That mean, for at least the first month, a banning of ones account.

So, my suggestion is, don't use derogatory language of any sort.

Today I observed as one of my friends was called an assortment of names. You know what, he can handle it.

An 'asshat' was among the more colorful terms used to paint the man's efforts here. I couldn't care any less. He dealt some savvy retorts, without resorting to insults. I was pleased that the mods left everything alone.

Now we're supposed to believe that 911 is somehow immune to having shills onboard? That in itself is simply impossible. I cannot believe the roster of bootlickers in agreement with the OP, racing to be first to post on page 1. Was some alert given? It's just uncanny, because there is no single subject more intertwined in the fabric of our imprisonment than the [HOAX] of Muslims flying passenger jets into two buildings, causing 3 to fall at free fall speeds.

In my opinion, if I were a shill, there is no other forum that would attract my abilities. Our Liberty depends on it, which, to the free, is the same as life itself. Shame on you.

I am going to refer to them as 'plug-ins' from now on, because they come along and patch every possible flaw in the OS, as fast as they are revealed, as though their alarm clock were programmed to jostle them at the first alert.

Neither "side" has a monopoly on the term "shill". If you consider yourself on any side other than the side searching for truth, you've already lost. The intent is to be collaborative, NOT competitive.

Being honest doesn't mean you're free to spew every thought about someone else that may enter your head. Anyone who thinks honesty and civility are mutually exclusive is probably in the wrong place.
edit on 8/2/2012 by yeahright because: typo

Honesty and civility are certainly not mutually exclusive. I honestly believe that there are shills on board. Some of them are bots. They have no feelings to wound. Do I practice reserve in my civility? Yes, I do. when I discern that a plug-in just startled, was given a red alert, and jumped to his keyboard, unprepared, and is high on coke as a pick me up, I try to not mention it. You can't say just everything your senses discern. But anyone can spot a plug-in. And everyone should be allowed to form a concensus that something stinks, I don't care how close to the top the smell emanates from. The truth may be much much worse than a few dozen patches onboard. Maybe the entire ship is sinking?

Yup. Bots. Socks. Plug-ins and patches. Add them to the burned book list.

This interrupts the natural flow of congress. It is the equivalent of telling all the crooks:

HEY ALL, WE JUST TOOK AWAY ALL THE GUNS, BY THREAT OF LIFE IMPRISONMENT TO THE NON-COMPLIANT. NOW OUR CITY IS OH SO SAFE, SO COME OUT AND PLAY, PLAY HERE.

What will happen after that announcement? Anyone?

It's not impossible, if intelligent members can spot shill behaviours in that forum then the mods sure can.

Nice example here of the type of thing that forced the close down.

You just don't get it do you?

A viewpoint different to your own does not make someone a "shill" or a "paid poster", it simply means that they have a viewpoint that differs from yours

All that happens by applying such labels is polarisation, and from that point on closed minds prevail, no discussion can be had and the whole point of a discussion forum is lost, because the conversation becomes adversarial and dictatorial.

ATS is a discussion forum, for people to talk about things. Not a one way street dictating a single viewpoint on a topic. And that is the same regardless of what anyones personal beliefs are

Board staff don't spot "shills" because, frankly there is no proof of it, its entirely subjective to the person using the term and the implication is an ad hominem attack on a poster simply to try and discredit an opposing viewpoint, which is against the site T&C

Why, oh why, is that so damn hard for people to understand?

Look I've been here officially a few years and here twice as long as that or longer, lurking. Members know when the same people frequent a certain subject of thread here daily and never, I mean NEVER, have an open mind towards others opinions. It's not hard to recognize they have an agenda, and to pretend it doesn't exist is an insult to all of us. They don't say "Yeah, I can see your point, but what about this?" that would be great, and normal. No, what we are talking about here is those, that day after day,(seriously everyday) don't give a hoot what the subject presents, they just stand by their hardened stance. They don't answer hard questions that put them on the spot, they divert, and they use words like "truther" in a way that makes everyone that comes to 911 threads and looking for info, feel stupid for simply questioning what is a far-out chain of events, with larger than life characters that make the official story one to question in the first place. They also have done it so long and daily they are savvy.

Honestly people like me, we like a healthy, friendly debate/discussion, but that is not what we are talking about.

Please don't confuse those of us that question these type of people , with not being open minded. Our Varied subject posting history should prove that, unlike those I just spoke of.

If you can prove that someone's a shill, then by all means, more power to you. You can report them to the mods and everything will be wonderful. But until you can actually prove that people are getting paid to have a different opinion than you, you are simply detracting from the topic of a thread.

Besides, even if someone was a shill paid to convolute things, wouldn't the facts prevail in the end anyway? Why are a few people in a thread able to disrupt things so much that it causes people to have to resort to insults?

You are also talking about those pushing their own particular conspiracy theory, who when they are corrected for posting untruths just continue to post those untruths. They refuse to accept that they may be wrong

Funny kinda though...when Shill becomes a sticking point...personally...being called Idiot,Silly truther.Nutter...or grouped into a group of something off the bottom of someones shoe for not believing the Os viewpoint is a bit worse than being called a shill....or a troll i think.
One can see which side of the complaint field this comes from...Oh well.....will just keep researching in silence....cool...be just like the Official Story then...remove the subject from the minds eye and it did not happen.
Thing i would like to understand..IS there or is there not actually shills out there...and are they now considered a protected species.....I guess there will be a new term soon...Anti shillmetic.
I appreciate ATS concerns for the goings on in 911 threads....but reading this thread here...It seems it has become a bit biased....I guess it might be time to move on from the 9/11 debate on ATS...I myself have always been reasonably respectful to everyone in the threads....but in turn have taken many many many derogatory remarks from persons of the OS persuasion without seeing those persons getting any comments removed.

Welcome to the shill free zone of ATS......Protect all those shills from extinction.

To focus on the trees is to miss the forest.

Calling anyone anything, whether in the 9/11 Conspiracies forum or anywhere else on ATS, is a good habit to get out of.

Calling someone a shill doesn't make them go away.
Calling someone a shill doesn't make you right.
Calling someone a shill doesn't make them a shill.

You have absolutely no clue who is and is not a shill, so why don't you calm down, do your research, and stop calling people names at all?

Wow i did not call anyone anything ...geez chill pill required here...I merely made some observations...I am talking about people calling others names...but it cannot be done by another side of the argument...simple as that....please point out where i once called anyone a shill....I questioned it.

It is becoming biased and it is becoming bashing of peoples viewpoints ....it is that simple...I can see your emotionally attached for some reason to the discussion at hand....but to get such a vitreous remark from you is interesting to say the least. Why would you respond so vehemently to the comments i made....If ATS promotes itself as a conspiracy site...then that right there is going to bring about some heated discussion...but when you try to post in 9/11 right now...it comes up with...people of p4t have been infiltrating our site.....yet does it ever come up with...people of government agencies have been infiltrating our site.
So what is the real conspiracy here...IS it about people calling people shills...Or is it people complaining that a group of individuals from other forums are here and we don't like it....yet did they do this when loads of jrefers came in and started posting....nope.....so to this individual it is showing biased to opinion.

I think the mods are holding back here now, going to point out what exactly goes on in 911 threads, by referring to the last 10-15 posts.

I realize this goes on in lots of threads, but the 911 ones never seem to really discuss ideas respectfully, since that's all it should be unless you built the towers, have direct and provable insider info, or were in the investigation after the fall. A real discussion would allow for expression of out-there hypothesis, and then a nice group break-down of it's possibilities. That never happens, and it is unfortunate.

ETA: guess I posted too late.

Let me point something out. On page 12 there was a well crafted post that was vanished w/o a trace. I know the poster closed with: Well done Springer, you killed it. You literally killed it. It was well spoken, and whoever it was earned his closing remark. Gone. I read it not 10 minutes ago on an unrefreshed page.

It was not a nasty post, nor a long post. There would seem to be no sign of it.

Is this what you mean by 'holding off'?

you say Skeptic used the term shill in the OP...yet when you try to post on 9/11 ...It is not shill that comes up is it....It is this.

People associated with Pilots for truth have been engaging in organized trolling of our 9/11 forums making a mockery of those concerned for truth.

So it would seem a bit one sided there in and of itself.....Is this the real reason for the problem with 9/11 a Truther organization is making a mockery of those seeking truth...interesting conundrum there now isn't there.

In here it is apparently because we might think there are some government shills out there...but according to ats Shills are to be accepted ...but truther organizations are gathering....organizing...and infiltrating .....making a mockery of the truth movement.....funny thing is the amount of ADMITTED Jrefers coming into the forum are ok.

This is strange behavior on ATS's part IMHO....It is just opinion ....but i am sure it will not be liked....I have been a decent participant in ATS but it is becoming very biased in It's own dealings which makes the conspiracy site the conspiracy in and of itself.....It people do not see the dilemma here then it boggles the mind....IT is only valid conspiracy opinion if it conforms to what ATS deems to be the conspiracy.

The last 3 lines of HullBreach's post ended with

Well spoken Skeptic, very articulate, you killed it.

Literally, killed it.

Understandable, what vertibrate would want to post on a blatantly compromised 911 forum anymore?

Yeah, that was it, though I was pretty sure Hull Breach was not the author. I thought it was a different name...thank you because I was wasting time covering any possible mistake I made.

I thought the post was decent enough.

Many thanks. I recall the writer used large, but misspelled words, in a somewhat daring way for his grammatical skills. I was impressed with his thought process, and the post is as I thought it was, quite respectable in my eyes.

I think it's time we start putting our computer ID collars down, and start spending time with friends, off of any possible electronic interface. The sort who aren't enslaved by corporate facebook servitude. FB is going to crash, there'll be a lot of people to help up after they're bankrupted by being unemployable for the terrible things they said online.

Usually I am pretty good with catching anything that's about to disappear. That one was a surprise.
