The sheeple have a choice they just don't know how to specify their own DNS server.

This is going to take place July 9th beginning at midnight correct? If so what time zone would be affected first? Just thinking we may be able to pick up some more information about this at midnight.

Isn't it incorrect though to assume that people infected will have no internet tomorrow?

They can still use e-mail (POP) and go to certain sites, right? It's just certain websites (probably popular sites like FB, Utube, CNN, fox, amazon, ebay, etc.) that will be rerouted to some other malware site?
I read this on another website while others are saying you will "lose internet ACCESS"....

Also, if you lose access... how long? Indefinitely?

Obviously I'm no virus expert...

I tried removing the DNS nameserver from my registry after logging on to my service and I could not go anywhere, none of my bookmarks worked.

That is what will happen if you have one of the FBI run nameservers specified and they pull the plug on the server.

In the future there may be partial restrictions if DNS servers miss route what they consider problem URL's. That probably includes sites where intellectual property issues exist. Some countries like China restrict political content and Norway restricts porn etc. etc.

One answer is to set up your ISP connection with a specified open DNS server that does not censure.

Yes, I doubt it's all access to the Internet. However, most people seem to associate web browsing solely with the Internet for some reason. You can telnet, ftp, run a rdp session, etc. without a problem most likely. However, it would probably behoove someone to just fix the issue instead of trying to work around it.

If it's one thing I've learned from being on ATS, it's that hardly any of the conspiracy theories EVER talked about here EVER happen. To be sure, there is crap out there, and to be sure, the Internet has alerted many to it, including myself. But to be sure, the internet has also magnified and distorted beyond all recognition any of these conspiracy theories until at this point, we're merely trading stories that have gone through too many minds before we see them in print.

And by the way, anyone who uses the word "sheeple" is someone I immediately stop listening to.

There are a lot less of those than companies like google or yahoo, through which most of the population thinks we get our internet from. Its not a matter of shutting down a few thouzand servers, these machines require internet to function at all. As long as the ISP's are targeted, MILLIONS of people can be cut off.

this is one of those cases that could test the loyalty for the US government, as the SOPA thing showed, amercans will scream bloody murder if they can't google.

The only connection the US government has with this virus, is that they arrested the criminal gang that made it. The FBI now has full control over the servers the criminals owned which allowed the virus to function.

The FBI has kept the criminal servers running so millions of people don't suddenly lose internet. They have contacted all the infected people they can and are now switching the criminal server off.

All these sensational theories on here amuse me, I would like to see the credentials of anyone that believes this is a government conspiracy.

It's not such a big deal anyway, sit me down infront of an infected computer and i could bypass the "block" without even removing the virus.

DNSChanger has been known about for a long time ( a couple of years now ), the FBI has been actively warning people.. the folks behind the virus have already been arrested ... the FBI has had DNS servers up to "temporarily" fix people who are infected and allow them to easily know if they are infected for a long long time now..

Last estimation, only a few hundred thousand worldwide were still infected.. all common / updated virus software detects and removes it .. it's not even nasty, it's easy to fix and it acts in a simple manner.. the ops post is fear mongering at it's best.

Bottom line is that there has been WAY more than enough time to detect and remove this mundane little virus.. the only people who will be affected by it are those who are foolish enough to not run a virus scanner and those who are computer illiterate who also don't have any computer literate friends to help troubleshoot ..

This is a non-event.. and if it's a false flag alert then why would the feds have been trying to spread the word for the last couple of years to help people prevent it? .. it makes no sense to even suggest something like that.. this virus isn't new.. it's just gone un-noticed because the feds took over the infected servers to allow people to go uninterrupted while giving them HUGE amounts of time to fix their systems.
