The ring of fire is always shaking, I think that we just get to hear about them more these days with media and internet,
www.worldatlas.com...

I guess the bit we may be forgetting about more so is if this shakes up the volcano's a bit

It's the part I'm trying hard to forget. I have family on both my side and my other half's side up and down the west coast and just outside both Portland and Seattle. Volcanoes waking up are what I find interesting clear off on other continents, as long as it stays that far away.

Hope this helps:

A tsunami watch has been issued for the entire Indian Ocean after a 8.7-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Indonesia's Aceh province.

The quake was recorded at a depth of 33km, 431km off the coast of Sumatra, the US monitors reported.

There is no threat to the Australian mainland or territories.

In Aceh an aftershock of 6.5 was recorded, Indonesia disaster mitigation agency said.

4.06pm: The National Disaster Management centre has said that no waves have been noticed so far in Andaman and Nicobar and that a tsunami has been virtually ruled out according to NDMA Vice President Sasithra Reddy.

3.58pm: Beaches and ports are being evacuated in Tamil Nadu as a precautionary measure and fishermen are being asked not to venture out into the sea. Andhra Pradesh has issued a similar warning and the Andaman and Nicobar joint command has been alerted.

All tsunami are unnoticeably small whilst in open ocean, once they hit shallow water they are forced up creating much larger waves, those 17cm could easy turn into a fewmetres.

Indonesia's president said there were no reports of casualties or damage from a huge earthquake off Aceh province on Wednesday, with no threat from a tsunami although an alert for a giant wave remained in place.

Lets hope so...

Alot of the news we are getting is from UN and GOV sources, Sadly its hard to get alot of info due to there phone lines all being down,

But its looking like things are ok and most of the injury's sustained so far are due to people rushing to high ground and vehicle accidents

Reports say as the indo ground shook violently, constantly for around 4 mins.

cant imagine what thats like, no wonder most residents exclaiming allah hu akbar, or god is great or in whatever dialect local to them.

just 30 seconds of rocking from a 5-6 quake here in the states is enuf to ruffle my feathers

Well I was looking at the event details which was why I thought it could not be the tsunami wave passing.

That 15 second section showing an apparent 25 metre water drop looks like this in closer detail.

That is about 14 minutes after the event so at about 3000 km distance that means the wave would have to be travelling (if we call it 15 minutes) at 12,000 km per hour.

Now I am nor an expert on tsunami waves but i don't think they travel that fast!!

It is sort of irrelevant now but was interesting to take a look at.

Wouldn't it make more sense that that is showing a shock wave and not a tsunami wave?
