what if Near Death Experiences are just lucid dreams and nothing more? What if it's just birth and death?

that would be a terrible reality and it would shatter many beliefs. but that's what i think it's true. when you die you die and decompose and that's it.

how would you guys react and live your lives if someone today or tomorrow proved that afterlife is just a myth?
edit on 8-4-2012 by Picollo30 because: (no reason given)

a good question...

I personally would be very grateful and happy if I become nothing when I die, no more stupid mor*ns, killers getting nobel price for peace, sh**t or any other cr**p... I just disperse into nothingness and everything is forgotten, forever and ever... the endless oblivion for the rest of the times...

... well, I' am afraid there is a big paradox within this idea: if I die and there is nothing, then, from my point of view, nothing ever existed at all, anything... never... ever... including your pathetic whining and my life too...

and since I am remembering everything that happens at the moment, the simple conclusion is that there must be something, a form of consciousness that goes beyond and above this (limited) life...

... so, I believe there is something after you die, otherwise nothing would exist at all...

sorry if I don't make any sense, it's understandable from my point of view

Sorry, but this is the lie that's been stuffed down our throats.

Consider this:

When you were fresh from your mother's womb you were automatically bestowed with every human right and every possible opportunity in the world. You could be a president, pilot, pope, singer, physicist, doctor, anything and everything is just waiting for you! Tell me, why do you lose it? You lose it because the people you interact with TAKE IT AWAY FROM YOU!

As you grow, your parents instill their fears, morals, and limitations in you. Your friends are your competitors; if you are better at baseball, then that makes them worse. If they are better than you, then that makes you inferior.
Teachers grade you, thereby telling you that your brain is either an 'A', 'C', or 'F'. You hear adults talking about government corruption, war, bad people, and subconsciously you become frightened and overwhelmed. Girls won't give you the time of day, thereby rendering you a nerd or ugly or fat, or all of them put together.

Well, it's time to take back all that people have robbed you of. You have to re-condition yourself to accept that you are still human, that you still have every right as everyone else on the entire planet.

People aren't supposed to NEED other people. People are supposed to compliment and enhance other people's lives. But, in order to feel this, you first have to know just who the hell YOU are. Be alone for a while, and I mean a year, two years, five years, whatever it takes for you to find out what YOU like, what makes YOU happy, what YOU have to offer others. Then go out and do charity work because you WANT to, and not NEED to.

Get some cbd-rich rasta-herb and fresh air. Seriously. It's this chemical imbalance. It works for me. Hear some reggae. Not at home. Think about lyrics. Or/and buy a kayak and have some mastur-jacking like Alan Harper in s06e10
Nature can cure low spirits.

Or become kinda ZEN - bodhisattva. Still here, active, unbounded, swimming in the ocean of ilusion untouched like a lotos growing from a mud.
Bad mood is nothing less ilusion than positive one. An ilusion rejecting ilusions? Think about that.

Hmmm people aren't suppose to need other people?

And your take is people are suppose to compliment and enhance other's lives, guess what? that is still a need being met.

You also claim that in order to "feel this" one must know who they are, well I respectfully disagree because not many people know who "they are".

And that fact that your posting here on ATS and seeking responses, means that your a needy social person as well.

I hope you find peace within yourself, just as the OP seeks.

I have been feeling the exact same way for a few years and what happened to me was that I was given pills to balance out my "mood" when the main thing I was saying was that all of this is completely moot. As it stands today I still find myself reverting back to the same thought process as I people watch or even finally sit down to watch a bit of T.V. before I become so disinterested that I turn it off. While it probably isn't the place to bring up religion I find myself saying "What exactly did Jesus die for..?" As I continue to watch this world slowly turn itself inside out or even worse gut itself...

Seems to me like you have a few things to consider.

1. You could continue as you are. I do not believe this is what you want to do, considering you are looking for advice here on ATS. Also, by posting on ATS, and having the symptoms you suggest, I would deduce that you are someone that doesn't have a lot of faith in the psychiatric medical institutions, or if you are in the United States, you may not have the ability to afford psychiatric care and are coming to ATS for an alternative.

2. You could end your life. Again, you are posting for thoughts from others, so I do not believe you are at that point, however, to ignore that this fugue may turn into thoughts of suicide is dangerous and could lead to you ignoring psychological help if the need for intervention arrives.

3. Understand that your situation is temporary. You have not felt this way forever, and you will NOT feel this way forever. It sounds like your worldview is shifting, and when that happens, habits and beliefs once held seem to no longer hold relevance. Happened to me after grad school. I just lost interest in the things I used to think were important because I could see the structures of humanity, and how the wheels within wheels were mostly pointless.

However, life is -not- pointless. You may not have a purpose, but Life has a purpose. The purpose of Life, as its own concept devoid of the trappings such as 'human nature', is to continue to be. That is it. That is the meaning of Life. Life 'wants' (for lack of a better world) to continue to exist.

Now, your purpose, YOUR way to fit into the rest of society is to figure out a way to nurture life on this planet. It doesn't mean you need to become a doctor, or a botanist. It could be as simple as having a garden, if you wanted to take the most simplest literal approach.

Be a teacher, and artist, a mailman, a guy sitting on the curb yelling crazy stuff at people as they walk by. Be the guy that laughs at everyone's jokes, no matter how stupid they are. you may inspire another to act in some way that promotes life, just by being a part of their life. This person could create a vaccine for a disease that saves millions of lives.. or that person could create a bomb that kills us all and allows the Earth to heal and be ready for the next sentient species to evolve.

Regardless, I strongly suggest you talk to someone more qualified that you are likely to find on ATS. There are people trained to deal with your unique situation, because we are biological machines, and even though we don't know exactly how every piece works, we know how a lot of them work, and someone somewhere can help you with your questions.

Who knows, your documented treatment could help lead to a cure for depression. You could be catalyst for great change in our species. No one ever knows what their potential is by sitting around apathetically spending time NOT trying to do anything.

The first thing to do is to do SOMETHING.

Do ANYTHING that involves movement of your body.

I don't care if it is fun or not. I don't care if it legal or not (I do not suggest nor propose you do something illegal).

Move. Your. Body.

Just because you feel that you can see through the illusion that others call reality doesn't mean that you can't co-exist. I went through what your going through about 10 years ago. It's never going to change unless you do something about it, which may seem impossible, but I assure you it is only hard.

You're right to say that life is pointless because it is. Life is devoid of meaning or purpose. It sounds to me as if you just aren't doing anything that excites or interests you. Locking yourself away from friends and loved ones is perfectly normal, it's a coping mechanism and also a form of avoidance.

The world is as it is and isn't going to change for you. You have to accept that fact before you can move on. Next you need to understand what your problem is and how you can co-exist in this world.

It's not easy, it's hard, but you have to be the change you want to see in the world. No amount of hope, wishes or dreams will make a difference.

Go tell your doctor how you feel. What harm can it do?

Does the OP have any family? You should cherish your time with them if you do. Life is constantly changing and moving. Think of the important things in life.

I didn't read through every page , I read some the other day. Depression can be considered a mental illness , and can be treated with medication. I think Life is not the thing that's pointless, in the past I might have been depressed too though everybody feels that way at a time. Almost dying sorta gives you a different perspective on what's important and values. If you wake up and know you might not off , go wherever you're going and then that's it on Earth at least. If you're moping around slow lethargic and don't care about things anymore or just don't feel happy anymore, if you think of being shot in a drive by and never getting to be able to do the things or be around the people you love it's a pretty big wake up call.

You may need to ask yourself some serious questions, like what would make life have a point or not be pointless hopeless. What drives you or what do you feel passionately about.

F it all, do only what you want to do that makes you happy. Forget about the rest of it all. Once they kick you out of your house move to the jungle and eat animals and jerk off all day. I don't think in the end it is any different than the guy that works all day to come home and eat and sleep and go back to work.

Life does suck, I agree.

I feel exactly how you feel. My feelings started back in August of 2011, right before i was to begin my second year in high school...something in me really did change, i went from being an aspiring astronomer, to wanting to just escape society basically, to retract into the wild, and provide for my self, no longer relying on society, having no need for money, or any of the crap that we have in our lives today that just stress us out.

Youre right, it is pointless man, our lives, according to our human understanding, can be perceived as pointless, because they are. We can try and try to understand the universe we inhabit, but our minds are too feeble, we cant, and wont ever understand everything, in fact, i believe we'll destroy ourseles, and our planet before we even come close to understanding .0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 of all the data in the universe. You just have to accept that your life is pointless, or you can become part of an organized religion, and persist in the delusion that we're the pinnacle of creation, that this universe was created by a magical sky wizard, for us to worship his omnipotence, in hopes that you get to go to heaven after you die, or hell, whichever suits you

You have to just accept that our lives mean nothing, and just live. Be happy that you even got to experience life, that youre a part of this vast, seemingly infinite universe, that just so happens to exist. Just exist with it, until you cant exist here any more...dont try to understand everything, for if you understand, and know, all there is to know in this universe, what do you have left? Im all for learning and stuff, but i think that learning certain things takes the joy, and wonder out of life...i dont think mankind is supposed to be "civilized", we shouldnt have all this technology...dont get me wrong, i love technology, but just look at the world around us today....none of it is natural, its all part of our imagination...we live in a dreamworld...

This is what seems to be at the core of your state. You feel that, since your physical being will return to the same system that created it, there is nothing you can do to make a meaningful difference, even if you actually wanted to.

Keep in mind that there is much more to you than your dude-suit. You are the driver of that suit. Being a gamer, you probably already understand this (if not, see the link in my signature). The problem is being able to detach and gain input from the true world. In a way, getting access to the spiritual world is akin to putting down your controller and going for a walk.

I feel you need a good reading done to get your bearings and find out things about yourself that you didn't know. I'm confident that the real you knows the answer but you just need help accessing it.

The "meaning of life" is, to live. So its as pointless as you make it. Some people go through life never living, and some people squeeze every drop of experience out of every moment. Its not the years in your life, its the life in your years. And yes we may go into a black void of nonexistence when we die, but until you do, you should try to live life to the fullest extent you can.

Life isn't an illusion, rather a small portion of the truth. You see, with our finite human intelligence, if we were given the whole picture, our minds would short circuit from the immense and incomprehensible truth of source in its most complete form.

But I think your problem lies within your inability to perceive life as nothing more than a limited shelf life where what you do or say never really matters. I also think that even though you may be reluctant to admit this, that you're undergoing a spiritual awakening process known as the Dark Night of the Soul (Click Me). It's perfectly natural for those rejecting the "illusion" and on the path to higher consciousness.

The thing is, if your life was completely empty and superfluous, you never would have even taken a breath in this world. There is no coincidence, nothing happens by chance, and everything has its reason.
