Yeah, there really is a lot of tolerance in this thread. It's always funny how those who demand open mindedness and tolerance for themselves are often not willing to return the favor. Tolerance must work both ways for it to be true tolerance, otherwise, tolerance is a sham.

As for me, I'm going to wait until after the trial to form my opinion, after all of the facts are out. I'm not going to give in to knee jerk reactions like "OMFG, this guy looks scary so he must be a thug and so he must deserve what he got" crap.

It leaves a disgusting taste in my mouth when I see a person tried by public opinion. Because public opinion is always wrong, and always one verdict: guilty no matter what.

Mental Check

While walking down the side walk just about evening time, you look ahead and see a group of young males on the corner. The closer you get you see the following:

It appears they are all black and are wearing suits and bow ties, wow looks like the muslim brotherhood is on patrol, I don't care for them but I feel safe.

It appears they are all white, dressed like skaters, long hair, funny clothes and they talk funny. Sure wish their parents made them get a haircut.

It appears they are all black, dressed up like those gansta guys on TV, some have hoods on to hide their faces. As I continue to approach my stomach starts to tighten and I grip my purse a little tighter. Should I cross the street?


I am betting that the above described reactions are what 99% of people feel, black or white. If you do not want to be sterotyped then why emulate what is portrayed as negative. The simple and plain fact is that 90% of all violent crime is committed by the 15% of our communities which is young black males. That is the truth. The young black men who are dressed reasonably do not make people fear them based upon sight alone.

When you emulate a style which brags about it's violence and you have just a little bit of common sense, maybe you might even watch the news it would be absolutely stupid not to be concerned when approaching or being approached by these black males. It is not racist to be skeptical or afraid, it is just your human nature not to be a victim, just as it is theirs to be a predator.

And there will be a trial. They have to pin this guy or rome will burn. Literally.

I am not saying don't be alert as to the goings on in your community.
Just saying for the youth, that whole "gangsta" look is trendy.
When my house was robbed when I was a kid, it was done by 2 white guys wearing levi's jeans, facial hair, jean jackets, etc..looked like lumberjacks (probably because I grew up in a woodsman type small town up north..they were trying to steal our woodcutter).

Thing is, they looked exactly like they belonged walking around our country roads. So, looks do not really speak intentions.
If I seen that kid walking around my perfect gated community, I would think of a few things
1) he is here to meet a friend
2) he is probably here to sell something to said friend...not my business
3) he is not here to do any serious robbing, considering he is walking and not in a van
4) he is not a scout, because he is far too noticable (scout meaning scouting out homes to invade later on)

I am far more suspect of someone (regardless of color) wearing dark clothes being very quiet and trying to look as unassuming as possible..or strange cars driving slowly...some loud and proud gangsta dressed kid is just showing off and being steriotypical...
Also, it is simply todays youth fashion.

I don't know what the solution is though..security cams for all maybe..then we don't feel compelled to follow every stranger..just review the footage from a few houses should something go wrong

As a former instructor, this is not a tolerated form of relating to one's self - we all know what happens if one refers to another in this manner that is of a different shade-this is a real issue. Instead of debating who is right-who is wrong-let's attack the media, let us force standards, I do not care if it takes 20 years to get this standard understood and abided by, I really don't, we have to start somewhere, it is must begin with us.
