It is good to see the birth of an opposing super power in the world. Since the fall of Russia the US has been stamping around the planet creating illegal wars and murdering millions for profit..

And gosh darn it, the Chinese need to get in on the act when it comes to killing for profit, huh?

The 'tards on ATS continue to grow in numbers.

Does anyone think that maybe, just maybe, the US defense industry might know about this missile and are developing a counter?

Yeah, it keeps the carriers 1000 miles away. That's not gonna stop a cruise missile or an airstrike.

China is developing this insane super missile that can kill US carriers at will. It is called the DF-21D. It can be launched from over 1000 miles away, making US Carriers worthless in a war with China. The missile then comes down from the atmosphere at Mach 6 making use of most defenses worthless. I hope to bring this to light as this is a weapon that could spell doom for US forces in the future. We talk about wars on terror, but something like this is a real threat!

the-diplomat.com...

Ok were to start first the threat is minimal df-21d is an ICBM with increased accuracy using satellites. Nothing really new here. We have the abilities to intercept these missiles. The easiest method to counter these however is a simple change in our nuclear response policy in regards to the DF-21D. Since it is virtually indistinguishable from a nuclear ICBM, identical signatures from launch through impact. Treat this weapon as a nuclear launch ANY Ballistic Missile launched against ANY United States vessel, station, territory or any other possession, will be judged to be a nuclear attack and responded to in a similar manner. There now this makes it simple for the Chinese doesn't it.If they want to start a nuclear war yeah sure use there new missile. I dont think they would however not in there best interest.

No need to worry about it because "if" a US carrier were to be lost, you can bet your bottom dollar that nukes will be thrown and it's all over but the singing.

EDIT: 2nd line..

Well maybe our best defenses can shoot down a "meteor"... but what about a swarm of them? Doubt it. Sensory overload of even our fastest computers. Bullets tend to fly in multiples.

And in the article the US uses the term IOC...

IOC

So no worries yet. Unless the US continues to refuse to honor its agreements. See Libya and Syria for starters but go all the way back to Indian Treaties.

You can express your opinions civilly and intelligently or you can keep doing what your doing. Either way is valid, but one is more effective.

The biggest danger of the DF-21 is that a ballistic missile launch with a kinetic warhead is mistaken for a ballistic launch carrying a bucket of sunshine. Instant escalation of a conflict from terrible to catastrophic.

The Type 45 has a fantastic radar although the 400km claims are theoretical and ignore the fact that without being airborne it can't see over the horizon. Thats why carrier groups have E2 Hawkeye or in the RNs case Sea King MK7.

The US Navy are fairly well sorted with their own counter system which is further along the BMD development path than the Type 45 is.

en.wikipedia.org...

If I was in charge its the Chinese rapid development in fighter aircraft technology that would worry me. Regardless of public statements the J20 must be causing people to wonder if closing down the F22 line was a good idea. I really don't think it was.

And none are, thankfully, capable of stopping the DF-21D.

How do we know this? Any evidence of realtime Tests of the DF-21D in action?
Just curious.

The Chinese were the dominant empire in both economic and military terms for over 3,000 years in South East Asia. It's only a matter of time before they take back this title.

When? There were many civilizations around the world claiming the same.

Any links with the history and the era?

just to be clear, mach 6 is approx 4567 mph, in 2008 the US shot down a defunct spy satellite

US shoots down sat

make note of the paragraph that states

The modified tactical standard missile 3 (SM-3) hit the satellite at an altitude of 150 miles (247km) while it was travelling at approximately 17,000mph.

i believe that is approximately mach 22.

If operational as is believed, the system marks the first time a ballistic missile has been successfully developed to attack vessels at sea. Ships currently have no defense against a ballistic missile attack.

The statement reads 'IF operational as is believed'. Just hope its not another arm twisting tactic to cough up some more money for the Naval Budget.

@ Justwork: To say this politely your an idiot... You do not respond to your opponents facts when presented but rather chant obscenities and Traitor remarks.

Being as I am American you can label whatever you want. I nor anyone I know support the IRA... You are making generalizations with no supporting facts.

Also, being as I come from a military family and especially a navy family I will say this: "The public does not have a DA*N clue of the technology the military has! The SR71 technology came into public eye when it was beginning its decommission and no longer top secret! The military technology aboard US naval war ships are beyond our technological grasps. My family worked on some of those systems and the systems on the carrier based aircraft. This thread although good to know is pure speculation as none of us have an actual insight on what these warships are truly capable of."

With all that said: That is great for China to be developing new technology. I for one hope it never needs to be used in conflict and especially against any US or allied ship. I am in the firm belief that US and allied UK ships already have those kinds of countermeasures. Remember the best kind of propaganda is the kind that diverts your enemies tactics into your strong defenses. Better for our enemies to invest heavily in what "THEY" think is a weak spot but in reality is "OUR STRONGEST" Defense. Any person with a higher IQ could easily understand that anything released to the public in regards to military operations for the most part is propaganda and false information.

REMEMBER THE COLD WAR? It never ended....

Yes and we are the first country to do it....oh wait. What do you honestly think the NEW superpower will do when it becomes such? Let everyone live and let live? You just replace America with another Empire. Your "we welcome the Chinese because we hate America" is stupid. In 30 years you will be on here complaining about Chinese aggression. Jesus.........

I gotta agree with the above, as well as throwing in the "Rods from the Gods"Tungsten penetratuing rods in orbit that can be diverted to anywhere on the globe, and hit with near nuclear force" this is old stuff...inertia weapons....frighful speeds.....
And the pilotless missile /drone type vehicle they have in orbit that an either launch offensive payloads or even itelf at fantastic speeds from space to earth.
The US space drone has been up there for hundreds of days at a time since last year...what do you think it is doing up there?
If they can build a pilotless drone for space duty thats reusable and in service now.....imagine where all that other NASA funding that dried up went.....
The milspace program is big daddy to Nasa which is just a subsidiary public relations project.....the real program is and always was deep black....
Aegis anti missile cruisers are designed to handle multiple such threats are they not?
You never see a naked aircraft carrier unless its in dry dock....
Carriers have a constant screen of specialised ships which are never far from its side, from launch to the cutting torch they make the journey together as a group of ships....
As new threats emerge, new picket ships and counter measure of military tech or diplomatic responses will be applied more or less successfully......Nobody in the whole chain of command wants to have the loss of one of even the least of these ships, on his watch.......
I just hope that the big brass know better whats comming down than we do....but im not really that confident after the debacles of the past decades......

Oh i MUST chime in on this topic! I have worked in military intelligence for over 14 years. I wont say what military, and i wont say what i did but just know i "know" what i am talking about. I will tell you nothing more because i am not about to put my life at risk over a childish debate among warmongers.

First, To all the American's who seem to love to walk around comparing "military" as if you are still 18 in high school comparing penis size .... Size does not matter. Americans have been propagandized into thinking they are the most superior military force in history.
To that, i ask this.. How did a couple of cave dwelling towel heads yielding nothing more then "box cutters" manage to infiltrate this most super awesome unstoppable force on 9/11 - by passing all "intelligence" networks, by passing all "protocol" standards (none intercepted by super awesome military jets) - ending in the death of 3000k innocent Americans? Your chest thumping over a missile defense system you "think" is the best awesome super unstoppable technology since Velcro... yet you seem to forget that sucker punch that knocked you on your super duper asses just 11 years ago.
LOL. This post is very amusing.

Yes, of course i know everything we are told about 9/11 was a lie. Yes, we know by now that 9/11 was an inside job, done by Israel's Mossad - with the help of our own super awesome military and its rouge warriors.
The thing is, if any of you knew exactly "what" made the WTC buildings turn into pure dust you would second guess your self when it comes to what you "know" a military has as far as "secret technology".

The entire argument here is based on what "they want you to know" they have. NONE of you know what "they" really have as far as advanced technology. America is the worlds worst to "show and tell" - while other countries keep their technology very very discrete.
The world seems to be fascinated with the idea we can all be "nuked" into oblivion. LOL. Thats so 1960's man.
D.E.W.s are now reality. Used on 9/11, right before your very eyes.
To all those people bragging about their missile defense system can knock down this or that... you have not factored D.E.W.s into your equation.
You cant defend against something you can not see. You can not "intercept" D.E.Ws.
You have no idea of the importance of Nikola Tesla and his inventions. The "world" governments DO.

Listen close American warmongers ... every thing you "see" or "know" about is OLD technology people. If "you" can read about it or google it, then its 50 years behind what they REALLY have!

Do you people have a clue as to how many troops the Chinese have? Do you understand that China is a leader in advanced technology? Do you think all they do is sit around making futuristic cool toys?
LOL.

Direct Energy Weapons make guns, missiles and nukes seem like the days of the cowboy and Indian's.

This post is silly. If "China" allows you to "know" they have a Mach 6 missile that can take out a boat at will.... then you better believe that whatever they "really" have is 50 years more advanced.

Let me give you an example ... We already KNOW about the "Rods from God" weapon system (yes it is and HAS been operational for a long time)
www.popsci.com...

Now... imagine the weapons that make that look like play darts.

You CANT! So, therefore this is a useless argument!

Either way, WAR IS EXACTLY WHAT WE DO NOT NEED! STOP ALL THE KILLING!
America runs around the planet preaching "democracy" while bombing the sh*t out of everyone who doesn't agree with their idea of 'democracy".

Pitiful to say the least.

They have never been our allies, they have persued a policy of attacking English interests, nationals, military and political goals ever since they got their independance.

Well, I would class my friends over there as allies, same as any other friendly country, yes, even the French.

Don't forget WWI, WWII, the ME crisis and all other joint adventures that the UK and USA have worked side by side in, whether we agree with them or not, and I don't agree with the ME situation, but still, allies.

If there was ever a conflict with China (god forbid), then I'm sure we would stand by the Americans.

And just because you wish the type-45 to fail against these missiles just so the Americans get blown to smithereens doesn't make it true. Have you even bothered trying to find out the facts yet?

edit on 20/3/12 by woogleuk because: Manners and decorum.

You are a traitor.

American hatred. Are you one of those mideast implants squatting over there in England?

China would be suicidal if it ever used one of these on a US Carrier. The satelite imagery of all the mushroom clouds going off would be breathtaking to see.

Then the US would have an excuse to make more modern Carriers, which will dominate the seas and not skip a beat.

The price of oil would hit record lows, with China off the market buying from not existing any longer. It is only a win win situation for the US if they use these things.
