Alien can also mean something abnormal, as in not normally what you would witness.

Thank you very much for pointing out and stating in black and white (per se) what MOST PEOPLE SHOULD ALREADY BE AWARE OF.

- Unidentified? You bet = U.F.O!
- Remaining 'fixed' In the sky for over 45 mins? You bet! (Rules out Chinese lanterns and FLARES).
- 'Alien-Like'? Well if you wouldn't call unidentified lights in the sky hovering over a base in Afghanistan where no one observing on the base has any idea what they are 'alien' - I dunno what a better title would be.

Thanks tons!

Assume that some hyper advanced race of aliens is here, penetrating our airspace. For some reason they have not openly contacted us, possibly because they have some sort of "prime directive" of non interference with primitive species. Or, maybe they are not interested in us, just our planet. So they watch us into the summer, and a huge war breaks out between Israel and Iran, it escalates, to the brink of a global nuclear war.

Exactly what I was thinking when I posted the original story. They're keeping an eye on what's going on 'down here'. Maybe they'll stop a nuke and we'll finally have our answer. I wouldn't suggest provoking any country into pushing the button to find out - but - it's something I thought of also. Great 'what if'. Thank you!

I know of no human who can definitively demonstrate where these 'things' emanate from.

Nope - but they're THERE and that's what gets me. THEY. ARE. THERE.

Regardless if 'they' are 'alien' as in extra terrestrial or 'alien' as in something we're not familiar with - THEY. ARE. THERE. That alone should have people turning themselves inside out over to find out just what THEY are!

Either they are inner/outer-dimensional manifestations, or they come from right here on or more likely, from 'within' the planet. If this is the case, I think they have been here for a long, long, long time.

The 'dimensional' thing is something which truly goes against my 'gut instinct' and has all along. Does that mean I'm right? Far from it. Just saying I'm not going to entertain that possibility when my gut already tells me I'd be wasting my time.

The 'possibly from here' theory? Why not. Think about it. We know more about the 'heavens' above' than we know about the 'oceans below'. And the earths center? How much do we really know about that? Close to Nil? Is it a viable (the important word here is 'viable') possibility? My gut says yes.

The apparent elusiveness and hide and seek nonsense they subject us to indicates, "something" is being hidden.

Again - that's what just floors me! There IS something hidden. Whatever it ends up being? We have the right to know what it is. I want to know what it is. I'd like to think most people out there want to know what it is.

Something unraveling could be instigated by them fully revealing themselves and their purpose.

Don't we all hope so! Well, I do, lol.

Otherwise, my human logic lends me to believe, just perhaps, there is "something" wrong about them. Don't know what, of course. But my instincts tell me this would all come down in a very different fashion if everything were on the up and up.

I'd like to hear more of why your instinct tells you this. Really, I mean that.

Me? I see us as a mean spirited, too ready to fight before exerting a willingness to talk, paranoid, unforgiving and ignorant race as a whole. I can't imagine 'they' would want to just 'pop in on us' without a dinner invitation. I lean towards 'them' being 'cautious' rather than 'they're' here for reasons nefarious.
IMO.

I will not be one of those who run up to the ramp and eagerly await their appearance. I think I'll kinda stand back a little and let whatever is gonna happen, happen. If anything at all. Remember, you only have to be faster than the slowest person, to not be consumed.

Oh I would be. I'd be right there. I might not be the greatest ambassador of the world but I've got a lot a good will.

Then again I re-read your last line (which I love by the way) and think, hmmm, maybe I better be a little more cautious myself!

Thanks for a GREAT post/response!

So they are dropping flares looking for enemy movement while the troops are sleeping... then when they wake up and see these flares they would run in to get their video camera that I am sure is standard issue to every soldier on the battlefield?

I bust out laughing at this one!

Yep. Flares. You bet. That hang in place for 45 mins. Wow. We're really making headway on flares these days. Like they're stuck into the sky with pins they are. Sureeeeeeeee.....

Ok, I'll get out of your way now - you're doing a smashing job taking care of the trolls - much better than I could ever have done. More power to you.

Flares.

oo oo oo o

That, along with the formation itself would seem to suggest there is math involved, and whatever it may be its intelligently controlled. I'd say that rules out any natural phenomenon.

In all truth my first reaction to the photo was 'what odd spacing'... THANK YOU for filling in the detail on something that was tickling the back of my brain but I just couldn't get out.

Why not? Why not mathematical sequence(s)!

Is there someone here that can help with this? Maybe you RSF&&?

THANK YOU! Great post!

Now you trying to pin me down. And I can't say surely what these guys saw. Neither can you. Subjective at best.

No, we can't say - but we can say your theory of signal flares is a tough reach - unless it's characteristic for signal flares STAY IN PLACE and NOT FALL for over 45 minutes.

Just an observation - not taking a poke at you.

No prob. So what we have then as actual proof that lights remain there in the picture for 45 minutes is...

a soldiers tale. Got it.

The headline is misleading to be fair, it does suggest something that it really isn't, I thought it was going to be a thread about something seen on the ground.

Any way, never mind, its done..

Considering where they were seen wasn't there any radar track of these?

I man if I'm sitting where they are and a string of very odd lights suddenly starts coming and going I'd be a little worried and ask whoever is on radar to acknowledge them.

A grizzled, elite squad of U.S marines, most on their 3rd tour are encamped in the war-splintered mountains of northern Afghanistan. Their Icelandic leader is known as Ice, a muscled cigar-chomping veteran.
They have been sent in by stealth helicopter (using secret reverse engineered alien tech) to investigate strange goings-on. The local jingles reported suffering headaches and blurred vision after seeing "lights in the sky".

"Maybe Russian, maybe Chinese tech?" said gunnery sergeant Kapowski quitely.
"Maybe." repied Ice."That's what them fobbits sent us here to find out."

I really enjoyed your post. Creative, gets to the point and give us another opinion/insight into what this whole 'light' episode (might) be all about!

And who knows - maybe these light have more to do with why the US is in Afghanistan than we know!

Thanks for the post.

Edit to Add: (Normally I would send this U2U but I've stopped using that service on ATS.)

I really encourage you to seek out 'writer' status so you can join in on the Collaborative Writing section of the forums. Contact Mod Masqua via U2U for more information.

If you have the time - and choose to - we'd enjoy your input in the Space Opera. Your 'Ice' character - we could use him (or someone like him) as a 'bad guy' in the Space Opera, Saga II. We're currently in need of a protagonist!

Also Masqua has proposed a new Writing Contest that fits right in with this subject. You might really enjoy it!

If the story and pics are genuine then that's probably the best explanation so far. Them 'boys and their toys'.

But I found an interesting clue for the conspiracy fans . It's in the story. - "We were all in our office on Camp Leatherneck when we were told to come outside and see these really cool lights in the sky,"

"WE WERE TOLD TO COME OUTSIDE"

Reminds me of a black triangle story from England 1990s. Some soldiers were ordered out of their barracks in the middle of the night supposedly to try out some -already tried and tested- night vision gear. Strange enough there was a UFO out there waiting to be looked at by all those witnesses.

Interesting take on it, thanks.

I favour military for this particular sighting just because of location (war zone) but realistically it could be numerous things.

Interesting, to be certain! That they are military would seem to indicate that they would know what various aircraft look like (matter of survival there!!), and flares, etc. Too bad there isn't any video, but in reality, not a lot of them take video cams. Expensive, and the sand can really kill electronics.

In any case, flares, aircraft, etc, would MOVE, not hang around in the same place like that. Straight line doesn't sound like any stars, either. Nor could the average cheap cam capture those easily. You need long exposure ones for that, something you aren't likely to see in the hands of a deployed soldier.

Not a place I post often, either, but some interesting reports on occasion!

Unfortunately I have no footage or pictures, but myself and 3 other witnesses (along with many others) saw a similar set of lights (we counted 11) over Eastern Europe (Macedonia) while on holiday in the second half of 2006. They were moving in straight linear motion from one side of the night sky to the other. Shortly after a number of planes showed up and attempted to pursue - the lights increased speed exponentially and vanished (im assuming upwards). Local TV stations announced the next day that a number of European nations scrambled fighter planes (as well as the Americans from the European bases) however they were unsuccessful in pursuing. Like i said at the start, i have no evidence of this occuring, but i thought I'd share it as it was quite amazing to watch.

Hah! My first ever post on ATS, have been a lurker for quite a while. Let's be quick about it then. I saw pretty much the exact same lights and the exact same formation. But, in Cape Town, South Africa.

I was traveling with a mate of mine from Cape Town City towards Camps Bay, it was either late 2004 or early 2005, it was summer, clear skies etc. As we were driving the traffic started to slow down quite rapidly. Many cars pulled over and people focused their stare towards the sky over the ocean.

We also pulled over and looked. It was perfectly aligned, prominent blue lights, passing us in the sky, angled ever so slightly with a soft but deep humming noise.

Everybody obviously thought we were witness to an ET experience, to say the least, it was a UFO or UFO's. After it disappeared in the distance we just went on with our driving.

I had a photo I took on my phone then, it looked pretty much exactly like OP's pic, but my phone got lost (stolen), not to long after this "sighting". The media and newspapers made it out to be an air-force exercise, Huey Helicopters, to be exact. Till today that reason never made any sense. Do Huey Helicopters fly so silently? Why would they have such prominent blue lights, the space between the line of lights never changed, and what were they doing, exercising with Huey's, holiday time in Cape Town, South Africa. I have to admit, there is an air-force base (Ysterplaat) close by. But you never see any military air traffic, around that piece of coast.

Well, I thought I'd share this with you.

Be reasonable, be safe!

Thank you or your feedback. My cliche-ridden Predator rip was merely to illustrate how excited everyone gets when the words "alien" and "military" are combined, especially Hollywood's favorite - Marines. Quite why this combination is so potent a mix is beyond me - it's just cool I suppose. Tech versus grunt. It also is meant to poke fun at our obsession with narrativising everything - the news, our lives, our dog's lives, our shoe's lives.

You can see the principle unfolding right here on this thread. "We were told to come outside". Bingo. Pilot episode.

But anyhoo, thanks for the links. And your generally very positive stance is a nice foil to my post. Perhaps I've read too much Gollancz S.F down the years.

"Happy hunting Silo" said Ice, loading a fresh round into his M203 40 mm grenade launcher.

Nice find!

I always enjoy seeing reports from Military personnel as, in theory, they should be in the loop as to what is flying above their heads in a hostile zone.

Rule #1 - Know your surroundings.

A good look at all the solid evidence would seem to suggest that they are definitely here, and have no desire to harm us.

If we can accept that these lights are intelligently controlled, then we should be able to accept the clues hidden in our archaeological record.

If so, we can see that the reality is a far cry from the Hollywood mega drama version.

They are here, and have been as long as we have been.

But you yourself have just mega drama'ed (hmm) this by saying "if we can accept that these lights are intelligently controlled". Can you be the professor in my story? Can your next line be:

"What we need is some kind of radioactive beam."
