I can't think of many symbols which are so inherently associated with evil and brutality. So, in my example, instead of using a negative association, I have chosen to illustrate my point with a positive association with a symbol. The point is that when people see a cross they think 'Jesus' and when people see the Sig runes or the Swastika they think 'National Socialism'.

Hmmm....

I am sure there are those who feel the Christian Cross is inherently evil...........
From Atheists or Pagans,to even Muslims.

Still,it is a symbol that can be interpreted one way or another.

Just look at the Ace of spades. Some view that card as good luck, some view it as the death card. They were placed on the body's of enemy's........

And speaking of cards, are cards now inherently evil because America put out a whole deck of men they wanted to capture or kill in Iraq ?

Right or wrong, these men chose that for a specific name.Their team.

Well the logo is banned now due to the public outcry apparently.

One thing I can tell you is, really talk to a recruiter and get all the info on your possible MOS because if you change your mind after you sign the papers and ship out, you're stuck in that MOS for at least 24 months and lat moving isn't always easy. So just really consider your options first.

As far as the cuts, I'm really not sure what that's affecting really. I haven't heard much about it. If anything you'll probably just be in DEP a couple months longer than usual before you ship to boot. Just make sure you're in shape and the whole process shouldn't be bad.

You can PM me if you want to go into further detail.

hehe. The ORO (officer recruitment officer?) won't see me or discuss how to sign up until I've naturalised, so I've got a few months yet to go...

I am a fairly highly aware person when it comes to politics and history...

and the SS on that sign would never have crossed my mind to be indicative of Hitler's SS group.
Swastika? of course it would be obvious...
two letter Ss... come on... easily an innocent mistake.

A few more months yet. Just playing the waiting game right now! Takes maaaany months for the paperwork to get put through... Cheers though dude.

Again, I know we've disagreed on this thread, but I hope it was clear from my posts that I'm not someone who is inherently or innately anti-military. I could never really understand that attitude to be honest. Probably just the usual revulsion of the strong by the weak.

Although I was in the Pacific theatre, the notion that these brave men fighting for our country are proudly standing next to a banner that reminds so many of a very bad time in history is very despicable.

Yet, to these men that banner means little, I do not believe that they put that banner up as a homage to Hitlers SS forces. In their defense, maybe they're just young men who thought it looked tough. Everyone makes stupid decisions from time to time

Remember, history is written by the victors.

I understand my man. I sometimes get defensive of the Corps because there's a TON of overgeneralization regarding the military on here.

I see threads all the time where the topic isn't about the military at all, but it somehow turns into an American bash fest. The repetition is tiresome is all.

It's all good

Do Nazi's have a copyright on this?

We kicked their arses and if someone (especially Marines) want to use the SS symbol they should go right ahead and do so.

Some people just go out of their way to be offended.

Actually Russia did most of the fighting. You guys entered France in 1944.

Right so the Canadians, Chinese, and all the other militaries who have adopted this style are Nazis as well, correct?

WRONG!!!!

For a start, I did not call anyone person a nazi.
I said that todays US helmet reminds me and alot of others on this thread, its looks like 40's style German helmets "full stop"
What IS it with you and your leading questions.
I ask you again. Why did it take the US army 40-50yrs to adopt the helmet if there so smart?
Youre obviously a ex jarhead. I respect that but as I say again your zionist overlords are slowly but surely making you look like the fourth reich.

Cease the moralising do you thin the US has ever sterilised someone or deliberately infected them with a sexual disease, should I be personally offended by the US flag?! Wise up

blueorder ---- "Wise up"
--- You should be the one too wise up. First of all.... you should get your facts straight. In the 1960's, certain states in the South, like North Carolina, had a deliberate eugenics program, that sterilized male and female people who were deemed by the state as "unfit morally and mentally" to produce children.

The U.S. Federal prison system, did have a reasearch program on STD's that deliberately infected black prisoners with syphilis and gonorrhea. They U.S. also had a similar program in the 1950's on some Central American people.

Don't try to hide behind the U.S. flag, when the subject is the SS flag and what it stands for!!!

I posted earlier and still say that quite possibly the Marine Sniper Squad did not know the underlying historical significance of the SS Germanic Runes.

After reading many of the decriers of the runes and their use historically and psychologically... I'd say many of the ATSers here do not really know the history of the SS runes, WWII, Germany, the role of the USA in WWII, the Russians, the weather, geology, geography, astronomy, ancient history, the Bible, the Torah, the Koran, or much of any thing else that is not on YouTube.

Maybe the use of the SS runes was innocent enough, a really cool and inherently macho symbol of a marine Sniper Squad.

On the other hand... let's say they knew what the SS runes stood for. Frankly, I say go for it. The idea of a flag, a unit symbol... is to strike fear into the enemy at it's first sight. It is psychological in boosting the feeling of superiority..of being a "bad ass MF" on the field of battle. Invincible. The SS did that in WWII and still does that now. Think about it...the Skull and CrossBones was used by pirates in various forms and is still used by military and police units the world ocver...and it was used bu the SS... the Totenkopf.. the 3rd SS panzergrenadier division.

Now based on the logic displayed here...the SS used the skull and crossbones...does that make ECU pirate fans sympathetic to the Nazis? Was Blackbeard the pirate a closet Nazi? Are all the people down on the Pamlico Sound of NC that fly pirate flags white supemicist and Nazis?

The other nazi sympathizers and political units of the national Socialist were the SD... the brown shirts... so is South Dakota a Nazi hideout... lots of blonde haired blue eyed german descendants there...accidental or on purpose?

Frankly, I just think these are a bunch of hard ass young men that stare death in the face everyday and need the mental boost and "pump up" of symbols on the battlefield...a look atmilitary history will show as much in any war.

I hope none of you swastika haters ever go on vacation to India or far east Asia...

Here's a funny fact about traveling in India. If someone, f. ex a cab driver asks you where you're from, tell them you're from Germany. Every once in a while you come across someone who starts to praise Hitler and the Nazis, the swastika flag etc. Many over there view Hitler and the Nazis like history buffs view f. ex Alexander the Great or Julius Caesar; great conquerors and semi-heroes...

Cultural differences, eh?

People really should know their history better.

That symbol represents millions of people murdered: Russian and Ukrainian peasants who were slaughtered in literally uncountable millions, 10-12 million political prisoners, Jews, Romany and other "undesirables" in the concentration camps.

I doubt they were trying to give homage to the Nazi SS (at least I hope they weren't), but to not know something that should be such basic, common knowledge of history is pretty unforgivable in other ways.

Millions of people murdered don't need a symbol. It stands for itself.
