You can't shut down the internet.

Let's assume the worst case scenario, and that's shutting down all DNS root servers in the US of A .. countries or even communities could set up their own ones. People would immediately start setting up own wider area networks, quickly spanning whole countries or even continents, and then what ? They'd lose every iota of control they ever had. Stupid plan.

I tell you how they are going to do it. They will introduce an internet license, similar to a drivers license. And when they want to silence you, maybe because you're a way too freedom loving blogger, all they have to do is find a single fracking pirated music clip on your HDD and there goes your license.

Judging by the speed at which technology is advancing, I say in 25-30 years we'll have full automated biometric access control on most systems so you'll have a very hard time getting online without a license.

I went 6 months without the internet so I know I would be just fine. However, we definitely wouldn't be eating sweet and sour pork from the crock pot tonight since I got the recipe from the internet! Also, I'm sure plenty of people would go crazy because they couldn't check their facebook. I'm not on facebook, so I wouldn't miss a thing. Maybe I would miss ATS a little

it would be better for them if they kept it running so they could listen to what was going on.

Well, the question is not much of what would I do if the internet shut down, cause there is nothing I could do about it besides starting living again. On the other hand if the internet shuts down, I think it would be a global cathastrophy. The world financial system will collaps, everything from food, fuel, utilities, goverment agencies, and even public services like the police and fire dept. will be interupted. It will be a hell, maybe the end of many millions of people. For sure we will be back to the dark ages.

A good portion of the ATS community would become anti social because the internet shutting down would force them to shove their ridiculous rhetoric down peoples throats IN PERSON...Heaven forbid.

Lose my job since it lives online, and probably do something outdoors for work. In terms of research, I miss the library anyway. In terms of community, it's all around it just needs to be engaged. In terms of news.... well.

In 25-30 years we'll have embedded "Internet" chips in our bodies. True cyborgs... but only for the rich!

Like many have said: read more, also be a bit more active, be outside more, perhaps talk to more people in person. Honestly, sounds pretty good to me. Of course, it would be a huge loss in many ways. The world would slow back down a tad, many would panic and go nuts. Sad that people would riot more over that than anything else. Just like in China: little resistance to government, but when the apple store runs out: mass rioting and panic.

Lasted a week and a half back in October/Nov due to the great Northeast Outage could last again.. the generator provided the computers with power enough to watch things stored locally and get some much needed work done.. Don't think it would be as bad as you think it would be..

Well........ need to get that old land line back again and then get the bbs software out again. Ran a BBS in the 70/80's and it worked. Could do that way again. Just found a UR Courier 144 and a 56k both external. That old 486 would make a great server again. I grew up on USENET, not the Internet. Kind of like Dos VS Windows to me. A lot of bloat. Just depends on what you want from it. We had files, public forum, some private mail and online games behind the 'doors'.

Again...
USENET is a part of Internet.
So.. that wouldn't work either..
Unless you can find some other network who carries the USENET groups.

The Internet is a wide-ranging network, parts of which are subsidized by various governments.
It carries many kinds of traffic, of which Usenet is only one.
And the Internet is only one of the various networks carrying Usenet traffic.

FAQ: USENET

But that's exactly what a bbs system is, another network, ever heard of FidoNeT? maybe you should check it out, global scale, no internet required.

USENET is NOT part of the internet, it is carried over the internet, but that's not required at all, it can run on a bbs network like FidoNet quite easily.

edit on 10-2-2012 by Kaifan because: (no reason given)

Yes, I know what FidoNet is.
Back in the days, I did run a FidoNet BBS (SomeWhere BBS), 2:205/224 was my FidoNet address.
And.. I run it for 5 years.

So, I know what FidoNet is.

And there was No UseNet there at all.

Well Tomten, we were a reginal. Was a riot of a time too. In the end, it just became a burden to continue. One day it just got the off switch and that was the end of it. Four boxes of 1.44 floppies and a 486 to remember it by.

Back doors had a different meaning then.......

A lovely time..
I first run the BBS on a Atari ST.
Then moved it over to a Acorn A3000.
And.. then finally to a 486 computer running OS/2.

The phone bills where high though..
..since first the 2400 bps took a long time to download all FidoNet stuff.
The 28800 bps modems later helped to get the bills down though. Heheheh..

What would YOU do if the Internet Shut Down?

With all the talk of SOPA and ACTA and the FBI arrests of Megaupload and similar arrests against Pirate Bay it seems that we are getting closer everyday to an internet shut down

We have all seen the SOPA test banner that scared the crap out of many people at ATS when they logged on and missed reading "This is a test" fine print

We have all heard the threats from Anonymous that they will hack sites...

Then last night we saw another 'test' ATS password reset....

eerrmmm it WAS a test right?

Well looking at the comments in the board thread...

Login Password reset?
www.abovetopsecret.com...

... it is obvious that most of you here would never last a week of internet shut down

can we say PANIC?

So imagine what you would do with your lives if the internet REALLY shut down and sites like ATS were gone for ever...

like the members of Open Minds forum woke up to one day

lucianarchy.proboards.com...

So what would YOU do if you woke up tomorrow and the internet was......

GONE

Probally I would read a book or take a walk.

this is tough i like the internet to gain vast amount of knowledge fast and for comic relief but i also dont want it because i just wish that we lived in the old days where you walked everywhere and you explored and apprieciate your surrounding and nature more and would just be a better society.....
p.s i wish currency wasnt invented to and it was like you trade goods to get the goods you want
