In the early nineties Iran was spending an estimated $2.8 billion annually to purchase tanks, submarines and missiles. China helped Iran build a research reactor and trained Iranian nuclear technicians. The US assisted Iran in the development of nuclear weapons by approving $83 million worth of licences for the export of advanced computers and high tech equipment!!

If Russia is now assisting Iran they are only following the lead of China and US.

I don't think the United States would plan a full scale invasion of Iran. I think they would take out nuclear facilities and other infrastructure. The question we should ask is what would Iran do if we strike their facilities?

Let me repeat this for you, a wide variety of military and educational sites and references can be pulled and utilized to verify what I first implied, SiberianTiger. That despite what you wish to believe, your numbers are in error, period! Afghanistan was Russia's 'Vietnam'. Russia invaded with huge numbers and in a time span of 10 years did not conquer or control Afghanistan. 200 US troops killed is nothing as compared to the 11,000-16,000 Russian troops killed, nor the Russian equipment that was destroyed or lost.

Bottom line, SiberianTiger, Russia was defeated by the Afghanistan. Russia got spanked and was sent back home packing and in withdrawal.

The using invading or going to war with Iran is a hypothetical situation and one huge big "if" that will probably never come to fruitition. Your desire to see the US get defeated or bloodied as Russia did in Afghanistan is a dream, that won't happen. Besides, seems the Chechnyians are doing a exemplary job in keeping the Russian's hands full.
