Oklahoma 3.M
I'm sure it was totally natural and random. and no where near a fracking pad. or injection site
The only natural disaster not found in Oklahoma: tsunamis and hurricanes. i think
Right now they only have drought, brushfires, and earthquakes. The tornadoes weren't so bad this year.

Perhaps one thing to consider is the implications of that eruption signature, and what it means for volcanoes all over. Scientists had tracked increased seismic activity, but then there was a lull, as can be seen right before the VLP (Very Long Period) event which then transgressed into the eruption. While some may say there was no warning, there was. They had the increase in seismic activity, and they also had the VLP itself. Once that VLP came up and lasted for more than 20 seconds, alarm bells should have been ringing, before the eruption.

It makes me think of Long Valley, for example. Yes, a supervolcano. In 1989, they experienced a massive quake swarm, and there have been three VLP events that I know of under Mammoth Mountain, maybe more. But in those cases, it died down with no eruption each time. It just goes to show that there may not be much warning before one of these beasts goes off. And it also goes to show that without a human manning the guns to alert people to these VLP's, that the auto pages may not go out at all. Look at the low level of the first part of that signal, before the clip. If that happened at LV or Yellowstone and no one was there to catch it within seconds, valuable time would be lost. They may not get a page at all until it explodes.

Which is why I am trying to get that changed. And I have volunteered for the night watch, over all of the dangerous volcanoes that threaten the US. But the scientists are not taking me seriously, despite my repeated attempts to get them to fund me a small operation that could do this easily, and dirt cheap. I hope that doesn't come back to bite them in the arse one of these days.

Damn.
It's way too early for my small swarm prediction at YS.

Agreed with you TA.
Pity it always take one big disaster before changes are applied.

It seems that many of the hot spots around the world are acting up? What about the Island Park caldera VEI8 in Idaho, it seems to be working in tandem with Yellow Park? Either RSOE is crossing these two locations, or they are connected in recent activity? Not sure what to make of this. Just an observation, nothing more...

yeah thats the trouble, not enough $ resources, unlike the facilities they have for Mt.Vesuvius which are monitored 24/7 www.ov.ingv.it...

leave it to politicians and nothing will be done

When you think about the potential damage an eruption at Yellowstone could cause, that could effect the entire planet, you would think the monitoring budget would be in the hundreds of millions.
I read your post about the swarm at Hebgen Lake, well done, you seem to have the magnitudes figured out

I followed the July 11-19th micro earthquake swarm at Tongariro here for a few days then left it, was getting conflicting data from Geonet Rapid (automatic) and the main database. On the TV they mentioned "hundreds" of minor quakes over the last few weeks, I didn't see that many, I counted 66 in those 2 swarms, there were more afterwards, but just a couple per day. These volcanic earthquake swarms usually die away with no actual volcanic activity resulting, but in this case ............... kaboom

Good work as usual. Wow, I had no idea a lot of those quakes were so close to Taupo.
Tongariro is only like 22 km or so from the south edge of Lake Taupo, last I measured... And just about the time she quieted down, boom. That was a pretty small eruption though. I'd keep my eyes 22 km north of there, just in case. Talk about a nightmare if Taupo went off in grand fashion! So the scientists are sure those are completely disconnected magma bodies....right?

Hmm, that's interesting...they just upgraded the 2.9 at Hebgen Lake to a 3.2 ML:
www.seis.utah.edu...

Oh, 3.2 eh? Right...So I wonder how many auto pages got sent out?
Answer: probably none. While in the meantime, the scientists at the YVO got my email after about the first 9 or 10 quakes, once I saw it was persistent activity.

Puterman and I have been trying to find an RSS feed from JMA without any luck, the best I could find was a mobile phone feed that only went down to mag 3.6

Any clues?

If it keeps raining today I'll do a Wakayama prefecture map of all the earthquakes there that I have on file, they are mostly preliminary events from NIED, not all confirmed JMA yet.

Thanks TA. Thing is you don't know at the time the relevance of what you are seeing, I tend to notice the clusters of icons when I do the maps and take it from there, rather than just look at one spot waiting for action.
My wife worked for the Taupo District Council back in the 1970's (before I met her) and she says they do have things monitored quite well with GPS and seismic recorders all over the place, some not available to the public. They also have an evacuation plan.
This is the 4th volcano to erupt in the North Island in my lifetime, Ngauruhoe in 1973-5, Ruapehu in 1994-5, White Island 2000 and now Tongariro 2012 so were "used" to them

The one that would effect us most down here (due to the prevailing winds) is Egmont, on a clear day you can see the cone from our beach, but its been dormant for a long time.
Tongariro isn't that far away either, 200km.I see the forecast ash fall has changed to the south this morning, we should still be OK we got a southerly wind coming up through Cook Strait to keep us clear. www.geonet.org.nz...

Hello,

My name is Robin Marks.
And I"m a quakaholic. I am here at these self help meetings because I need to make sense of the world.
I am more than just a quakaholic. I've in all honesty been hooked by so many things I'm more scarred than the big old catfish at the local fishing hole. Mostly recovered I can say. Also, I've become addicted to psychology.
Because I'm nuts. A by product of this study has enabled me to understand other people's motives. This real helps me not want to murderalize the odd buffoon or two. I came up with that word with my son and I own it. Rights reserved. It's kinda like what Homer does to Bart. In the old days, I used to believe what people said. I just thought that's the way things are. It's just that simple. Naively, and over a long period, I've come to understand us. It took pulling back and looking at it objectively. Like George Carlin said, "I don't have a stake in it anymore, and since I can be objective, I get a clearer picture." That's paraphrasing. I say a couple of different interviews. But the idea is if you look at humans as a scientist, you see us for what we trully are.

I forget what he said. But I agree with naked violent apes.

Now. In war, the is really only one thing. Lies.

Here's something from an article.

"Drilling never causes earthquakes," Frohlich said in a telephone interview. "Fracking almost never causes earthquakes ... While there are probably millions of hydrofracking jobs, only a few have caused earthquakes and they've all been little tiny earthquakes."

Wait!!!!!!! "Drilling never causes earthquakes."

In the same breath no less...

"Fracking almost never causes earthquakes."

Never is never. Never=Never.

So which is it?
Drilling never causes earthquakes. Or drilling causes earthquakes at a low percentage.

in.reuters.com...

FRACKING CAUSES EARTHQUAKES

Frackquakes may be small. They may be a low probability. But when your fracking in siesmic zones, why can't you trigger a big one. Just because it hasn't happened yet. Sorry. That's the official line. A couple of 4-5.8M have been trigger by injection and exactly whose to say it wasn't one of those odd teeny tiny quakes that set off a chain reaction. Straw+ Camel's back=

Frackquakes.
That's what they are.
Injection wells are part of the hydraulic fracturing drilling process.
Injection = Fracking = Earthquakes

Frackquakes
Stop splitting fracking hairs.

Just retorical.

PuterMan . . . sorry I haven't kept up on this issue but I assume you have . . .

What's the status of the allegations that the powers that be have

A) diminished in the recent past (decades?) the values of the Richter scale--supposedly down 10 pts. What used to be called an 8.0 is now called a 7.0 etc.

B) diminish the intensity value of current quakes and/or take them off their records, sites entirely. I'm NOT talking about refinements and adjustments from more data coming in or geologists looking at computer generated data later.

I keep coming across this issue from time to time and it SOUNDS like some folks are convinced there's a serious conspiracy involved but I don't really have a clue what's true and not true on the issues.

Thanks in advance.

I've been getting a bad feeling of uneasiness lately, and then I just came across the following posted yesterday:

Thought someone might have posted the following here by now:

Ok so we may all remember the guy who apparently predicted the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, Mitchell Combes? He was an ATS member for a period if i recall correctly.

Story is that he posted a 104 hour countdown to the earthquake and got it 100% correct. Different thoughts and ideas circulate as to whether that was a legit prediction or not.

Nonetheless he has just posted his first real prediction since the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, and if he is correct, we are in for a massive global incident very shortly. Here is what he posted about 45 minutes ago on his Facebook page:

Ok everyone, you've been warned of what's to come, we are getting extremely close to the 104 hour tsunami warning. I strongly advise that if you live on the east coast of NSW and west coast of USA, have your evacuation gear ready to go as soon as possible. I said on March 11 that California would be next after Japan's countdown... Sydney's earthquake will be magnitude 9.5, California's earthquake will be magnitude 9.6, followed by two 9.4's, all of these tsunamis will be created in the same exact hour.

3 MEGA QUAKES PREDICTED Massive Tsunamis???

Anyone but this guy and I'd just laugh it off!

ADD: If he hasn't already (still reading posts), hopefully PM can go on to that post and post some sensible facts and calm people down

NOTE: Apparently the 'countdown' prediction hasn't actually 'started' yet, so can RELAX for a bit longer!

Wakayama earthquakes (for some reason I keep spelling it Whakayama)

Wakayama showing an increase in earthquake activity? well sort of, here are the facts from the people who should know, the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED) of Japan who feed the data to JMA.
I've only got data back to July13th right now but;

13th July to July 31st a period of 19 days inclusive
mag1= 36, mag2= 6, mag3= 0
mag4= 0, mag5= 0, mag6= 0
total= 42
total energy released= 0.818 TTNT (tons of TNT)

1st August to 7th August a period of 7 days inclusive
mag1= 29, mag2= 3, mag3= 1
mag4= 0, mag5= 0, mag6= 0
total= 33
total energy released= 0.940 TTNT (tons of TNT)

there haven't been any quakes there since 00:00:00 Aug 8th UTC ( about 4 hours ago)

heres your interactive map of the Wakayama area earthquakes goo.gl...

you can click or unclick the two main files on the left hand panel to switch each set on or off.
I don't see any pattern myself
your 2.9ML at JST: 08/08/2012 00:59:21 is the 2nd one on the preliminary list.
I wouldn't be too worried, I know its a short time span covered, but the amount of energy involved is micro sized

FWIW according to Usami (1987, 1996) and Ganse and Nelson (1981, 1982), Raid and Myers (1985), WGDC/WDC-A (1989), Dunbar and others (1992) there was an [color=157DEC]8.4 on the 3rd August 1361AD with an accompanying tsunami that killed 500 people and a [color=157DEC]8,3 on August 22nd 887AD with tsunami both located offshore SW of Gobo and Tanabe, Wakayama and wouldn't luck have it the first ever recorded quake in Japan was just to the east of Osaka, a 7.0 on 26th June 599AD, 7th Year of Emperor Suiko: north of Nara
