There are some widowers who decide to become a priest and many former Protestant ministers who convert and become priests still remaining married.

Here are the verses in the Gospel where Jesus speaks of celibacy. Read the footnotes too if you like. Celibacy is not a Dogma of the Church. It is a Discipline, it can be changed.

The Pope is right. It was common in America for a girl to marry at 12 not long ago. In the 1990's in the State of New Mexico you could sleep with a 13 year old if you had one of the parents consent to date her. I know somebody who was arrested for doing such because the dad objected.....but since mommy consented to them dating....he got out of jail.

But thats not pedophilia, you are talking about teens, already in puberty. Pedophilia, meaning prepubescent children, was not common.

There is nothing misleading in title the pope is talking in the past sense: 'was in conformity' in reference to the 1970,s. Further the article goes on to mention an ongoing investigation in which in the 80s a known pedophile priest was allowed to work with children.
This is an ongoing problem. A lepord does not change its spots over night.. There is something very wrong with the church...

You seem to be indicating that Pope Benedict is "in conformity" with pedophilia in the 1970's. He is talking about society not the church. He does mention the priest scandals and the terrible hurt to children who were involved. You are correct that it is an ongoing program of the church to see that this will not happen again.

It occurs to me that the Catholic Church's history of child-abuse has been allowed, in recent years, to become public knowledge for a reason.

Maybe it's in preparation for the 'One True Religion' scam, where we're (allegedly) to be globally educated that all current religions are wrong, and invited to accept the Antichrist-in-disguise... or die horrifically for non-acceptance.

I hope karma creeps up behind all these monsters anyways - be they catholic priests or otherwise - and deals with them appropriately.

Thank you DavidGrouchy for posting the correct context of the Pope's speech. I'm not Catholic and therefore don't have a horse in this race, but I hate shoddy biased reporting and this trend to cut and paste choice pieces for blogs and pass them off as legitimate news is reaching disturbing proportions.

Edit to add: everyone bashing the Pope, whom I'm not overly fond of myself, please take the time to read the link David Grouchy provided. It will show the full and real message of the Pope which does not in any way condone pedophiles. He is talking about understanding the sick attitudes in society and moral ambiguity that allows people to justify rank evil to themselves. He did not say the church bears no culpability. Not at all. People we need to vet our news sources and make sure we have the full story before we pull out the pitchforks and torches! This is an era of sloppy reporting and blogs that can look legitimate but in reality can be biased or full of half truths. Deny ignorance!

One thing I hate more than a controlling religion is a sensationalistic and misleading title! I think the Catholic religion is the most deceitful and dangerous one and I love a good Pope-bashing... but not as a result of deceit.

And to the OP. You use the actual title of the article (fine), but in your OP you do not appear to have researched it very well. You propagate the sensationalism instead of bringing the real story.

The pope makes a speech rallying against such things, and giving a bit of a how we got here speech.
in turn, some ats poster decides to twist all words and clip meanings to suit a purpose totally opposite of the content.

Then a bunch of yobs jump in and without checking source, content, or anything else, go with it.

months from now, we at ATS are supposed to simply acknowledge as some sort of fact that the pope (in this case) is pro-pedo because..after all, there was a thread about it.

So, there are two things going on here. a ops that directly mislead someone and painted a picture of deception..and the mods whom have the power to alter the first post and headline to match reality that choose not to..both are damning this website into nonsense and lies. I am now getting my news from the mainstream media more and more...at least they do a bit of fact checking and don't purposefully send out disinformation on the scale of this.

Look at some reactions..murder the pope, burn the church..all because the ops lied. very unnerving to say the least.

oh, and I am atheist...there are many reasons you can come to validly dislike the catholic church...making up lies and distorting the facts however is repulsive.
