You are absolutely right. It costs a helluva lot more money to try and eat healthier! God forbid we want to get our children all organic foods. A lot of people just don't have the money to be able to do that. They want to keep us unhealthy so our money can keep flowing through the healthcare system. It all ties in together. There is a reason why obesity is an epidemic.

The craziest thing I seen was the daily show a few days ago. they had a report of failed bills in congress and how this one bill, a incentive to get people to be healthier (lower insurance for good lifestyles) was blocked and failed

by the american heart association, american cancer society, and erm..one more of the like...I think diabetes..

so, government tries to give incentive for the people to get healthy and the big guns that theoretically supposed to be wanting us to be healthy blocks any incentive...mhmm

the health industry has no interest in seeing us healthy...actually, it sort of makes sense...why would the american cancer society want a cure for cancer when all their funding comes in fighting it...cure it and your all out of a job..same with all the rest (diabetes, heart issues, etc)...make it all treatable and chronic, never cured.

I disagree with HFCS, in fact I authored a thread on my old account about it.

But, i think sodas are perfectly fine, as long as they are diet, and preferably, Zevia, which is a diet soda sweetened with stevia. If you dont know what that is, look it up.

There have been a number of studies that have come out recently claiming "diet" soda is actually worse for you than the regular stuff. The body still surges itself with insulin when you drink a diet soda, because it is tricked into believing you are ingesting a sugary substance.

Since there IS no sugary substance, the insulin remains elevated in your bloodstream, prompting your hormones that control your appetite to surge. This leads to additional caloric intake, with cravings for sweets/starch/carbohydrates, to help break down the insulin.

Also, "diet" soda also has the same effect of decalcification of the body as the normal stuff does.

Overall, it's literally the worst thing you could put into your body, other than alcohol and drugs. Speak to any nutritionist if you don't believe it.

I have a friend who was addicted to tab in the late 1970's. She is only 54 years old and has had a total of four hip replacements due to the degeneration of her bones. (each hip twice) Her most recent surgery is already failing... Very sad situation for such a young woman. Stay away from that stuff. I have never liked carbonation and so I have never been a soda drinker... so glad.

Also, diet sodas don't have the calories that sodas have.

You guys need to stoically so parinoid. Your in a dreamworld too.. Just this one looks more like a nightmare.

I'll tell you one frikkin thing about "diet" soft drinks ... the artificial sweeteners used therein cause cancer and proven by testing on animals, so next time you enjoy your drink mate just think thousands and thousands of innocent animals where tortured then murdered so you could drink it ....I see your throwing insults ... learn how to spell

Don't know if this was mentioned... I decided to stop reading and post after several people had mentioned how they thought Vitamin Water was 'good' for them.

I just googled "vitamin water, bad" and read the first article. I thought it was pretty much understood that it was just glorified sugar water. But- there are also people claiming diet soda is ok. I mean, what's ok, really? Anyone for real food anymore?

Anywho- here's the article that breaks it all down:

VITAMIN WATER= GLORIFIED SUGAR DRINK

Namaste ya'all! :-)

Organic is great but you can make a lot of progress towards healthy diet just being selective in what and how you eat. I'm frankly tired of hearing how costly it is to switch to a healthier diet. It's not. Just eating more veggies is better for you than meat and processed food, and doesn't cost more. Rice and beans are quite cheap and provide great nutrition. Sweet potatoes can be found at dirt cheap prices and this is great food. Even a plate of pasta with some good sauce is not too bad as nutrition goes and it's really not expensive at all. For drinks, I personally drink Seltzer, zero calories, no sugar and basically no additives.

Well I just posted on that subject but I'll say it again -- it's doesn't, unless you insist on 100% organic diet. You can still eat healthier and for less money if you want.

From my experience id say that organic is much more expensive...dont ask me why

and beware of the fake organic produce they use to market their products.

I already said that, and I will repeat again -- you don't need to go 100% organic to start benefiting from a better diet.

Some do... In my case, I just don't see a compelling reason to imbibe a liquid laced with dubious chemicals. I actually kind of like diet soda, and drink it occasionally, but not often at all, maybe twice a month on average. I just don't like it enough to justify drinking it on constant basis.

yeah i like soda as well...but i only drink it maybe 2 times a week compared to what kids drink or what the average couch potato drinks

but there are times when people have to realize what its actually doing to them... i know its hard to quit but alternatives like juices would help you fight soda addictions

Our kids' doctor says that juices you buy in a store are mostly sugar anyhow. If you get a juicer, than it's better.

I guess OJ has good nutritional value... Calcium and Vitamin C.

yes exactly avoid the juices such as cranberry or others like apple juice... those are always from concentrate and has alot of sugar.. its best to buy orange juice "NOT from concentrate" or buy your own juicer

Why? because organic fruits have a higher chance of dying, and they can slap the label on and people will buy it for a higher price. Also, There is no "Fake organic" If it is labeled organic, it has to be certified by the FDA...

Now why you are willing to pay 40 cents more a pound for fruit that is smaller and has less flavor and a higher risk of diseise.... THATS the question.

Thankyou, nice to see some reason on diet.
While it is more expensive to eat the branded "organic" foods up for sale today, eating healthier foods and eatier healthier in general is most times just a switch of what you would normally eat. It's just a matter of trading off the processed and "quick" foods we have all been geared to buy, and change it with healthier alternatives. Sometimes it's just a matter of adjusting the size and times of the meals you have. We are lead to believe that dinner should be the biggest meal of the day, when we eat and then sit down to watch the news after. My biggest meal is lunch, follwed by an afternoon of work then exercise after work, which is usually only an hour or so. Dinner, if anything is small, like a sandwich or salad, just enough to tide you over till the next morning. Just making a few changes in diet doesn't have to mean a huge outlay in cost.

Organic foods made it to the grocery store safe and sound and fresh! not dying, your argument is invalid
edit on 10/8/2011 by ApplesOnFire because: (no reason given)

regular chemical and GM fruits and veggies give you cancer not organic thats why people demand real food not genetically modified.
edit on 10/8/2011 by ApplesOnFire because: (no reason given)

and btw they can use the organic label to provoke buyers
