First off let me just say Happy Halloween! from America... everyone is out and what not lol....but i want to know do atheists celebrate Halloween? a celtic holiday, in the old days they created carvings out of squash to ward off evil spirits they believed would haunt them... today its known as an awesome day in America and other countries

im too old for collecting candy but i do put up decorations and get candy... unless there are still 20 year olds who collect candy lol.

the reason why i asked is because atheists are against religion and Halloween is a religious holiday. (YES it is)

Halloween is a commercial holiday for many people, religious or non-religious, much like Christmas, Easter, etc. I'm not sure what more there is to say than that..

I have athiests in my family.
They enjoy Halloween and celebrate it along with the rest of us.
To them, it's not about religion. It's about a fun thing to enjoy. Costumes, parties, handing out candy to kids and what not.

It's not about religion to me, as well. No matter what it used to mean, it's a party time now.

Atheists do not believe in God(s/esses). Seeing how I think Halloween is a Pagan holiday, and the only people who attribute any spiritual value to it today are Catholics and Wiccans, then yes Atheists can celebrate it.

atheists are not against religion, they do not believe there is a god. there is nothing else that makes them different. I am one and i enjoy Halloween very much thank you and i always have.

the belief that the spirits of our ancestors and loved ones surround us predates every religion...

Halloween is very secular now, unless you are religious yourself. I left out offerings for Hecate, for instance. But most people just use it as an excuse to eat candy, get drunk, and have kinky roleplay sex.

Halloween is pretty much a secular holiday.
Really how is it any different then mardi gras?
both holidays have catholic roots however they have become removed from their religious origin.

Where I'm from, Halloween is just an excuse for the women to dress provacative. Not that I'm complaining

Sure, a small minority of Atheists may want to get rid of all religion... but much like Pagans just wish for the right to practice our religious without persecution, most Atheists wish for the right to not practice without persecution.

Halloween has never been a Religious ritual.. and the modern American version is just another bastardised Media inspired day to spend, spend, spend.. that has gotten so far from the roots of what the day/night is all about.

Even here in Oz this ridiculously twisted modern version is being pushed on us.. so we can just follow the U.S. culture.. as is being done in all aspects of Australian life where we have lost our uniqueness in many ways.

All Hallows Eve.. or Samhain.. was never an EVIL thing, in fact it was based on Love.

It was the time of year when we invited those who passed from life in the previous year to join family in a celebration and feast before the dead pass into the next world.

How anyone can BELEIVE that is evil has got me beat.. seriously.

What America has done to Samhain is simply disgustingly pathetic.. but go enjoy your costumes and Candy anyway.

You know your continual bashing away at this and lumping all atheists in one pot is beginning to get very tiresome.

Just because you have a 'thing' about one particular group of atheists would you please stop tarring us all with the same brush.

The atheists I know have no such targeted goal and are quite happy to let those who believe believe and vice versa.

not an atheist group. a group of angry dolts that happen to also be atheists.

guess i'm a constitutional atheist. you have every right to practice any religion, i have a right also to believe none of the above.I am not against holidays, birthdays, etc.
