YU55 will be a magnitude of 11, that's dimmer than Elenin was and you reckon it will be visible during the day?

OK in all seriousness. I think the New Madrid fault line has them nervous, so they want this system in place to make sure all of the citizens can be warned/informed when the New Madrid fault line unleashes the next big one.

I bet the Virginia earthquake that happened a few months ago made them wish they had the system in place earlier.

I dont think they have the ability to shut down HAM radios, do they?? That would probably be the only line of real communication if they did so, because you have your antenna, and reciever, so pretty much all you need is someone on the other end recieving your broadcasting. I guess if they shut off the power too, then people might be up a creek, unless you use alternative energy and can produce your own power.

The British Govt had the capability to shut down the phone system (even traditional landlines) since the 1950's, and have used it several times to great effect.

Erm can you give some links to this statement? cos I cant find any evidence to say the British goverment have ever shut down our phone networks, Not saying they can't but you state they have done it several times so please prove it.

I don't understand why they would shut down the very thing they control the masses with.

To the best of my knowledge no. HAM radios, I dont believe, are part of this testing. I think this is geared solely at the EAS testing.

Although the post above this made me think oif the scene out of the old 80's movie V, when the visitors addressed the world.

I would prefer testing or ET disclosure over skynet becoming operatonsl and ushering in the new world order.

FCC - EAS testing

At the Federal Communications Commission's June 9, 2011 Agenda meeting, Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau Chief Jamie Barnett, joined by representatives from FEMA and the National Weather Service, announced that the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) would take place at 2:00 PM (Eastern Standard Time) on November 9, 2011. The purpose of the test is to assess the reliability and effectiveness of the EAS as a public alert mechanism. EAS Participants currently participate in state-level monthly tests and local-level weekly tests, but no top-down review of the entire system has ever been undertaken. The Commission, along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will use the results of this nationwide test to assess the reliability and effectiveness of the EAS as a public alert mechanism, and will work together with EAS stakeholders to make improvements to the system as appropriate.

I think when the term cut off means is just like any other eas broadcast. The screen goes to the black screen with white lettering with the annoying tones followed with the broadcast. Usually only last a minute or 2.

Has any one of us ever regretted selling that old CB radio, shortwave, SSB, sat-phone, etc? Events such as these are excellent reasons to reconsider having ways to communicate and to receive information if TV and radio within the jurisdiction of the FCC is turned off. Just like the kids in Egypt who set up remote mobile internet servers when their government attempted to run the table by turning off their internet access... we need to be as smart and more prepared. I recently purchased 2 old CB radios for a song. I also grabbed a bunch of those little mobile transceivers with a range of a mile or so on a good day. This way, I have eyes and ears beyond my front door.

While things are turned off, it might be revealing to record some radio and television signal leading up to the shut-off as well following the resumption of service, just to see what there is to see. Probably there will be nothing out of the ordinary, but maybe something interesting will become more visible in the absence of all that radio frequency noise. Maybe we can reprogram our scanners to monitor some frequencies we usually ignore. Maybe Hey, something a bit unusual is scheduled to happen and we have notification in advance. Let's exploit it.

Is it unreasonable to consider that maybe the FCC will also attempt to transmit something or turn something else ON that might function better if all that other stuff was turned off?

As someone who knows exactly what is going on, let me clear up some things for "Tin Foil Hat Brigade"....

The government is not shutting down all the TV and radio signals in the country! They are merely performing the FIRST EVER National Test of the Emergency Alert System. This is actually a really good idea, since it has never been done before. I mean seriously, would you install an alarm system on your house, never test it, and just hope that if someone breaks in it will work? Hell no! You would want to make sure the system worked like it was supposed to. I'm just surprised that it has taken the idiots at the FCC and FEMA this long to actually test the system.

As far as "Government Control of The Civilian Air-Waves".... what a BS statement!
What do you think the FCC is?
THE GOVERNMENT DOES CONTROL THE AIRWAVES, and they are far from civilian! They OWN the airwaves and allow licensed operators to use them! They license and regulate all AM, FM, TV, Satellite, cable, cellular, telephone, and Microwave communications throughout the country. Do you have any idea of the amount of rules and regulations imposed on these license holders? The company I work for has to employ a team of attorneys just to make sure we are compliant with all the FCC rules!

The government has the ability to issue fines for violations, shut down non-compliant operators, and ..... require that we participate in the Emergency Alert System. While I do not agree with all the rules and regulations that are imposed on broadcasters, I kinda feel like warning the public of an emergency is not such a bad thing to require.
How and why the government will ultimately use the EAS in the event of an "emergency" may be up for debate, but as for now....

This is a test of the Emergency Alert System, this is only a test. If this was actual emergency, you would be given instructions on which FEMA camp to report to.

I rarely ever watch tv, or listen to the radio unless i am taking a shower and then its just for a few minutes in a day. It's not going to effect me at all unless the U.S. happens to get multi nuked nationwide.

After saying that it makes me wonder, wouldn't that be the perfect time to attack the U.S. when the people have no idea what is going on?

The EAS reminds me of the emregency broadcast system that was implemented during the late 50's and early 60's with the sirens due to the Cuban Missle Crisis.

TV radio at 2:00 pm??? who will be watching tv, or listening to raido most are at work, most others are on the net/web, now if it comes on and blacks out the web/net when I am on ATS then that would be a real intrusion, the ones this will effect are the ones that stay home and watch the day time soaps, game shows, or reruns of reruns or Law and order and other old tv shows, so on that day turn off your TV turn off your radio, go to the park go for a walk go window shopping, or turn it ATS and get the latest, whats up with this "Feds Will Temporarily Cut Off All TV and Radio Broadcasts" feedback, how many heard it, seen it, payed attention too it... did you?

Everyone talks of comets and phantom planets hitting the earth...and you wonder the need for the gov's to reach a majority of people in most states and provinces at once? In case any Earth-effected events happen....how'd you want them to contact everyone?

Is it just me or are they doing the normal tests alot more these days. I remember when it was a monthly test now it's weekly yet I see it 2-3 times a week. Feels like they are gearing up for something... But thats another topic for another thread.

The Reason for this is the Government do not want us to see something Its going to be a big cover up and they dont want us the people getting wind of it, like the saying goes the best place to Hide something is right under one's nose.

The President has sole responsibility for determining when the EAS will be activated at the national level, and has delegated this authority to the director of FEMA. FEMA is responsible for implementation of the national-level activation of the EAS, tests, and exercises. The NWS develops emergency weather information to alert the public about imminent dangerous weather conditions.

Isn't it rather strange that on 11/9 (reverse 9/11) that in the middle of the week, and in the middle of the day, that all communications will go down ?

I for one will have all of my Tv's, radios, computers, etc shut off from 1:30 till 3:00 pm. There is no way of knowing what they will send over the transmission that will effect a person's mind and body. What if they could send out a pulse of some sort that kills. Just a thought.

But I wouldn't leave hypnotic transmissions out either.

I think the curious aspect of this is the "national" part.

The country is huge, and the idea of a "national" event is next to nil based on past history. Katrina wasn't national, 911 wasn't national, heck ww2 wasn't national. The suggestion is that we should be prepared for all things - including a nationwide event, what exactly is an "all things" type of event that would require the use of this system? I have been in the area of every major quake in CA in the last 40 years, and this system wasn't useful at all - not one bit. So I fail to really see how "in the event of a NATIONWIDE event, how this is going to be useful.

Maybe it might help of those "in the know" would enlighten the plebes on the site as to what the foreseen national event will be that this kind of system will be a needed tool. Would it have been useful when NATO invaded Libya? Is that the kind of thing?

Truthfully, I think the test is BS, another major scaremongering effort to keep the public in a constant state of "the sky is falling." we are assaulted everyday by: car alarms, backing-up-truck alarms, sirens, panic newscasts, and on and on and on and to perform a nationwide panic alert is a nice bump in the fear inducing efforts.
