You can follow it live at KOGO Mediaplayer - it's pretty massive - 1.4 million without power. Early reports of explosions, military personnel supposedly recalled. Authorities being pretty vague (no surprise there). You can also follow SDGE on twitter here.

(CNN) Authorities were investigating extensive power outages in southern California, Arizona and Mexico on Thursday that left more than 1 million customers without power, caused traffic jams and prompted at least one county to activate its emergency operations center.
San Diego Gas & Electric said the problem appeared to have originated in Arizona. At least 1.4 million customers were without power, the utility said.

Is city power essential for cell phone service??? Im not sure, If not thats strange the power and cell phone service would go out at the same time.

Yes...loss of power will equal loss of cell phone due to the cell phones relying on microwave towers for routing/relaying calls. Old school home phones plugged directly into jacks (NOT cordless phones) are NOT affected by blackout/power loss conditions. My wifes family lives 15 miles from PB in San Diego, CA, and everything is dark there so suffice it to say PB is dark also so if you are trying to reach family there via cell phone...ain't gonna happen i'm afraid, but I am sure everything is okay for now but good luck on reaching them I hope they okay.

No, it's not. It's heat related folks. Grid is taxed and shut down. 100+ degree temps on an already taxed grid, and then you throw in millions of homes and businesses blasting AC at full blast all day long. Grid shuts down. It happens. Just a shame it happened to so many people this time.

It could be cyberwar. It very well could be.
We are vulnerable and Iran is mad about stuxnet, and it is at a time they could say, well, it wasn't us, it was that x-class, or at least tell their citizens that.

I'm not saying 100% sure it is, but there is NO WAY I'd rule it out, if I were in charge, esp, since Arizona is blaming CA, and CA is saying that arizona had 2 main connections - lines- down. Everyone is blaming everyone. I don't like THAT. THAT looks like cyberwar to me. I'd at least consider it a possibility.

Yes, and that is what a cyber attack on the grid would LOOK like.

It would be very hard to TELL it wasn't a rolling blackout. It would have to be investigated.

And having experienced recent prolonged powyer outages... Ice becomes a commodity quickly. Also, Generators will sky rocket, and Batteries... You can't have enough batteries. Also, for charging Cell phones, the car inverters sold at Radio Shack quickly became a commodity for those of us without generators. Hopefully it won't last long, but this is why our Government has been Telling us to ... BE READY!!!

Candles for light
If you have the solar yard lights, those can be brought in at night for a gentle night light... Just enough that you don't bump your knee on the coffee table.

GASOLINE... can't believe I forgot to mention that one. If you can find a gas pump that doesn't require power to operate. Here, it took our stations several hours to figure out how to do business without power. They finally figured it out and they would let 2 people in the store at a time. It was crazy!

The Live press conference by the Utility dept stated it is the main feeder lines from the North and from the South. But this explains only San Diego, not Arizona or Detroit?

The xflare has not HIT yet.

And IRan said that they thought if the hit the US grid, it would hurt us economically.

The radio link that was posted above is very good. Thanks for that link~

I always like when the power goes out. People come out of their houses and actually talk to each other. I have had some great conversations with neighbors I never knew existed during power outages. The reaction of many people in a power outage is quite hilarious to me. They stumble out onto their porch and look around for other people coming outside. When they see you they ask the obvious: "Did your power go out too?" People are hilarious.
