Compelling argument. However here in the U.S. cops are corrupt. In my home town a kid got caught burglarizing someone's home and he went to jail in my county. The first day the kid was in the county jail, his jailers took him into isolation and strangled him to death and then hanged him back in his cell to make it look like he commited suicide. The medical examiner figured it out and his jailers were sentanced to prison for murder. They got justice, but it doesnt bring the dead boy back. His parents have lost a son and the town has never forgotten. To this day the cops in our town travel in 2's or 3's because they are afraid we will kill them and they are right to be afraid because his jailers were cops because the county jail here is run by the sherrifs department.

In San Fransico recently, a cop murdered a guy on a transit train because the guy took a leak on the train floor. In another town a cop beat up a 17 year old girl because he was trying to take her 19 year old friend into custody and she was between him and her friend. When she inquired why the cop wanted to take her in he cold cocked her right in the face with a hay maker, no warning or anything he just busted her right in the face. The girls were black too and the guy just went on a free 2 week paid vacation and went back to work like it was nothing.

Police Brutality in the US is getting worse all the time. I don't trust anyone that hides behind a badge and can commit crimes and get away with it scot free, while anyone else would go to jail.

The US and UK are two completely different countries so its pointless to information from one in relation to issues in the other. And besides had the daughter not taken part in the rioting she wouldn't have been in a position to go to jail and have potentially terrible things happen to her, sure it sucks and probably weighs heavy on the mother's conscious but she can't really do much about her adult daughter's actions other than attempt to make it right by allowing the justice system of the country to do its job and hold the daughter accountable.

To address the point that some made that the mother should have dealt out punishment rather than involving the authorities I would be wary of this kind of thinking because from there its a hop and a skip to vigilante justice which is often an oxymoron to begin with.

Thats about the dumbest thing i've ever heard. Corruption knows no nationality. It's not pointless when theres a moral to the story.

I guess it all really depends on the nature of the riots. A lot of people will say "it's just a bunch of scum bag criminals" but others (including the rioters themselves) will claim it has something to do with their standards of living and the way the Government treats them. I think it's really just a bit of both. Some people are pissed off and some people just want to steal things. Some people may even want to do a bit of both. It's a very complicated situation and it annoys me to see so many people who don't even live there trying to generalize it and twist the facts, as if they understand everything about every country without even needing to be there. These are just the initial sparks of a much larger flame that is yet to ignite. Tensions are high and soon or later something is going to give big time. Just be prepared for when that time comes. We all know you are scared and constant b**ching wont help.

This whole post had absolutely NOTHING to do with the OP and what the topic was about...........your opinion on the riots is not the issue.........

My parents would never do that. As a family you are supposed to ban together and help eachother in bad times. I don't care what type of point she was trying to prove, but this kind of punishment is excessive. Her momm could have ruined her life by getting her a record and actually getting the media into it. When I have kids I would never turn them in to try to prove a point or "punish" them like this. I understand that she was trying to be a good citizen but I just lost all resect for that mother.

exactly how i feel. this was a foolish thing to do on the mother's part. if you're going to punish them, do it yourself, don't bring in the police.

the mother has now permanently alienated her daughter by robbing her future. how her daughter has nothing productive to do but participate in another riot.

What part of she robbed her own future are you guys NOT understanding? They had her on video anyway if she HADNT have turned her in it was gonna be done ANYWAY

If she was worried about her future she shouldnt have broken the law.........

What is wrong with you people

Do you know how many people have been on camera looting during this riot? The odds of her being recognized an turned in are very low If she didn't already have a record. Her mom just ruined her future and set her up for more failure.

i doubt they would have positively identified her.

her parents could have come up with a suitable punishment without taking away everything. now she'll face a fine, jail time, and who knows what else. does she deserve it? sure, but now i guarantee you the next time the riots come around, she will be involved again.

i'm happy the riots happened. they made the world realize that citizens have power. misused and abused in this instance, but real power nonetheless. give them a cause, and the government could be overthrown.

Loads of scumbags answering this one.. Anyone who would turn their kid into the cops over something like this(crimes to turn children over to the cops: murder, pedophilia, rape/sex crimes, high treason[depends though], slavery/slave trafficking, kidnapping, child abuse) should be sterilized.

Might come across as harsh sounding but such sadistic and evil people need to be removed from the gene pool and what better way then sterilization.

What she should of done: Grill the heck out of her daughter(find out who exactly she hurt), then grab her kid by the back of the neck to the shop's she helped vandalize and make her work off some of the debt incurred from the vandalism.

Her mother did the right thing

This girl knew she was an ambassador and took part in the rioting regardless. As a mother myself I do not want someone like that being an ambassador for my children period. There's a lot of people from bad backgrounds that do not get sucked into this "its ok to riot and loot" criminal mentality,me included. We need to start setting better examples for our children. Its just not enough in this day and age having good law abiding parents when celebrities and sports people and high figures are getting away with horrible things and still have all the money and rewards, what do you think it teaches the youth? nothing good that's what

I'm really surprised that some of the people on this thread would'nt mind this girl that might have became someone their child would look up too if her mum never told on her? so sad.

Under a criminal rule, remaining in your house during a revolt is being complicit in the crime, even though you are not profiteering from it.

All thanks to her MOTHER'S TREASON and State repression of a REVOLT against this criminal order

You are deeply deluded if you think riots in England have anything to do with a "revolt" against the system. Destroying small businesses and looting HELPS the corporations and justifies expansion of the police state. Why do you think the system allowed them to riot for so long? Because they will benefit from the riots. The thugs do not want change. They just want new HD TV.

Kudos to the mother for doing the right thing.

Way to add more fuel to the fire.
I got into trouble when I was a teen, like most of us have *maybe not a riot, but you know.... though if there was a riot taking over my city when I was 16, you bet I woulda been right in there.* and though it pained my mother, she would never have turned her back on me and threw me to the dogs. She tried her best to help *with out getting the police involved* and in the end I turned out fine.

Just stupid teenage bullsh*t that is a part of growing up.
I'm older now and know better, but, again... that's a part of growing up an angsty kid.

I wonder if she talked to her daughter first before turning her in.. like gave her the choice to turn herself in, or if she just snitched her out without the girl realizing what was going on?

My parents told me if I ever did anything illegal (above the minor everyday things like a pirated DVD or going 2 miles over the speed limit) that they would report me... THEN try to help me.

I am 19, if I get myself into trouble it is NOBODIES fault but my own, and my parents should absolutely 100% report me for it unless there are exceptional circumstances. And these riots do not qualify, for those saying the rioters said it was to do with their living conditions... yes they did, but did you watch them say it?

Some of them didn't even know who was in government, they didn't even know who they said they were protesting.
And I'm sorry but the benefits you receive in this country can be lived on, I watched a television programme yesterday about a family with I think 4 children still living in the house, the mother works as a teaching assistant and the father lost his job due to depression. But refuses to take benefits. They make every single penny count, the thugs rioting however are too preoccupied with their phones and clothes wasting the money they are given.

If they can't afford the basics it is their own fault for spending that money elsewhere.

This mother has done the correct thing, she has shownher daughter that she must pay for the crimes she commits, if the mmother hadn't turned her in what sort of precedent would that be setting? The daughter would have been told that she can get away with anything, sure the mother could have said thats not true and that if the daughter commited a serious crime she would report her, but why believe it? I'm sure her mother had already told her when she was a child that commiting a crime would result in going to court, but by not reporting the daughter she would have shown that to be false... this isn't bad parenting, it's amazing parenting and probably one of the hardest things the mother has ever done.

I don't want to live in a country where someone can get away with breaking into my house and stealing things I have worked hard for, or things which have meaning to me, simply because the parents thought "oh no that would be snitching I better just make my adult daughter sit on the naughty step." (Yes I know that isn't the crime the daughter committed but it IS the treatment many in this thread are saying is suitable".

"1984" was a book. 1984 came and passed...lets get back to reality. Question: when did we start believing total works of fiction are real?

...ah, we always probably did.

I have no idea why people think this is a bad thing. Good parenting is not dead after all.
If the mother had not and they both ended up hauled to court like some other *savoury* spectacles we've seen over the past few days where the mother is telling everyone outside the court to "# off" would you condone that? That's precisely what's gone wrong with British society. Desrepectful scumbags breeding disrespectful scumbags.
