Do you mean me, or the United States of America?!

You see, this is the problem we're facing here. Americans can't seem to take a joke at thier own expense anymore, but they will again some day in this i have perfect faith, since the best material for good humor tends to arise from our own prior ignorance once fully understood in the clear light of reason.

Out of all fairness to our American friends the lack of self deprecating humor at the absurdity of it all can be attributed to something other than egocentric narcissism. The reason they can no longer laugh at themselves is also because deep down they understand that their predicament isn't entirely of their own doing, but instead is the result of being victimized by an extreme abuse of power, and that's not funny.

America is a great country, and the American people are great people. It's the government and institutions that are the problem, and America isn't the only country where the government and institutions are the problem.
There are plenty of people in America who aren't the brightest, most reasonable, most rational. The the majority of the people are good. Plenty of other countries have their 'duds' as well.

"You see my kind of loyalty was loyalty to one's country, not to its institutions, or its office holders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to; institutions are extraneous, they are its mere clothing, and clothing can wear out, become ragged, cease to be comfortable, cease to protect the body from winter, disease, and death. To be loyal to rags, to shout for rags, to worship rags, to die for rags--this is loyalty to unreason, it is pure animal; it belongs to monarchy, was invented by monarchy; let monarchy keep it."

-Mark Twain

I think theres definitely something wrong when you have toddlers being put on anti-depressants, everyone is receiving therapy and analysing and reasoning with every aspect of their life, children going without medication for proper health issues because it's too expensive.

The problem with America? There are plenty and most have been stated.

I will add this one: To many people, both inside the US, and obviously outside of the US (as is apparent to me in this thread) believe the world revolves around the US. This, as pointed out by a few people is the beginning of the real issue.. corporatism and globalization.

Another bash the USA thread huh? Very original of you. I guess it's natural to hate the best, especially when they're right next door.

USA is in trouble and only the people can change that! But in order to make the change then the people have to do it different from the past and just going out to vote will only maintain the status quo and TPTB control. The US folk need to try another way like they did over veitnam. vote withn their feet an down tools and come out and protest for real change. clear out congress and start a fresh!!! oh and amend the loaded constitution thats stacked against the people!!!!!!!!!!!

Voting Bush back into power doesn't make those who voted for him "bad" people, if that's the angle you're trying to get at.
There's nothing wrong with being deceived. Lots of people are deceived. Sure, it sucks, but it's not really intentional. No-one WANTS to be deceived, but it can happen. Just like no-one WANTS to stub their toe on a door jamb. It hurts, but it can happen.
So, there's nothing wrong with people doing what they feel is right, or just.

Bad people are people who are intentionally ignorant, and those type of people do exist in this country, as well as every other country. The majority of people aren't intentionally ignorant, they're just ignorant because they don't know enough for one reason or another. That's forgivable, and in no way makes them "bad".

Cheers.

What I mean by "great" is "great".

I lived in Canada for 4 years. My father was stationed at a joint Air Force base and worked alongside Canadians, as well as some other Americans.

Canada is a great country as well, but it has it's share of dummies, just like America does.
I don't start threads titled "Is Canada full of "dummies? What's wrong with Canada?" over it though.

Cheers.

I think it's fair to say that greed and corruption from above is preventing America from reaching its true potential. I'm a proud Canadian...but I'm proud to call Americans my pals as well.

You mean they were "deceived" after Bush joked about WMD in Iraq by searching for them under his table in the Oval Office?

Ahhh, the angle insinuating that Americans are bad because they -DID- hear that joke Bush made and still voted for him.
It would appear that you personally know most Americans, and they personally informed you that they DID see that joke and still decided to vote. You got me. Most Americans are bad.

Cheers.

I personally don't know most Americans nor does anyone else, American or otherwise. I go by people's actions in determining whether I would consider them good or bad. My definition of good most certainly doesn't include people who go around murdering and plundering hapless people, which is exactly what I consider the invasion of Iraq was all about.

As for Americans being "deceived" into supporting the invasion of Iraq, the same people who "deceived" them left no one in any doubt about their lying about their reasons for the invasion, the Bush joke being only an example of it. When Bush was returned to power majority of the Americans declared exactly the kind of people they are. Those that defend such people and invent fantastic excuses for their actions are not much better than them either.

I am not interested in convincing anyone that Americans are not good people, I know exactly what kind of people would call them good.

Those people are retarded for saying that. Doesn't represent Americans anyways. In fact, if people think as Americans as a whole, it's called stereotyping.

You know people like you cause ignorance. The fact is you are pacifist, nothing else. Are you saying that US and it's allies raped and murdered a lot of Iraqi civilians than insurgets? Most of the Iraqi casualties were caused by Al-Qaeda Insurgents than U.S. troops. Get your facts straight before you call our troops murderer. That's why Iraqi civilians sided with the US than Al-Qaeda insurgents. Heck you probably never been to military operations in Iraq. I know a lot of US troops coming back from Iraq trying to protect civilians from insurgents.
