There are just so many possible angles here to cover. I could go into a long winded analysis about what I think is wrong with the USA, from the perspective of an outsider looking in, but I'm beginning to realize that I'm not neccessarily the smartest or most erudite member here at ATS (yes, I'm beginning to get over my infantile, narcissistic, megalomaniacal, grandiosity), so what are your thoughts..

Is the USA "mentally ill"? What's wrong with the USA?

And more importantly, who is responsible? And can it be fixed? Can "Humpty Dumpty" be put back together again..?

Are we bearing witness to the fall of an empire?

It's not about me, or where i'm from, but just for the record I'm from Canada, yes Canada of the Stephen Harper Conservative Government who once stated that the US Republican Conservative movement, under the leadership of Bush/Cheney "are a light to the world"..

In what way do you see the USA as being mentally ill? You must have an opinion, otherwise why make this thread?

No I wouldn't say mentally ill.

The government is just greedy and self centered and they all have their own agenda they are working on and money and power is a big part of it.

The citizens fall into a large range of people.......

On one end you have people (like me) who is pretty self sufficient and wants no hand outs and wants the government to stay 99% out of my life. We do for ourselves, handle our own problems and like it that way.

The other end of the scale is people who are lazy, don't want to work and expects the government to take care of them through government run social entitlement programs and believe (truly) that they deserve it and it's owed to them.

Then there are the majority that fall somewhere in between. People want services provided by the government and don't seem to realize that those cost money.

No, most here are not crazy. Just lazy, dependent & not very motivated.

Hell, maybe I am crazy for wanting to be left alone to live my life without interference. Maybe I should want to get a check every month for doing nothing......

Two words: Mass Brainwashing. From the day of birth, people in this country are taught that they are sooooo lucky that they live in the free USA and that anyplace else would be horrible. Elementary kids swear an oath to the state called the pledge of allegiance every day. Everyone believes serving the military is the highest thing you can aspire to, when in fact it is absolutely despicable to support the elite NWO agenda. Media propaganda is all-encompassing. We are zombies. We need help.

I think USA has become lazy more than ill, as for me being a latino is kind of weird to see riots everywhere except in USA. Its because they are more disciplined people? no way!, its just plain lazyness. The majority of them can eat whatever they want and buy fancy cars. Its hard to ask to them to riot right now since they are the empire. But... AA from AAA, its just the beginning

Here's an interesting quote that may be applicable

“Nationalism is our form of incest, is our idolatry, is our insanity. ''Patriotism'' is its cult. It should hardly be necessary to say, that by ''patriotism'' I mean that attitude which puts the own nation above humanity, above the principles of truth and justice; not the loving interest in one's own nation, which is the concern with the nation's spiritual as much as with its material welfare /never with its power over other nations. Just as love for one individual which excludes the love for others is not love, love for one's country which is not part of one's love for humanity is not love, but idolatrous worship.”
~ Erich Fromm quotes (German born American social Philosopher and Psychoanalyst, 1900-1980)

In my view, although it's apparent that Obama has been in bed with Wall Street and the Fed, Bush/Cheney ruined the heart and soul of the United States of America, and we in Canada, we've never really had the opportunity to mourn the loss of our once proud and great friend and neighbor to the south. We used to love the USA, but now, well, we just don't know what to make of it, and Canadian ex pats who live there now, are even more bewildered by the whole spectacle which they describe in surreal terms.

What happened?

America does have it's priorities mixed up, The rich are greedy and have too much sway over the legislative branch of the gov. Also, we have WAY to much FU%^king welfare..My mom had assistance from the gov. when my fatherdied when i was very young, BUT, as soon as she grad. college to become an RN she got off assistance..People just live their entire lifes having babies and getting a check..its sickening really. Thr middle class foots the bill for the entire country..and we are getting pissed..

Man there are a lot of reasons but one I see is being over worked and underpaid! So many come home and instead of getting involved with making a difference, they want to numb out in front of the boob tube, neglecting their family, their future, and their country. We are a bunch of slaves to economic servitude it seems! Then we are constantly bombarded with sensationalism and commercialism that keeps a carrot of unobtainable and worthless items consistently displayed everywhere, feeding selfishness. 50 hours a week at less than 10.00 is just crazy. Yes, people can better themselves to get more, but some just don't have the time to give up, and when they do they become robots of productivity, absent of spirit. Boohoo, I know, but this is how I see it, today anyways.
Of course there is over medication, uncertainty about the future, kids being born from senseless and irresponsible parents, desperation feeds selfishness... the list goes on and on and I might add it seems we are hypnotized as well. Hell in a handbasket comes to mind, and I feel it is too late to change for the better.

Yes, but what precisely IS "the condition", aside from economic malaise, which is secondary really to the country's spiritual or psychological condition as a whole? Or is it entirely inappropriate to view the nation as a collective, since there really is not such thing as a "group" only individuals..?

After living out of the country for several years I can attest to this being very true!
"They" certainly start at a young age indoctrinating the youth with the idea that the USA is the greatest and nothing else compares!
Then if your lucky enough to break free for a bit, you find out other countries have it going on!

No place is perfect, but the USA is definitely the kid with the most problems who makes up for it by overcompensating and acting like they are just the best thing since sliced bread!
