I had to go with Charlatans, because that is by far imho the most damaging aspect.

Although I agree with you whole-heatedly IRM, it is in a general sense a combination of many of the factors listed in that section.

Staying true to my signature, I also chose Charlatans. The most disquieting aspect of UFOlogy is the Cult-Like entities it has spawned such as The Raelian Church, Ashtar Command, Galactic Federation of Light, CSETI, Scientology and The Aetherius Society to name but a few. While a random hoax has limited ability to permanently impact ones life, these cults have the potential to do untold damage to the individuals psyche and grip on reality.

That's odd.

The survey appeared really well balanced and gave room for people to say it was ET or Military Tech, or Hoax even.

I thought it was pretty cool.
No,
If it was balanced there would be room also for "Unknown" as well as those three.

Don't forget Heaven's Gate. They are a perfect example of a charlatan creating a cult and leading all of it's members into doom.

I have done some research about them several times and it is amazing how absurd and insane their claims are. Also what is more frightening, is that there are folks who simply do not ever question things they are told, and will believe anything simply because they want to have a sense of "belonging" and feel important.

The whole way they use fear and lies to control people, etc.

The surveys are really interesting and engaging, keep 'em coming!

Members should compile a list of possible survey topics.

I also chose the charlatans as the most destructive force in "Ufology". Nothing else has come close to maintaining the rolling eyes, snickers, and walking away from the subject by the very people needed to research it.

But, as long as the credulous are willing to lap up the horse hockey as true the charlatans will always be around to sell another book or ticket to a speech.

I took the survey, now waiting for the results. No complaints here, and I thought the choices were "interesting". Good job, S.O.

What a sad excuse for a poll - most researchers view aliens as interdimensional and not extraterrestrial at all!

my answer to that one was people who blindly debunk every single sighting no matter
what the evidence suggest lol ,would have also went with the Charlatan option too

Not knowing the details of two of the specific incidences I could not honestly give any opinion; however was forced to choose something, so picked "may be extraterrestrial".

This will skew your results. There should be a "don't know" option for such situation-specific questions.

Has anyone heard of the avrocar? It was a VTOL saucer made by nazi Germany, refined in the cold war by USA and Russia. Many people thought it was a spacecraft.

Back in Roswell new mexico when the Russians were first testing it, they had three deformed children on board dressed up as aliens. It crashed and that was Russia mocking America saying "even retarded children can get past your air defences" it was a huge blow to America if news got out, so they played it off on a weather balloon, people being dumb believed it was aliens, some making entire belief systems out of this event.

so aliens aren't visiting, yea I know many people are pissed or questioning the story's credibility but I assure you it's quite true. If you need the idea that beings are visiting, ever think they were from the future? The common concept of the alien grey being our descendant from the far future. They would seem like aliens to us, as we to cavemen

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to take this survey. I dont normally participate in surveys but this was fun.

The questions about the specific events (with the reference links) are hard for me... as I haven't put in the time to study the specific cases properly. An option such as 'I'm not familiar enough to decide.' would be nice...

Also, for the question about the greatest threat to UFOlogy, how come there isn't a choice such as "Refusal of the academic community to take seriously Air Force, Government, and Astronaut testimony."

Thats what I think is the greatest threat.

i started to participate but as i got to the end i had to hit the cancel option...
While i felt that the questions presented were legitimate it was the lack of options available that i felt incorrectly
represented my views on the matter.
I also have to agree with those who fet that multiple answers should have been available,
I thought as a solution, perhaps in future polls there coul be a "write in" option where the poll taker could give a more accurate presentation of thier ideas? Not sure how that would effect the poll itself or if it would even be an easy addition, but i am sure the responces would be just as interesting to read

I have an open mind, and I accept the fact that it is possible. It is quite egotistical and illogical to assume that we are the only ones, and nothing else is 'out there.' However, having no actual personal proof, causes it to be impossible to reach a definitive conclusion of- 'Yes! they are here," or 'No!! They are not."

I believe that our solar system and the Earth has been, and currently is being studied or otherwise visited by one or more extraterrestrial species.

Do you agree with that statement?

To answer this question honestly, I do not feel that 'neutral' is an accurate response, thus leaving me to state that I disagree. That disagreement could easily be misconstrued as being the same as saying, "I do not believe that it is possible." That is just not true, because I do.

Same goes for #2.
The only honest answer that I can give, is 'none,' because I have no proof. I definitely believe it is possible, and I believe that it is likely for some to actually be of an extraterrestrial nature. I just cannot give a definitive 'yes,' because I have not definitely seen it, and do not definitely know.

  • Further down, it was nice to see the word 'maybe' in the responses. That word is very important, and was needed.

[color=CFECEC]IF there actually are extraterrestrial beings visiting this rock, then there would be a very high probability that....

One or more terrestrial governments either posses or are aware of the existence of advanced extraterrestrial technology and are proactively attempting to cover-up the knowledge of intelligence beyond the earth.

Once again, without knowing it to be true, then one cannot know if there actually is any information about this, that is being withheld.

[color=6CC417]Just my opinions. They do not matter, but at times I choose to share them anyways. This was one of those times.

Time to return ATS to its roots
Was this web site formed to debate to possible cover up of Alien existence ?

I have a problem with the new survey. There was no option to affirm that these phenomena do in fact exist but are inter-dimensional craft/entities and not extraterrestrial. Reason being, I agree with the conclusions of Jacques Vallée Ph.D. and Dr. J. Allen Hynek that these craft appear to be inter-dimensional and not extraterrestrial.
