I think you misunderstood my statement.
I'm not going to trust what anyone tells me... I will research and decide for myself. If you knew me, you'd know I'm not a fearmonger. I believe Elenin is a comet with no possibility of doing any damage to Earth whatsoever. I haven't fallen for anything.

Since Elenin will be above the ecliptic when it crosses Earth's orbit it is not at all certain that we will pass through its tail(s).

But IF we pass through its tail(s)? What do you think that can happen?

The Earth often passes through comet tails, and nothing ever happens. And, consider what comprises a comet's tail... gases and particulate from the comet, itself. The comet is about 5 km across, and the tail is hundreds of thousands, even millions, of kilometers long. Since the material comes from such a small object and it's spread out through such a massive region in space, Earth passing through the tail of a comet is pretty much like passing through nothing at all. There might be a slight increase in meteor activity...maybe. And maybe some other almost unnoticeable atmospheric effects, due to interaction with (extremely diffuse) gases. But, most likely, nothing of any significance would happen.

And, again, Earth won't pass through Elenin's tail, so it's a moot point, really.

I understand the different types of comet tails and how they act. Perhaps you can help me here in distinguishing the difference between a comet's debris tail and its orbital path. When does a comet's tail cease to be a tail and becomes debris in its orbital path?

As you know, a tail is a temporary occurrence formed when a comet approaches the sun. As such, the tail is gaseous, and it always faces away from the sun (and, so, is rarely contained to the comet's orbital path).
The comet's debris field, on the other hand, is a permanent particulate/rocky trail (not a tail) that follows the comet's orbital path.
That's the essential difference.

I've been searching for the article that states Elenin denied having discovered this planet. Can't find it. Problem is: I dont remember the source but I think it must have been one I trust, if not I would have dismissed it and I wouldn't have remembered. I only found a few articles about this, but they are not from a source I trust so I wont even link them. So maybe he didn't say it and was it only in the wishful mind of some people who are afraid of this comet. My apologies for saying something I cannot back up

I was really hoping for this not to be a "friend of my uncle's cousin" type of source, but of course this IS ATS...

So to sum it up, the last time Earth passed through a comet's tail was back in 1910 with comet Halley. All of the meteor showers have been from debris fields that are in the orbital path from comets that have come through in the past and are not considered part of the original comet's tail like Perseids meteor shower is with comet Swift-Tuttle.

I agree that comets are not simply balls of ice nor dirty snowballs such as the current accepted description tells us but are far more complicated than previously thought. This would also mean that the interaction between comets and the Sun that creates these beautiful and sometimes terrifying tails are also more complicated than previously thought.

However I wouldn't call gravity a "pseudoforce". Gravity has been called a fictitious force but this is due to the action of inertia and not meaning that this real force doesn't exist.

this comet was seen and measured in the 50's ... so why do they claim it is out of view now when its much closer?

The Weather Channel has started showing Disaster Zones in the US. Go to weatherchannel.com. Also, here in NYC for the past couple of years they have been showing a commercial telling people to be prepared and have a survival kit ready. With all of the FEMA camps being built around the country and the government buying up an unbelievable amount of dehydrated food. Interesting stuff! The doomsday naysayers are going to be bugged eyed with dung in their shorts when something does go down.

It is very possible that things could get real bad for us from all of this doomsday stuff culminating on 2012. However this will most likely be due to panic, mass hysteria and ignorance from those that really believe the world is going to end soon. For this reason it is a good idea to be ready and have a plan.

This guy is on it. And the ion tail of the comet points directly away from the Sun. So Sept 27th is when TSHTF if it does, when the comet passes between the Earth and the Sun, and the tail will be pointing directly at us. There is a lot of electricity involved.

Just wait and see. Hopefully nothing will happen. BUT, you all act like you know for sure that nothing will happen. Just remember, so far, in the history of the world, EVERYTHING that everyone "knew" has ALWAYS turned out to be WRONG. It is the height of hubris to think that NOW we are right about everything.

THere is good reason why the ancients always considered comets as harbingers of doom. We shall see in seven weeks.

As far as I know comet Elenin does not transit in front of the Sun from the perspective of Earth. Meaning it will not travel between the Earth and the Sun but will be far below the Earth's orbital plane. The tail will not be pointing at Earth.

However when Venus transits the Sun its ion tail does point towards Earth and has been detected by Earth orbiting satellites. Venus has an ion tail that is over 24 million miles long. This happened back in June, 2004 and will happen again in June 2012. So far so good.
