He wants something reliable, but accurate. He said he wants it to look "bad ass."
Kids these days, huh?

Any who I wanted to buy him an MSAR STG but I don't love him THAT much

Between my father and myself we have more than enough ammo for both calibers so really I just want to find something used and cheap, but still in good condition and not beat to hell.

Cheap meaning under $800...yes I know that's a tall order but I believe in you ATSers! Thanks!

NO he won't be taking it to school with him.
NO he isn't a punk.
NO more trolling.
NO more stupid comments or questions.

Personally, I hate guns...but genuinely appreciate gun-owners. (Wow! What a paradox!)

Assuming anonymity is part of the equation I'd say Gun Show. Forget online...too traceable.

What? Your brother wants a FEMA or ATS agent knocking on his door when TSHTF?

They don't sell used but Cheaperthandirt.com is a good place to start...I've seen them sell brand new S&W AR15s for less than $650 before...

Of course an AK is even cheaper...you could probably find one for less than $400 just by calling and asking the gun shops around your area.

The more I think about buying him an AK the more I think he won't like it. He isn't spoiled or anything but I think he wants more of a black rifle. Thanks I'll look into the site!

I'm honestly not too big on gun shows. Not sure why just never too thrilled...Well considering I'm buying it for him they would come looking for me! Which is perfectly fine except when they come to my house they'll never find me

That's funny. Turn 18, there's selective service, parents counting down to your first apartment or dorm. But let's not forget the guns! I missed that one in home economics and life preparedness class.

Yet, there remains the sad truth that we live in a different time, and self defense is an ultimate requirement.
I can't say that I "like" guns, but I know that there are people alive today who otherwise would have died in a home invasion if they were not prepared.

This is starting to sound like a chick picking out a car.
Forget performance,
Forget functionality,
Forget caliber,

"I want a BLACK one"!!!!

"I want it too LOOK bad ass"!!!

I just bought my son a .22 AR15 look alike.
It "looks" bad ass.

I personally own an AK and it has the original wood furniture. I suppose it doesn't "look" "Bad ass" enough but I
like it because it can take a beating, literally, and still perform. It can get dirty, muddy, sandy and wet, and it will still save my life. The best $500 I have EVER spent.........besides the $500 I spent on 7.62x39 ammo I bought shortly afterwards.

Neither rifle is a good first choice for a new gun owner.

And wanting a rifle because it looks "bad assed" really rubbed me the wrong way. I think maybe he wants it for the wrong reasons.

Any kid that wants a weapon that that looks bad-ass is asking for trouble. He gonna go cruise the high school and show it off to his friends or something?

Yeah - he's right...if looks are really all that matters there are A LOT of badass looking .22 platforms out there...for super cheap (less than $500...some even less than $200).

Plus there isn't a cheaper ammo on the market...you can buy .22 rounds by the bucket-load and still have plenty of cash left over.

Believe it or not he'll be attending Georgia Tech in the fall and is incredibly intelligent. My family is big on hunting and the outdoors so it's not that his heart is in the wrong place or anything. He grew up around guns and we wanted him to wait before he got his own rifle.

Nah he isn't like that....our father was a colonel so we were raised strictly and learned gun safety at a very young age.

Is he bringing the gun to college?

Is that why he want's it to look bad-ass?

Not to derail or berate your post, but I would advise you save/spend any extra money necessary to buy or build your own QUALITY AR. A defensive/offensive battle rifle is nothing you want to skimp out on. If you are looking for something to target and "plink" around with I would go to a local shop and buy one of those new mass produced .22LR AR rifles. Ammo is INCREDIBLY cheap compared to .223/5.56 and you can fire it at just about any indoor range.

If he wants the "cool" factor, these things look like most any short-barreled AR variant I've seen, up to and including the HK-4xx series.

Yea no offense but the guy that shot up Texas University in 1966 was a marine and knew gun safety too.

Not implying anything about your brother but someone who wants a gun that looks bad-ass and is going to college makes me think bad things.

Look guys he isn't some punk ass kid and he isn't taking it to school with him. He wants it for all the right reasons and he deserves to be rewarded. He graduated third in his class out of 500 kids. I can honestly say that I was no where near third haha. He was talking about the .22 SCAR knock off but I'm not sure if he'd really be happy with it...anyone ever shot it?

My brother isn't some nut case. Thanks for the history lesson though. I couldn't care less about a marine that has nothing in common with my brother.

Understandable but an irrational fear. The United States of America, home of the free, land of the brave.

I haven't...but I've shot a number of .22s and I gotta tell you there isn't a whole lot of difference once you spend more than $200 on one...
They really don't have enough recoil to give the gun a different feel just because of platform differences.
Also, because of the low velocity the round inherently doesn't have much range so accuracy ends up being about the same across the different platforms as well.
Speaking of accuracy, it's "good enough" for short range plinking but he may have trouble hitting anything farther than 200 yards.
