I can't recall a movie giving me nightmares, but I'll share what I think is one of the most creepiest movie I've ever seen. I've seen loads of creepy movies but the ending to this one is a real shocker. The film is Canadian and in French but you can get an English dubbed version.

7.0/10 on IMDB

Fifteen years after a horrifying experience of abduction and prolonged torture, Lucie embarks on a bloody quest for revenge against her oppressors. Along with her childhood friend, Anna, who also suffered abuse, she quickly descends, without hope, into madness and her own delusions. Anna, left on her own begins to re-experience what Lucie did when she was only twelve years old.

Here's one review:

this film is as terrifying as anything ever released. it takes events from modern headlines and carries them to horrible, but utterly believable extremes. performances, photography, editing, score, sound design, direction are all spot on.

i live in a neighborhood where people literally get stabbed in the street, and this film scared the hell out of me. it creates a tension that is almost unbearable, and then it breaks your heart. the genius of this film is the degree to which you empathize and grow to love the protagonist(s.)

i was skeptical when i was told about how people supposedly fainted in the theater when they saw it. after watching this film, i absolutely believe it. there is one scene in particular that made me dizzy.

don't watch it alone, and don't watch it if you think horror films are supposed to make you laugh. this film will make you cry.

If movies gave me nightmares, this would be the one to give them to me.

If you like creepy-as-hell drama/horror/thriller films this should be at the top of your list!

for me it was stephen kings IT, still scarred to this day, full on coulrophobia(fear of clowns, ch sp?) led to an incident at an ex partners house that i never lived down. lived in the country where there had been a spate of break ins and i was leaving her residence late at night, heard footsteps running behind me and naturally got ready to defend myself against one of the local lawless.. I turned to see a clown running straight at me... I remember nothing more but apparently i collapsed against my car wheel and full on shut-down... took me about half hour to come round... needless to say, everyone else thought that my ex's step father was hilarious.

Dawn of the Dead. Watched it when i was about 8. I have very long, vivid, detailed and extremely intense zombie apocalypse dreams to this day, i am now 38. literally 100's of these dreams.

OMG I forgot one.
Has to be one of the freakiest horror films I've ever seen (Well apart from the film*Mum & Dad*)

I daren't even show you the trailer for it here, you'll just have to find it on youtube.
The movie is called *FEED*. I lay awake for two hours after thinking wtf, then fell into a nightmarish slumber. The damn film still jars me to this day but no matter how disturbing it is the film is purest awesome - the ending is awesome,... too many awesomes...oh well...AWESOME!!!

When i was around 12-13 my parents divorced and due to elevated stress levels nightmares were a common thing for a few years. THE WORST i had was I was running in one of the ALIEN spaceships and being chased by hordes of them behind me......blahh i gotta go

I totally forgot about Martyrs until I read your post, and just thinking about it makes me feel sickened and depressed all over again. This movie is beyond scary and not for the faint-hearted. I am a huge fan of horror, but this one was almost too much for me. I do plan on watching it again, but maybe not in this decade.

The cube movies.

People kidnapped in there sleep and taken to a huge cube made of thousands of small cube rooms that all have plausible deathtraps in them except for 1 cube that is connected. Well, they're not exactly nightmares, more like similar dreams of waking up somewhere I don't recognize and having to find a way to survive.

The Shining I snuck into a theatre at 11 years old, on a weekday when no one else was there. I bought soda and popcorn(didn't even touch em') and sat there with my knees to my chest in terror. I was too scared to even leave my seat!

Honorable mention: The Legend Of Boggy Creek, from my neck o the woods, the southern bigfoot. Seems cheesy now, but to a young boy who enjoyed spending time in the woods, it really sceered me yo!

The Evil Dead left me with a few odd dreams too, that creepy lady under the floor and all those promiscuous roots/limbs!

I've never had a nightmare over a movie, but The Exorcist creeps the hell out of me. Someone mentioned Tremors, I used to love that movie! Me and my brother would watch it all school holidays when I was about 10.

If you really wanna be freaked out though, video games are where it's at. Silent Hill 1 and 2 will scare the bejebus out of you. Well Silent Hill 1 might not anymore, because of the ps1 graphics. But SH2....Pyramid head!

Here he is.

And Dead Space was the first thing in years to actually make me jump in fright.

So, yeah try the games for the scares trust me.

Try watching Jaws then go beach

No movie gives me nightmares now, but Jaws, when I watch it then go beach or diving....

It always does the trick. I can just imagine when it came out, that summer

Fear wasn't particularly the thing going through my head the first time I ended up peeking through the closet slats in Silent Hill 2.
It was more along the lines of "WOW kinky git with a big choppa, my kinda guy"

God, some are really easily creeped by mainstream crap like Resident Evil, the only creeping thing about this is the cinematography and bad acting.
Yes, some mentioned already the better movies of the last few years like MARTYRS or THE ROAD.
I Watched A SERBIAN FILM recently, but honestly, it was far too campy and i had to giggle more than one time.
It just couldn't decide whether it was supposed to be a satire on the Horror/Porn market or a politcal parabel of the state of contemporary serbia. Whatever, you can give it a shot, its still different from mainsteam crap like SAW or Hostel.

Resident evil 1 was the greatest, always made me jump.

The last house on the left. A true horror film. Shows how brutal and uncompassionate humans can be.

Thanks for your honorable mention of The Legend of Boggy Creek. I agree that some may find it cheesy, especially now, but back when I was a kid it scared the living daylights out of me. We lived in a remote area the country just up the hill from a creek, and I used to lie awake at night listening for the monster rustling in the bushes.

In general, films like this one, Jaws and the Exorcist that are based on true stories are scarier to me than the ones that are completely fictional.
