Yup. There's too much visual perversion that does not appeal to tasteful fashion. Instead the parades get too theatrical and quite humorously playful to any child. What are they trying to prove by wearing bare-bottom leather and gaudy/flashy outfits? If they want true freedom, they should take a second look at their nudity. I'm getting sick. Yes, the butt-less chaps are a hard look to pull off. They make gays look bad.

They would make straights look bad, too.

It's the overt sexuality, more than the gendered-ness of it all, that is a problem for many of us.

Ingrid Bergman could look sexier with her clothes on, than Marilyn Monroe did, with her clothes off.

true story.

I must have misunderstood, I thought marriage was a ceremony usually performed and recognised by the state and a religeous authority, or both.

Don't think any of the religeous handbooks mentioned same sex marriage.

Any way why keep pushing the gay agenda, I could not give 2 hoots what anyone is BUT why ram it down everyones throat.

Get over it, if your gay so what, why do you feel the need to dance around in a tutu

Again, for the record, the majority of cross dressers are married heterosexual men. They are not gay or bi. They are men who like to get in touch with their feminine side. I know, it's hard to envision that a man who dresses up could be straight but that's the reality

You are right! Go to Vegas if you want to see that! Let me warn you away from Key Wests Fantasy Fest. I wonder why heterosexuals would choose to entertain themselves by watching the gay parade?

It is a little like my 12 year old daughter complaining about football playing all day Sunday's. It's so violent and stupid daddy. Here's what I tell the little girl, "change the channel honey."

Because every day is straight pride for you. Last time I checked you could visit your partner in hospital without the worry of their family banning you from visits and not being able to do anything about it. So forgive us if we have one day where we come out to play and celebrate gaining these rights, and continuing to fight for them.

I'd feel safer having my child at a gay pride parade than going camping with Father Doyle that's for sure!!

Sorry, but I doubt you could find a display of deviancy like this featuring heterosexuals let alone one held on a public street with police present and corporate sponsorship to boot.

How about gays and straights stop that disgusting behavior (**my opinion**).

But that's not gonna happen, because there is something called freedom that Americans like bragging about. That freedom will eventually push some across the the edge and hostilities might start. That's one problem with freedom which is why there is so much spending on security by the US government.

It's a parade ---

the military go on parade with their uniforms, majorettes do it too,
there's a carnival parade too,

what's the problem with a gay parade??? Cant they show themselves in ANY form they want to?

else,
shut the blinds

Don't see any issue with the Gay Pride Parades...

It is only a bit of fun..

and the local Gay Pride Parade (in Britains gay capital) still does not match the size or scale of other local parades.

Nor can they (the Gay Pride Parade) match the others for dressing up fun

I thank you for your response....I didn't realize how tough it is for you all...if I offended you...I apologize...I didn't mean to....I am learning. I truly believe in my heart that love is love.....between 2 people....and yes you should have the same rights.

Let me tell you about the gay pride parade that I attended this year (Minneapolis, June 26). It was attended by an estimated 400,000 people. Most of the floats and assemblages were churches (United Church of Christ, United Methodist, Lutheran, and Jewish), corporate sponsors (US Bank, Wells Fargo, Best Buy, Macy's), local businesses like pizza and coffee shops, radio stations, etc. that wished to express support and gratitude for their gay clientele.

There were lots of politicians (Governor Mark Dayton and Senator Al Franken walked the route, shaking hands, along with many other state and local officials and candidates).

Then there were the various support and activist groups, like PFLAG, youth organizations, gay social organizations, a gay marching band, AIDS groups, Human Rights Campaign, and political groups supporting marriage.

Amongst this, there were a handful of popular drag queens and assorted people just expressing themselves and having a good time. A few floats with scantily-clad dancing boys.

I saw exactly two men in gold bikinis. One was promoting a local production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show (he was hot), and the other was in a group of people in Rocky Horror costumes (he was not). I did see two men apparently just walking down the street in their underwear. There was nothing I would personally define as lewdness, as the area was packed with families and young people, and just about everyone was respectful of that.

In short, it was kind of a bore if you were looking for titillation. It was, in fact, an extremely positive and joyous celebration. I haven't seen so many happy people (and their dogs, for some reason) together in a long time.

So, if the Minneapolis celebration is any indication, people are seriously overreacting to a perception of lewdness based on a small fraction of participants who were reveling in the freedom to express themselves and their sexuality in a supportive and accepting environment. I didn't see much to be ashamed of or alarmed about.

Oh, and by the way, aren't all chaps ass-less? Kind of a redundancy, but fun to say.

Funny. I'm not really that left. Although I am definitely not a social conservative - - in the realm of dictating how others should live their life.

But politics is one thing I do not discuss on ATS.

Regardless, still hadnt seen you for a while.

hope all is well.

I always wondered how all the S&M / Bondage stuff was allowed in.

I always thought these looked more like a "Freak Pride" rally.

Right - - gay is not a Group Think.

As a whole they have one thing in common - - attraction to same gender. Beyond that they are as different as any and all people who inhabit this world.

The problem is - - you can't closet the ones you don't agree with.

But the question remains....

How did the freaks get in?

If the gays want to get a fair shake, they need to use the media better.

If any of the goof balls show up, make them unwelcome and VERY uncomfortable.

(that may be difficult to do to the s&m folks LOL)

If gays want to be treated as normal, act normal (like my friends). Just because someone is gay doesnt mean they have to be a freak or a screaming drag queen in public. I"m from Texas but dont run around in oversized boots and a size 50 Stetson. "Hey, did any yall know I'M FROM TEXAS!"
thats an image.

Its like "little" guys that have HUGE MASSIVE TRUCKS! Overcompentsation.

It just makes folks

I'd say a minority group that has been forced to live on the fringe of society develops its own sub-culture which might need to go to extremes because of circumstance.

Forced to publicly live a straight life to prevent abuse and persecution - - then escaping to the "fringe" with one purpose in mind - - same gender sex. Which would be the root of it appearing to be a desperate and extreme over-the-top sex culture. Which it partly is - - but also needed to be.

Would gays be this way if they had been accepted by society? I doubt it. Well some might - but maybe not so much in public display.

I've read studies - - that say the more gays are accepted by main stream society - - the more they become it. Many gays want the same thing straights have. Marriage - family - career - home in suburbia.

So I'd say - - part of the extreme behavior is because of our actions and we need to be responsible in accepting gays into society - - by stopping the hate and judgement.

Lady, until the leather and chains leave the parades and just "normal looking" folks walk down the street, it aint gonna happen.

Your right though. Most folks I know dont have a problem with gay folks. Its more of a curiosity.

Not that gays are "crazy" but it reminds of a quote from "Golden Girls".

"here in the south, we dont hide our crazy people....we bring'em out and show'em off"

Acceptance and change is the responsibility of everyone.

Accepting that gays are a natural/normal part of humanity.
Gays accepting - extreme sexual public display - is probably not good for their image.

Those that continue to hate/judge and claim gays are an abomination of God - - - need to be spanked by someone wearing assless chaps

I find these comments insulting. Oddballs, freaks, queers, fags. All comments that have shown up in this topic and other topics I have read on Above Top Secret regarding gay men.

"We only want the normal looking gays"!!

Let's isolate the one's that don't fit our picture perfect postcard world. The one's that are a bit effeminate, shun them. The one's that act camp, run them out of town. Or maybe beat them and tie them up like Matthew Shepard, god rest his soul.

We only want the one's that can pass as straight and conform to our ideals of what a gay man should be. The one's that are dull as hell in a nice conservative suit and who live in a nice normal house with a white picket fence. We are quite accepting of those kind of gays!!

This is basically what you are saying. And as far as I am concerned, as an openly gay man, it's one of the most offensive, homophobic comments I have ever read in my life.

What happened to tolerance and a respect for people who are different.

May as well go one step further and make sure we all have blond hair and blue eyes then!! You are no better than a Nazi with those views. After all, you only want "normal looking" gays!

Those that do not listen to History are condemned to repeat it!

Soooo.

AS a blonde, blue eyed Volksdeutsch myself...do you think that my going out to show pride in my "German-ness" should include walking down the street with full on Wehrmacht banners and Waffen SS uniform?

I dont think that would make most folks "accept" the good things that the Fatherland has given the world.

If you act like a FREAK you will be treated as a FREAK.

I'm sorry your sensibilities are so fragile. Being gay doesnt mean you have to be weird. Do I totally get the "gay" thing? Nope. Seems kinda weird. Do I still like my gay friends? Yep. Would I enjoy kicking the hell out of some of those folks from Westboro if they started hollering at my friends? yep. Put us all side by side and all you would see is people. No one trying to convert the other one. Just folks being folks.

I'm sort of old fashioned though. I give my male friends (straight) hell about earrings still.
I still think that is a girl thing. I dont care if one is 6'5 and 250 and could break me in half! Its in good nature though.

BTW, I love how you immediately go for the "nazi" angle. Saul Alinsky would be proud of ya son.
