I know of a base in Melbourne that stretches out a long way underground. It would be the prime target for a nuke so there's no question about why it's there.

May I ask how you "know" there is a base under Melbourne?
What area of Melbourne is it in? I'd love to take a look around the area.
I've lived in Melbourne most of my life and I have never heard anything proving or even suggesting an actual location of a base around Melbourne.

I had friends in the past who's fathers owned large construction and electrical companies..
They told me their fathers worked on the tunnels under the Yarra and said many workers reported hearing machinery and vehicles BEHIND the walls..
The theory was the Government used the construction as a cover to build a base under there..
They had the bores and equipment to do it..
Do I believe them? Not sure but they had the opportunity..

Cool thread. It wouldn't be hard to build what you want in the outback, there's virtually no one around and mind blowing amounts of space available. Pretty sure Pine gap is a radar communications base and not much more. I did hear a rumor that there were big bases underneath Melbourne and Sydney airports or in the direct area but that hasn't been verified or anything.

Melbourne has loads of underground tunnels, not sure about bases but there are definitely connecting tunnels. I have been down a few myself and there are lots of big rusted locked up doors and you can literally walk for huge distances under the city and pop out in really weird spots.

There are heaps of unused or old tunnels throughout Sydney and Melbourne, there was actually a recent movie made that has a slight horror twist to it but it's made to look real, abit like the blaire witch project but it has sopme great footage of the Sydney tunnels that are abandoned or used by the homeless

It's not a corny horror but aat the same time i wouldnt say its great but it is one of theose eerie movies where you never know whats gonna happen. Plus it has some great footage of the tunnel systems that are no longer used.

At the very start it sez based on true events but im not 100% about that....

The is a different movie also called ''The Tunnel'' if your into underground tunnels etc then you might like it.

If you ever get a chance to talk them again, you gotta ask for some more details and also a location!!

We need to check it out

Are you talking about the Domain tunnel under the Yarra?? I remember driving thtrough there years after completion and water was still leaking down the walls... wasnt exactly water tight.

I dont know if the best place to build a bunker would be under a big river like the Yarra. Although it could be true. There was also the tunnels built for Eastlink.... that project was a massive cost blowout so maybe they incorporated some cost into extra tunnels within the tunnel area near Ringwood.

hmm i am starting to sound abit paranoid now....

Most Australians DO in fact know about them, at least those of my generation.....do I care whether these bases are here or not? Nope. Quite frankly I don't care.

You on the other hand have just discovered they do exist......that tells me you must be from Hoboville!

Most Australians know there are numerous underground military bases in Australia; that's not news to us Australians, however, you have betrayed your friend on an open public domain even though your friend is full of BS and most likely played you for the fool that you are.

"Most Australians know there are numerous underground military bases?" Then how is it that the OP's source is full of B.S.?

I think NONE of us know this as FACT. if we did...well, we'd have facts, and we could share them.

I knew someone who was doing Army reserves training, and they were making their way through the bush when they came upon a guarded fence, american flag, with American soldiers. In a not so friendly way they were asked to leave immediately. This was in the Northern Territory I think.

Yes, the Domain tunnels..
Also a huge cost blow out BTW..

Nah, I don't see those guys anymore..
Actually met them while doing my Commercial Pilots license..
Was rooming with some very wealthy boys, one was Paul Whelan of wreckers fame..

This was in Cessnok,NSW..
Some of the instructors also told us about a few trainees who were on a solo flight..
Supposedly they went off course and strayed over what looked like a holiday resort..
They say their radio came to life asking who they were and they saw the tennis court open up and it had weapons inside aimed at them..
Truly, who knows what to believe??

Cheers for the links. The Coen brothers put a 'based on a true story' at the start of Fargo to add impact so it may not be based on real events, but whatever. I've been down a couple in Sydney too, there are lots of tunnels leading off from train tunnels, big ones, I went inside a tunnel right under the city that was pretty far down, but I guess Sydney has quite a lot of train tunnels, Melbourne more drains.

There's a group in Melbourne I'm aware of that has a yearly party in one of the many huge rooms hidden deep under the city, I've seen a couple, they're amazing. I'd love to get a map of the tunnel system...

the Bridge in the back ground is at the corner of Chapel st and Alexandra Ave South Yarra ,if you stand on the bridge looking downstream(city direction) the entrance is on the left bank of the river,be careful of rain at this time of year dude, maybe wear a life jacket and a weapon if you are on your own, never know who's about,
some more good pics and drain locations here

Be carefull!!

Especially in Winter and this year we are having higher than average rainfall, and yeah i wouldnt go it alone. The tunnels are used by the homeless and drug addicts. If your gonna go in, take more than one person with you and make sure you let someone know where you are going.

Better safe than sorry, especially if your not experianced in tunnel / drain exploring.

A life jacket wont help if your inside a drain... you may float but there will be no where to go inside the drain system.
