You guys do realize that you are arguing in favor of lowering taxes on the already super rich right? Most of us here would never see a dime of that money.

Trickle down economics huh? Funny how this became a 'popular' idea right about when limitations on political contributions and the role of corporations in politics were beginning to run amuck.

Yeah, if I was rich and had access to politicians, I'd tell them that trickle down economics was a good idea too.

Trickle down economics is supremely Unamerican.

America was based on the idea that the common person would have an integral part in stimulating the economy, not the already rich. Anyone, through intelligence, hard work, and perseverance, could create a successful enterprise, and then become and integral and important part of the economic system. Almost every huge American business today was created in such a manner.

Trickle down economics, which was never popular until around 30 years ago, states the exact opposite. It argues that the common American no longer has a role in creating successful enterprises and job opportunities. Rather, this is the responsibility of the already rich, as they are the only ones with the intelligence, knowledge, know how, and opportunities to make this happen. The common person's role is only to take the jobs created by this system, thus the name: trickle down.

How this concept has now become so ferociously defended by so many Americans is beyond me.

Let the cuts expire and the money men will just use that as an excuse to fire another like 5,000,000 or so. If the cuts would've been allowed to expire as they were scheduled to last December then we would not be needing to cut anything and could've been opertaing in the black, these tax cuts have kept us solidly in the red for a few years now.

Finally, we're going to cut down the deficit! Oh...I'm sorry, we're 'raising taxes'...on who exactly? Oh, on the people who can most afford the tax increase and are least affected by the recession. That actually makes sense.

Isn't it crazy that the same people who are complaining about the deficit are the same people who are complaining about any of the logical measures used to combat it?

Also, since when is 'removing unnecessary tax cuts' the same thing as 'raising taxes'? Putting the wealthy at the same level of taxation as they were under Clinton isn't going to do much to harm them.

Well, where are the jobs that the Bush tax cuts were supposed to create?

Care to tell us?

I suppose you just LOVE propping up the wealthy people that benefit from these tax cuts.

Congratulations for allowing yourself to become essentially another pawn of the Privileged Class in America.

After obama (foolishly for himself and the progressives) extended the tax cuts last time, he set them to expire at the perfect time to make them a 2012 campaign issue. Then obama will have to try and sell or explain to voters suffering from an already lousy economy why they should agree with increasing taxes and making their lives worse and re-elect obama.

Ask Jimmy Carter how well that re-election strategy works ...

here's his strategy ... The 'Rich' are going to have to tighten their belts too
the well-to-do will have to share in the pain

see, his handlers are going for the populist role for their front man

i thought this when he reluctantly passed the 2 year tax extension for the wealthy

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but didnt the Bush tax cuts only help out the rich people anyway? If my memory is correct, it did nothing to help me out and I am as far away from "rich" as you can possibly get. I live paycheck to paycheck.

As far as I am concerned the rich can kiss my backside. When and if the SHTF...I'm robbing the rich. They are not prepared to deal with someone like me after living in their fairytale world for as long as they have.

Even if tax increases reached 99%, the rich would never feel it because the goods and services that their companies provide would pass the added expense onto us, the middle class.
So laugh! Gleefully enjoy the "gouging" that the rich will feel.
It'll only last as long as it takes to raise prices.

Now that a grown-up has explained things, you kids can go out and play now.

Yes, the rich are also mobile.
If you create an environment for them to leave try not to fall out of your chair when they do.

obama is drawing a line in the sand? he should put his head in it while he's at it! sorry, had to go there.

---------------------------------
During this time of economic crisis the president of the United States should be articulating
solutions not drawing lines in the sand.
---------------------------------
He also has other lines in the sand.
-Don't touch Planned Parenthood -
-Don't touch the National Endowment for the Arts -
-Don't touch NPR -
-Don't touch anything. That way the 1929 Crash 2.0 will arrive sooner and then our savior
George Soros will ride into Washington D.C. on his great white horse with a - solution -.

Exactly. It is a myth that these tax cuts only benefit the rich. Does any seriously believe that the middle class isn't affected by these tax cuts? I, for one, know for a fact, that middle class America is under attack. This is just one example of it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't taxes on the wealthy and corporations much higher decades ago? So why weren't goods and services set at "price gouging" levels? The middle class was much healthier then.

I'm not calling you a liar or anything like that, but this is the same kind of bogus line of reasoning that is used repeatedly by the Republicans to justify continually lower tax rates for the rich.

Again, it's been 10 years of tax cuts for the wealthy, where are the jobs? More bogus BS talk from the Republicans. It's basically a provable fact that these guys are lying at this point.

Scare tactics are used a lot by politicians to trick people into thinking things like tax cuts for the wealthy are needed or else we are all doomed. I find it extremely offensive that someone that is voted in to office abuses their position like that. But it happens all the time.

I don't understand what you're saying here. So if the rich were taxed even less, the middle class wouldn't be under attack as much? Are you aware that the rich are being taxed less now than they have in decades?

Obama has finally drawn in sand,,,,, well,,,,,,,,, good on him. Next will be paper and pencil's, But,,,,,,Only when he graduates to using a pen will I be impressed by him.
I cant wait for the day that the big guy learn's to write proper, im glad your president is finally getting edumacated.

Seriously though.
WHY has it taken Obama this long to change Bush's dumb laws and taxes? Why ?????
I think its a little to late from your so called leader of the free world to ask for changes, he should have done that at the start of his rule of oppression. Hes a day late and a dollar short in my books.
This is only a re election ploy for more vote's.
I hope you vote this dope out next election.
But then again he just may be the smartest of the dumbest to rule you in a long time.
Scary for you and scary for the world too.

The country needs Obama's tax plan, and the Republican's spending cuts. It will take both to even begin to make a dent!

We need to swallow the hard pills! ** No debt ceiling increase. ** No extension on tax cuts. **Deep, deep spending cuts. And let the chips fall where they may.

We cannot dig ourselves out of this hole, we just keep getting deeper and deeper! At this point, it is time to cut our losses, ride out the depression, and emerge victorious on the other side.

I just wanted to requote this for truthiness

Obama should have drawn this line in the sand in 10 when he said he would...its one of the reasons he got elected actually.

As far as the whole "save the rich" mentality...meh, I am over it. Frankly, when the corporatist ultra-con's are up in arms, you know it must be a good move.

Actually, if you look at the survey ATS did, you will find a disproportunate amount of fairly well off members here...basically, this site for some reason atttracts the middle age moderately wealthy white man...so, some may be grumpy for a reason...they might have to skip a few thousand dollar cigars.

I hold no bitterness towards their success however, I do hope one day I also will be complaining about a 4% tax hike that may hold me back from getting yet another golden statue for my collection in my museum room.

I think the rich will do just fine...however, if the 4% hike makes them disgusted at being rich, I will offer my services of removing their burden by accepting the difference between middle class and upper class..that way I have to deal with the horrors of the 4% increase (well, I say increase, but in reality, its just removing the initial unfunded decrease)

Let them leave...the rich do not employ people...companys and corporations do.
corporations are run by people that quite often aren't even in the country...the rich are just parasitic hoarders of wealth more often than not.
_____
This is a federal removal of a temporary tax decrease...If the rich want to avoid that, they better learn a new language. I think they will simply accept a 4% tax increase and remain in america. otherwise...I hear somolia has a good tax rate for the elite...granted, you will pay the difference in security, food tasters, and importing things like water and translators...but hey...at least its sunny.

"The rich do not employ people."
I should frame that and put it on the wall.

It would be good for a laugh every time i see it.
