They don't look like domes, they look more like craters.

The road spirals downwards, not up.

Looks like it to me anyway.

wouldn't the roads get smaller the closer they spiraled toward the center?

also the shadows don't seem right to me for a crater...

just my 2 cent

These are pretty curious looking.

I don't agree that they are water or oil storage tanks, at least the design for such doesn't make sense - compare them to any typical water storage tank, how often do you need to have a spiral ramp to the top? This ramp can only be for driving a vehicle to the raised structure atop these "domes".

I work in architecture and strictly from an engineering standpoint, it seems to be an unusually complex structure to have a spiral ramp integrated to the "dome" like that. If it was just a water tank, why would a vehicle need to drive to the top of it, as opposed to using pipelines (for moving water) or ladders (for maintenance access, etc.)?

I think the climate (harsh desert with intense sunlight) might account for some of the unique design requirements of whatever this structure is. It could be for storing water, if the pipelines are buried to keep heat/sunlight from affecting them, and it could be the strange arrangement along that grid is to eventually transform that gridded area to a new grow region. If that was the case you would expect to see similar structures in the existing row region nearby. Or at least earlier versions of whatever these are.

If people work at these locations how do they get there? The roads are cleared to a point just outside the structure and obviously from the structure which would suggest an underground complex connected to the other domes.

Ok, here's the thing, I've been reading this entire thread. A lot of people just read the title and the original post, and replied straight away without finding the one or two decent explanations in the many pages inbetween (gifford's ajban water tanks). And more than this, nearly half the people who posted their outlandish theories based on nothing but the unfamiliarity of the structures, did so without specifying their theories were just that, pure theory. "It is a missile silo" For example (I picked this because i saw it a few times) , 1. Has been proven not to be true 2. Is opinion not fact .. and 3. Makes us all here at ATS look a little bit silly. Perhaps if you are going to say something like "It is definately(insert item here)" you might want to make sure that you check that you are really really sure first? Or maybe if you do want to share a theory with us you might present it as a theory and not fact? No? You don't like that? Honestly I don't even know why I started ranting, nothing ever changes, I just wish people would be a bit more perceptive. That won't happen though.

Just in the middle of nowhere huh?

I believe its that way because the vehicles that 'park' there are not coming from the ground...

I believe that is a picture of a road starting at ground level (the ramp is cover with sand, which anyone whose ever lived near a beach can tell you the sand will accumulate at the bottom of the ramp--for obvious reasons) that spirals around the dome until it ends near the top. In my opinion that is a road going from the surface to the top of the dome, not some road going underground. I still haven't finished this thread so I don't know if everything is cleared up, but I must admit that so far this thread reads like a nice little mystery.

SF

Some of my favorite theories so far are:
bunkers
silos
oil or water containers

Someone theorized that they were doomsday bunkers for rich middle easterners. That is clearly the most incendiary and exciting idea so I like that one. Plus someone said that coordinates place the facility in the UAE. UAE is one of the more progressive, capitalistic and western stylized countries 'over there' so if anyone was gonna make some money off doomsday bunkers it'd be them. They have the world's tallest building, maybe they have the deepest too?!

Interesting concept there, can you explain to me what types of crops they may be able to successfully grow in the sands? Cactus?

I know they can grow date palms there, but I found these links too. I dunno what exact crops, but there's obviously something being grown in the northwest grids.

IMO that road does not go underground, You can barely see the street, but it is there, and you can see that road leads to an intersection which is connected in a grid to other roads.

This is the desert, so the road will have sand covering it in some areas.

I'm pretty sure the ramp just leads to the either sand-covered, or un-paved sand road that makes the grid. If you zoom out and look at the big picture, there's paved roads on the outside and certain portions of the grid area. The grid is either made by paved roads that are sand covered, or sand roads.

Abu Dhabi is famous for it's massive irrigation projects and the greening of the desert.

Given the layout, surrounding features and what is known about the Country, I would say these have somethign to do with irrigation.

That said, I'm not the first to point that out.
