I don't think that rap music contributes much to the literary field.

Most of the lyrics are pretty stupid and this passes for culture.

It's not the music that's dumbing down kids, but rather the parents that allow their kids to act stupid.

Rap music:

Not a musician in sight.
Not a vocalist to be heard.
Not a song to remember.

Rap has dumbed the music industry down.
I thought the M in MTV stood for MUSIC.

It now stands for MINDNUMBING.
Kids dont know any better, they think thats music.

Rap "music" does dumb kids down, and my little brother is the best living example. He's 15 years old, all he does is smoke weed and listen to freakin' lil wayne.

He barely makes it to school, and he has now lost all ambition to graduate and spends his time at home smoking and writing and practicing rap music. I hate it because i know he wont make it that fake @$$ money mongering society, and i ask him why he wants to throw away a great mind, knowledge and your own soul for these material things? He simply DGAF, because he's a gangsta!

PS, for the record, im not racial in any way, and some rap is okay, when it speaks about the true cruelty of the world and that certain particular artists struggle and that music can relate to me or how i believe most of the world does and wishes to create something greater for mankind, but F##K Lil Wayne especially, because everytime i here his voice on a song talking about "ima shoot ya grandma", "i kill you in the kitchen" "i own the crack house" He is so freakin' fake i cant stand it and his influence is more important to my little brother than mine, im 21, or my mothers.

Well at least the dumbing down is focused on kids and not adults..

*quietly sings I'm not afraid I'm not afraid, to take a stand....*

Honestly it's the mainstream rap that's degrading people, sadly, alot of folks listen to the mainstream.

I personally think Rap is Crap (you can't spell crap without rap), but like others have said, listen to the stuff that isn't mainstream and you will begin to slowly change your mind.

Lolz I lyke rap n rnt stoopid. maybe, it's what people give their attention to, instead of other things that make the difference, who knows though?

ALSO, I think it would be the right thing to do to unquote "Music" because Rap is Music.

I would say pop is more of a risk to our kids, I heard the kids round my way sing along to Rihanna S and M the other day.

9 year olds singing "sex in the air i dont care i like the smell of it"

Made me feel sick..

You'll notice that a few of these "artists" actually have their songs featured in Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas.
Shocking, isn't it?

RAP IS POETRY!!!
The main stream rap is not rap. They only talk about party's, sex, and expensive objects. Real rap or hip-hop is like journalism. It has a story to tell or a message to spread to teach a grater lesson. Hip-Hop is not all about gangs, if you think that then the industry has done their job well in brain washing you. But gangster rap is a HUGE part of hip-hop to spread a message (journalism) so other people will see what the media wont report. But most of all real hip-hop (rap) i just like any other genera of music,Emotion manifest Thought,Thought manifest Words Actions and Reality. You really have to listen when you hear a real poet, when you hear industry crap, their is no thought, you just bob your head to the music. I will give you 2 examples, one of a big named industry artist, and the other the best underground MC that has ever lived.

Lil Wayne industry rap

The best rapper to ever walk the earth

Hi, I'd just like to say that music dumbing us down isn't exclusive to rap, but the music "industry" just listen to words in hit list song talking about sex, cars and money instead of love fraternity and better living for the people. There are, however, what I call modern day heroes. Tupac Shakur was one, he didn't do what the industry wanted so he was sent to jail for alleged rape. When he came out he was bigger than ever, signing about how the illuminati are real and control us, that the governement dosen't care about us. Ironic that he had a hard time making money and a place to live given his general popularity. He also talks about those "other" rappers that are on a leash. I strongly encourage everyone to go on youtube.com and listen to what this guy said in his interviews and in front of cameras. Also, listen to his lyrics.. I was never a fan of rap... as a matter of fact I hated it. This guy showed me that I shouldn't generalize. Note that he must've been hitting the right buttons cause he was assassinated at the age of 25. This guy worked very hard to get his message out there and he wanted to change the world. It seems he was in advance of his time because the things he talked about are all over conspiracy sites today but no one seems to remember what he had to say..... he was a diamond in the ruff (or however you spell that) And we should look for other artists that the media won't let go, and start listening to their words, they are messengers..... just watch out for industry artists trying to brainwash you into a life of richness and shallowness.

thx for the post, I'm looking forward to everyone's reactions. also you can email me if you wish to talk further

i cant understand why rap is even classified as music. just loop a 5 second section of music and talk over it about things you most likely never even did considering you are still free.

if you dont think rap is dumbing kids down, it has probably already had an effect on you.

lets go down the list:

gaudy jewelry
glorifying criminal lifestyles
promoting corporate interests
overtly violent (just as violent as some extreme metal genres)
objectifying women
horrendous use of the english language
hatred toward other races, expecially white people (and even fellow rappers because of colors/area/affiliation)
autotune, autotune, autotune (i mean people dont even have to know how to sing anymore!)

I would say that if anything is dumbing people down it is the absolutely ridiculous proliferation of "reality" programming on tv.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT???????? They grow up to become adults?!

Who knew!

This is the same ole song and dance people have been doing for decades.

First it was rock and roll.. people were convinced that because of Elvis, "kids" would loose their ever loving minds..

Then came the 60's and Hippies would ruin society as know it.

Then the 70's and well.. We can't blame it all on Southern Rock

Hello 80's New Wave, Hair Bands and Alt Music.. I'm still alive and kicking and somehow managed to be smart enough to type on a computer and form thoughts.. SHOCKING!

90's.. Flannel NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! nuf said.

So to quote the Whispers.. "the beat goes on"

Each generation has something that "will dumb the kids down".

sarcasm is the lowest form of wit FYI, and isnt needed. elvis & southern rock dont glorify ridiculous lifestlyes and preach ignorance either.

and to the previous poster talking about closet racism.. since when is it racist to have an opinion, albeit a negative one?

its the racists who cry racism first.

That was worthless, The only rap most you ever hear is what on television and most radio station, most of that rap is actually influenced by and promoted by non-rappers, and usually they are non-black... but that is a more sensitive subject that most of you would consider false info anyway.... But you would be suprised who pushes the most bullsh!t on mainstream radio, the same people that pushed the bullsh!t drugs into urban neighbor hoods.
Stop the stupidity please
