First off I know some people just like to dance and the beats are catchy and extremely simple. How can some rich white suburban kid put on a dew rag, talk about strife and totally lose his or her ability to speak properly? Is there a conspiracy here?If so who are the conspirators?

Rap isn't to blame nor is Hiphop, during the 70s-early 90s, rap and hiphop were extremely influential

take these lyrics for example. www.mp3lyrics.org... he's rapping about exactly what your thread is about haha.

give them a read through, or check out the song itself, thats just 1 of 1000s rappers that I could name, that have meaning in their songs.

Ever heard of Immortal Technique? if not your missing out.

Jedi Mind Tricks anybody??

In my opinion, I believe some of these artists started to get a little too truthful, and someone deemed it necessary to make idiots like lil wayne, guicci(however it's spelt), etc famous to keep the good stuff buried.]

Rap music is doing worse than that.

Not only is it dumbing kids down, but it is making it ok to treat women like crap, to shoot people, to drop out of school and to disrespect everyone in general.

And it is supporting racism.

MAINSTREAM rap is. the good stuff is and always will be underground, if you want to hear good hiphop you have to put your ear to the ground and listen

OH HELL YES you know it is!
I agree in the early days when it was stemming from its jazz roots it had positive influences
Now its just part of the MSM

its just as dumb as britney spears / justin beiber and all the other trash

My Dad and I always refer to it as "RAP (WITH A SILENT C")

Yeah some like exhibit krs1 and others are alright. How come they don't play that on the radio? If you try to tell me mainstream rap is good today I will have to laugh.I can come up w way better lyrics than any radio rapper you can think of,especially lil wayne. When a wrapper can form a whole thought or sentence then I might check it out again.Until then I guess i'm an Ignant Hayter.

I would never claim mainstream rap is good, that would be silly, and the people you named are great, but people like Del The Funky Homosapien and Jedi mind tricks, you can actually learn from their songs, it's not about the image or the material goods, it's about addressing current world affiars and getting the truth to people who need to hear it the most.

tried to embed that pharoah monch clap song, that guy speaks some interllectual stuff aswell as people like mos def talib kweli etc... and these guys are world famous rappers who arent exactly underground but just havent sold out unlike the hip pop stars like lil wayne and jay z.

Todays main stream rap definately is, just like alot of other music you will hear or other entertainment for that matter but I there is definately rap music that will make you think and put on your philosophical hat because you can not class a complete genre to be negative because it never is.

Being a big fan of the genre I now understand how certain rapper make me feel inside once I start observing my emotions while listening. For example, if I listen to some utter gangsta sh&t which I do enjoy from time to time, you get some kind of andrenaline pumping in you where you are ready to start a fight or even deeper where it puts your mind set to want more money, nice cars and act like a gangster.

But listening to rappers like mos-def for example, or tribe called quest you get a complete different mind set and calmness or deep thought that you do not get from gangster rapper oriented artists.

I think music can influence people in alot of ways and it depends what you like but you can't put a whole genre and say it dumbs people down because I would not agree to this.

There are rappers that rap about, love, money, crime, gangster story telling, respect, equality, hardship in their own life, women, fast cars, philosophy, god, relationships, self reflection, happyness, meditation, wisdom, knowledge and the list goes on, at the end of the day you choose who you wish to listen to and if you think music is just noise you are dead wrong. Just be careful who you listen to and it will not dumb you down unless you choose it do so as you are the one that accept it.

sorry for double post.

How come they don't play that on the radio?

Quite simply underground rappers are all independent and either own their own labels or are not on a label at all, because they dont want the fame they just want to make good music that anyone can take a lesson out of.

Like Eyedea, he was ahead of his time, and his music WILL make you think, please listen to this song while reading the lyrics here and tell me that rap is to blame for all the idiots walking around sagging their pants. Because it's not, it's the greedy bastards that would wither pay out the ass to sponsor people like lil wayne, because his music is simple, catchy, and doesn't make people think.

I'm sorry for spamming your thread with videos, I just thought I would use some as references.

Not to forget, once you are signed to a major record label you will loose all your creative rights untill you have paid your debt. Since labels are all about money you become a musical factory pumping out crap and unless you are super talented, there is no way of you producing tens of albums in a financial year that are on the same ranking as those that take time to grow. Not to mention, rappers change once they have money.

Just look at snoop dogg, the man is gangster, fair enough but his lyrical flow once was incredible, now he has cash, stays in the game and come up with some wack stuff, just look at his new track called WET and you will know what I mean. The man has lost it and he is just among some of the other greats that have fallen because they can not handle the fame and the cash.

Not to mention, no body on MTV wants to hear meaningful lyrics, its got to be flashy.

EarthwormJim (you got the name from the old computer game ?? I loved it back in the days)

You are on to something.

I was into Rap and HipHop since the early days, in the beginning it was fresh, and funky.
And had some message as well.

It came straight from the hood, had social issues in the lyrics, like in the old Singer/songwriter tradition.
Somehow it changed dramatically over the years.

So i turned off it a bit. Later on i was lacking energy in my life and turned back to working out, and there i d loved to listen to some of the testosterone-loaded Gangster rap. I knew the lyric sucked, but it gave me lots of energy.

Until i realised it makes me very aggressive and immoral.
Somehow i diiscovered classical music and listening to it you realize it's a completely different league; some of the pieces of Bach for instance seem to come straight from... let's call it "our source", whatever believe system you want to add.

As well i studied some subliminal messages going on in the music biz. And realized there are lot of players who are deeply involved in some strange Illuminati/Masonic/NWO/PTB (called it whatever you want) agendas, such as Jay-Z and his entourage.

Others are just plain dim, such as 50c. And some which used to be good, just completely lost it (Em for example)
The ones "on the good side" have been silenced (2pac for example)

There are still some good ones out there, but they are getting rare (Immortal technique) for instance.

Is it a conspiracy ? I guess so. Most of the big names in the game (the ones played on MTV) are heavily involved in (former?) drug trafficking and turned to Bizness Executives (Jay-z calls himself the "CEO of hiphop" !)
So they turned into what rap and hiphop was clearly against when it started as the music from the man on the street.

Why are the murders of Biggie an 2pac still not known ? Coz they cover it up, like 9/11, JFK, etc.

Why aren't the big players arrested when its known they are into shady buisness ? Because they do the same job as the Cocaine Import Agency, hired by them
Why the are doing music? Well TPTB need some propaganda, and you do not reach the kids through political statements, but through Poop-Music.
And all of them big players are filthy rich, despite the claim of the music industry that they are not selling records anymore since the kids are downloading tracks for free.

Peace

Oh and may I promote one more thing (not mine) but if you are into some of the unknowns, I suggest you visit www.hiphopphilosophy.com which is an internet only radio station. The only radio station that is crazy enough to stay "F&*ck the radio".

This right here, spoken truth. It certainly does seem like hiphop was dumbed down for the masses, I believe it's to hinder anyone from looking further into what the genre has to offer, because if someone were to do that, they would come across many underground artists that speak out against the so called Powers That Be, instead someone hear's wakka fakka flame, and either likes it and continues to listen to it, or deems it retarded and moves on (thus losing a chance to find some hidden gems).

hey - every " new " genre / approach in music has been attacked , from mozart onwards

in the 20s / 30s people claimed that blues music was a cortrupting influence

and that flappers spelt the end of western civilisation

in the 40s , jive , jitterbug and zoot suits were the " new " evil

cannot recall off hand what the curse of the 50s was

but the 60s had ` beetle mania ` denounced , also hendrix

70s first metal then punk was the new bogie man

and it goes on
